Travel & Accommodation Information the Conference Venue Travel & Accommodation Information The conference venue is 43 Woodland Road, Bristol, BS8 1UU (no.23 on the precinct map). Full precinct map and key: www.bristol.ac.uk/maps/precinct/ or www.bristol.ac.uk/maps/google/ Travel By Train Bristol has two mainline railway stations. Visitors should travel to BRISTOL TEMPLE MEADS, which is about 2 miles from the University and much closer than Bristol Parkway. From Temple Meads: The 8 and 9 bus services run about every 10mins and stop on or near the University precinct. The journey is about 20mins. The current flat-fare single is £1.65. - Check www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/ for further information on buses in Bristol. To walk to the University takes around 30-40mins and includes some steep uphill sections. - Use www.maps.google.co.uk or www.walkit.com for walking directions. Taxis from Temple Meads to the University cost between around £10 and take about 10-15mins. By Coach Coaches from a range of UK cities arrive and depart from Bristol Bus and Coach Station on Marlborough Street in the centre of Bristol, about 15-20mins walk from the University precinct, including some steep uphill sections. - Use www.maps.google.co.uk or www.walkit.com for walking directions. Taxis from the coach station to the University cost around £5 and take about 5mins. By Car Bristol can be easily accessed from both the M5 or M4 (via the M32) motorways. - Use www.maps.google.co.uk for driving directions from the M5 or M32. There is no parking available on the University precinct other that a small amount of on-street parking which charges and is limited to a 2hr stay. The closest long-stay car parks are Trenchard Street, on Park Row(BS1 5AN), and West End, on Berkley Place (BS8 1EH). Both are approximately 5-10mins walk from the University and charge as follows: 1hr - £1.00; 2hr - £2.00; 3hr - £3.00; 4hr - £5.00; 12hr - £10.00. - Further information on car parks can be found at: http://www.bristol.gov.uk/item/wrap/Transport/CarParkComponent/ (Parking near the conference venue is available to delegates with access requirements) By Plane Bristol Airport is 13 km south of the city and has scheduled flights to many UK and European cities. To get to the University from the airport: - The Bristol Flyer bus - flyer.bristolairport.co.uk – calls at Bristol coach station (see directions above) and/or Queen’s road, approximately 5mins from the university precinct. - Checker Cars - www.checkercars.com/Bristol%20Airport%20Taxi.html - offer taxis from Bristol Airport. The journey should take around 30 minutes.     APPENDIX C(1) Summary of comments - Lets talk about Supported Transport Aim of the consultation The consultation sought to engage a range of stakeholders in a debate about the savings the council needs to make with its spending on supported transport services and the opportunities to reconfigure these services following a tendering process and a reflection on some of the recent changes e.g. concessionary bus passes for older people. The consultation ran from 1 March 2011 and closed on 11 May – a period of just over 9 weeks. How was the consultation conducted The council used multiple channels to get the message out that it was seeking to engage people on these issues. The channels used were: • Press release • Leaflets on all buses, community transport vehicles, in doctors surgeries and newsagents • Posters at Park & Ride sites • A listing on the council’s Consultation Finder which details all the council’s consultation in one place on the internet: www.bristol.gov.uk/consultationfinder • Twitter • Facebook • Informed existing operators of supported transport services • Emails to equalities fora / letter to Bristol Older People’s Forum • Posters and information packs to all the council’s libraries In order to have an informed public debate about these issues, the ASK Bristol discussion site was used which gave an overview of the challenge and opportunities facing the council with these services. The site also allowed people to access detailed passenger, expenditure and subsidy information to help participants make an informed contribution to the debate.     2020 Book News Welcome to our 2020 Book News. It’s hard to believe another year has gone by already and what a challenging year it’s been on many fronts. We finally got the Hallmark book launched at Showbus. The Red & White volume is now out on final proof and we hope to have copies available in time for Santa to drop under your tree this Christmas. Sorry this has taken so long but there have been many hurdles to overcome and it’s been a much bigger project than we had anticipated. Several other long term projects that have been stuck behind Red & White are now close to release and you’ll see details of these on the next couple of pages. The Walk for Life challenge saw me trekking across Greater Manchester to 11 cricket grounds, covering over 160 miles in all weathers, and has so far raised almost £6,000 for the Christie.
