It must not be reproduced or passed to a third party without written permission of the copyright holders 2 FLAX BOURTON Occupying the centre of a fertile valley, which extends from the river Avon at Bristol on the East to the Bristol Channel between Clevedon and Weston-Super-Mare on the West, and bounded on the North and South by picturesque well-wooded ranges of mountain limestone resting upon red sandstone, the Parish of Flax Bourton, notwithstanding its insignificance in size and importance, as compared with its adjoining neighbours, is rich in natural advantages. I note with approval the colour of its soil, and recal the satisfactory testimony to its value of no less an authority than Dr. Buckland, who, speaking to our Society in 1849, assured his audience that “let the soil be red and the soil will never be bad; let gentlemen buy their estates, and not sell them, upon the red soil.”1 The area of the Parish, comprising only 590 acres,2 includes the beautiful limestone gorge known as Bourton Combe, with its grey precipices on either side, indigenous yew and elder trees growing out of the crannies of the stone, while from the summit is an extensive prospect, the city of Bristol, with the ranges of Dundry and Lansdown, the Bristol Channel, and the mountains of Wales, the slopes of Clevedon and Ashton, and the hanging woods of nearer Tyntesfield. -

APPENDIX C(1) Summary of comments - Lets talk about Supported Transport Aim of the consultation The consultation sought to engage a range of stakeholders in a debate about the savings the council needs to make with its spending on supported transport services and the opportunities to reconfigure these services following a tendering process and a reflection on some of the recent changes e.g. concessionary bus passes for older people. The consultation ran from 1 March 2011 and closed on 11 May – a period of just over 9 weeks. How was the consultation conducted The council used multiple channels to get the message out that it was seeking to engage people on these issues. The channels used were: • Press release • Leaflets on all buses, community transport vehicles, in doctors surgeries and newsagents • Posters at Park & Ride sites • A listing on the council’s Consultation Finder which details all the council’s consultation in one place on the internet: www.bristol.gov.uk/consultationfinder • Twitter • Facebook • Informed existing operators of supported transport services • Emails to equalities fora / letter to Bristol Older People’s Forum • Posters and information packs to all the council’s libraries In order to have an informed public debate about these issues, the ASK Bristol discussion site was used which gave an overview of the challenge and opportunities facing the council with these services. The site also allowed people to access detailed passenger, expenditure and subsidy information to help participants make an informed contribution to the debate. This sets the strategy for Network Rail going forwards for the next 30 years. Cycling offers a great opportunity to discover new places and views in South Gloucestershire.We hope that you enjoy cycling these routes and that it encourages you to get your bike out more often. The routes vary in length and difficulty. A grading system has been used to determine the ability level required to cycle these routes. However this is only a guide. Ability Levels 1 For all users including inexperienced or beginner cyclists. Any hills will be very gentle and any on road cycling will be on quiet roads. 2 For slightly more experienced cyclists or those who may feel a bit more confident. There may be the occasional steep hill (don’t be afraid to get off and push!) and occasional short stretches on busier roads. 3 For the reasonably competent cyclists. The rides will be longer, with some steep hills and with cycling on or alongside busy roads for longer stretches. The distances given do not take into account any return journey unless the route is circular. The times given to cycle a route may vary depending on fitness level and the number of breaks and stops. Advice These routes incorporate off road sections that are shared with pedestrians. -
