BREWING, FILTERING & SUPPLYING SPECIALITY COFFEE Harbour Head, Porthleven, Cornwall Having QER “To be asked to do the Food Festival is a massive honour for us.” a ball Kelvin Batt, Festival Sponsor This year the team behind Porthleven’s Masked Ball will be running the bars, décor and production at the Food & Music Festival. As well as a wealth of event experience, Kelvin Batt and Alec Short bring a fresh injection of enthusiasm and ideas — and a black book full of contacts from the music world and beyond. We spoke to local lad Kelvin about what new delights they’ll be contributing to this year’s Festival.

First of all, tell us about the Masked Ball. We’re now in our eighth year and in that time we’ve grown from an event for 400 to one for 4000. It takes place on the cliffs near Beacon Crag just outside Porthleven on the first weekend in May and it’s always a sell out. If I was to say 15 years ago to people we’d have Groove Armada playing on the cliffs they’d have looked at me like I was crazy but now we’ve done that. It’s one of a kind really because we’ve no big sponsors or companies up there, it happens because of the hard graft of a group of local people, much like the Food Festival. What a great two weeks for Porthleven! What will the Masked Ball team bring to the Food & Music Festival? To be asked to do the Food Festival is a massive honour for us. We hope we can add to what’s already a great Festival and help take it to the next level. If you look at the line-up there’s already great bands and the food side has a real superstar line-up, we want to bring our contacts in and to bring in some top international acts to complement the brilliant local talent. Hayseed Dixie, who we’ve booked for Friday night, have played sold out shows across the UK and US so it’s a massive coup for us to have them here in Porthleven. Being able to book that kind of act depends on the contacts we have from doing the Masked Ball. What else can we expect to see that’s different at this year’s Food & Music Festival? We’ve got some big ideas we’re hoping to bring to fruition. The first is we’d like to incorporate the Lime Kiln itself into the stage over there, whether that’s using the bottom section as a bar or using it as a better backdrop or even putting the bands on top of it. We’ve got School involved making a huge mermaid that we’ll float on a pontoon out in the harbour and we’ll be bringing in lots of décor, from flags to bunting to fit with the 2015 Feast and Fiesta theme. The kids’ area, Jollyboat, will have a pirate theme and that’ll include a dome with a tunnel to get inside where you’ll find a giant mirrorball skull as well as a few surprises! We’re also looking at bridging the gap across the harbour to help the flow and stop the bottleneck you can get over on Breageside. It’ll make it easier to walk around and we’ll have a troll taking tolls to cross with some of the money going towards the fishermen’s charity — so everyone will benefit. We’re so stoked to be involved and we’re going to push the boat out! See the back page for more details on the 2015 Masked Ball. THANK YOU Huge thanks from the committee to all our sponsors and supporters. From money to skills to feeding our volunteers, we couldn’t do it without you. 15 16 Chip off the old block Chef Jack Stein will be cooking in our Chefs’ Theatre on Saturday. We caught up with him beforehand to get the lowdown on the Stein’s new Porthleven restaurant, past Festival appearances — and cooking with his Dad. What's great about Porthleven? As this festival Jack Stein (right) with Dad, Rick at their new Porthleven demonstrates, Porthleven has a vibrant food and drink community and restaurant, opened in November 2014. is fast becoming the food capital of the south coast of Cornwall. Not a bad right hand reef break either. Tell us about the new Stein's restaurant here? Our Porthleven restaurant offers a selection of some of our best offerings from our Padstow restaurants and also a chance to taste and share some of Rick’s newest recipes from his adventures from Venice to Istanbul. We were attracted to this spot by one pure and simple thing – the view of the harbour. Have you been to the food festival before and what are you excited about? Yes, in 2011, I cooked a spring ragout of turbot – I was overwhelmed by how busy the event was and how wonderful the local fishermen were who supplied the fish to the festival. I’m excited to demo with Dad – I haven’t done that for about five years so I’d like to see how far he has come in that time… Can you reveal what you'll be cooking at the festival? It’s likely to be something from Rick’s new book From Venice to Istanbul, but we've still to make the final call. Have the two of you cooked together on stage before? We cooked together at the BBC Good Food Show a few years ago and most recently we cooked Christmas dinner together for the family. You can expect Rick to be leading and me reminding him when he forgets — we once cooked Malaccan black pepper crab and I had to remind him about the black pepper! Catch Jack and Rick Stein in our Chef’s Theatre at 4pm on Saturday. Rick will be signing copies of his new book at their restaurant between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

Porthleven’s latest celebrity fan. Alex Polizzi is a hotelier and TV presenter who lives with her young family in London, where she set up Millers Bakery with her husband 16 years ago. She has had many happy holidays in Cornwall but only recently discovered Porthleven after filming a new series here. It was love at first sight… Do you visit Cornwall often? I don’t visit Cornwall quite as much as I used to - mainly because of the demands of having small kids, but I’ve got a little tiny place in Cornwall myself. I like going down to in particular, where I’ve spent many a happy holiday. I’ve got lots of favourite spots and I particularly like eating there. I love the Gurnard’s Head - many a delicious meal has been had there. I love the art deco swimming pool in Penzance and I am very fond of the maritime museum in Falmouth, as well as so many of the coastal walks that I’ve done, which have given me lots of pleasure over the years. I can’t wait to introduce them to my children. What did you think of Porthleven? I fell madly in love with it, quite possibly because it reminds me in so many significant ways of St Mawes. I like the community feeling and I’m fascinated by the fact that there is such a concentration of fantastic eating-places. The locals are incredibly friendly; I’ve had more fun evenings in Porthleven than I’ve had in London over the last year! Tell us about your new TV show. Why should people tune in? I think the programme is interesting for anyone who is interested in food and/or business. For me it’s fun because I get to combine these two passions of mine. Although I’m usually introduced as having worked in the hotel industry all my life, I specifically worked on the food and beverages side. I was responsible for many years for opening up new restaurants, setting menus, forecasting and budgets – and inevitably, there was a lot of firing and hiring that went along with that. It was so lovely to get back to something I did with so much pleasure for 15 years! 18 A real taste of Cornwall Gavin Roberts is MD of the Kernow Sausage Company who’ve had a stall serving delicious sausages at our Festival every year since it began. We caught up with him to find out what’s new for the company — and why they keep coming back for more.

Tell us about the Kernow Sausage company – how long have you been going and why did you start up? I started the company by accident about eight or nine years ago over a kitchen table. I agreed to cater for a little landlord’s barbeque that ended up not being a small family occasion but over 250 people! From there the vibrancy of Cornwall’s farmer’s markets and the local food and drink festival scene helped establish the brand. Slowly but surely we then started to work with pubs and restaurants and the odd independent shop and before you know it here we are nine year’s later and we’ve just acquired another business and expanded our reach across Cornwall and into Devon.

What makes your sausages so great? The strapline says it all – Made with love, eaten with passion. The moment you start not loving what you do any more it all goes wrong. But I can tell you honestly that I eat as many sausages now as I did when we first started up!

What’s special about Porthleven Food Festival? One of the things I like most about it is that it’s completely independent and there’s a really strong community vibe, which is absolutely lovely. It has a little something extra that you can’t quite put your finger on — an atmosphere and an essence to it that a lot of places try to get but never quite manage. It’s really well run by the team of volunteers and a fun day for everyone. We hear you’ll be incorporating our Feast and Fiesta theme into your stall this year? Can you reveal any more? We’ll be looking at the theming of the stall as well as the food offer and our recipes, but more than that you’ll just have to come and see us to find out! You’ll find the Two Brother’s Butchery in the Main Marquee and the Kernow Sausage Company around the Harbourside.

20 Last man standing Meet Richard Smith, one of the many skilled and dedicated volunteers who organise and run the Festival. His day job as a police sergeant makes him perfect for his role as Chief Steward, with responsibility for preparing traffic management, safety and fire risk plans and for managing the team of stewards who work during the Festival. Richard also looks after the clean up that follows the weekend, making him, quite literally, the last man standing. What does your role involve? In the early stages of planning my role is almost non-existent other than that I agree to do it… but then you get to February and it picks up momentum. On the weekend itself we’ll start setting up from Wednesday and then on the three days of the festival I’ll be down at the harbour from 6am until late. Do you get to enjoy it at all? Oh yes! The running around and organising is a certain amount of fun and in the evenings, I have to be there to oversee fire and safety, but I do get the chance to enjoy it. The committee is a lovely group of people too, which makes it fun. What’s the role of the stewarding team? We make sure everyone’s safe and in the right place at the right time and answer questions. We also deal with contingencies: last year we had to close premises and stalls and move a music stage indoors because of the high seas and winds. Do you plan based on the weather? Absolutely. This year there’s a low tide for midday Saturday so the sea shouldn’t be an issue this time. We’ll look at the weather forecast nearer the time and plan accordingly. Who stewards at the Festival? They come from different walks of life with many who aren’t connected to Porthleven (those who are tend to want to partake!) There’s a small core from the community but also volunteers from Falmouth University, some studying event management. We’re also speaking to Job Centre Plus about involving people who are looking to get back into work help out this year. Give Richard a pat on the back if you see him over the weekend!
