It can be awarded to all ranks and may be awarded posthumously. While not designed specifically as a bravery award, the first awards of this medal reflect a high degree of diplomacy and bravery. The medal is a Greek cross of silver, ends splayed and convexed, ensigned with the Royal Crown. The Cross is 1-½ inches across and between the arms of the Cross is laurel wreath. In the centre of the cross is a maple leaf within a circle. The ribbon is 1 ½ inches wide, bright blue with two white stripes ¼ inches wide positioned 1/8 inch from each edge. A plain silver bar with a maple leaf in the centre can be awarded for a subsequent action deserving of this medal. The recipient may use the post nominal letters MSC. On 6 June 1991, a Civil division was added to the MSC (Military). The Civil Cross is identical to the Military Cross but the ribbon has a 1cm central white stripe added. The Civil Cross is awarded to any person (Canadian or non-Canadian) for the performance of a deed or activity in an outstandingly professional manner or of an uncommonly high standard that brings considerable benefit or great honour to Canada. The MSC is worn after the Star of Courage. MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL (MSM) The Meritorious Service Medal was instituted in 1991 with a military and civil division. The military MSM is awarded for the performance of a military deed or a military activity in a highly professional manner of a very high standard that it brings benefit to, or honour to the Canadian Forces. It can be awarded to all ranks and may be awarded posthumously. The civil MSM is awarded for the performance of a deed or activity in a highly professional manner of a very high standard that brings benefit or honour to Canada. The Medal is a silver medal, circular in shape and ensigned with the Royal Crown. On the obverse is the design of the cross. On the reverse is the Royal Cypher and within a double circle the works “MERITORIOUS SERVICE MERITOIRE”. A plain silver bar with a maple leaf in the centre is awarded for subsequent awards of the medal. The Ribbon (military) is bright blue with two 6mm wide white stripes, having a blue stripe 1mm wide in its centre, centered on the outer third of each side of the ribbon. The civil MSM ribbon has a 1mm central white stripe but otherwise is similar to the military MSM ribbon.     L'obsession De La Laideur Dans Le Roman Québécois

    L’OBSESSION DE LA LAIDEUR DANS LE ROMAN QUÉBÉCOIS par Myriam Vien Département de langue et littératures françaises Université McGill (Montréal) Thèse soumise à Université McGill en vue de l’obtention du grade de Ph. D. en langue et littératures françaises Mai 2019 © Myriam Vien, 2019 RÉSUMÉ Cette thèse de doctorat explore les manifestations de la laideur dans le roman québécois, sur une période qui s’étend d’Angéline de Montbrun (1882) jusqu’au Ciel de Bay City (2008). La sélection des œuvres romanesques qui composent notre corpus, retenues pour leur importance dans l’histoire littéraire, pose la laideur comme part essentielle de l’identité même du roman québécois. Notre enquête suggère que la laideur, étudiée à travers les thèmes qu’elle recouvre mais aussi dans les formes narratives singulières qu’elle exacerbe, contribue à définir les œuvres d’ici, à les singulariser dans leur caractère exubérant, débraillé, indocile. L’examen des textes fait voir que la présence du laideron, de la langue torturée, de la ville monstrueuse, impose à travers le motif commun de la laideur une réelle continuité dans l’imaginaire. Ainsi nous postulons que la laideur, qui revient comme une obsession dans des œuvres majeures d’esthétiques et d’époques variées, permet de donner forme concrète à une honte qui ne cesse de surgir sous la plume des écrivains d’ici. Cette hypothèse détermine une méthode d’analyse à la croisée de la poétique du roman et de l’histoire littéraire, qui soulève aussi la question du réalisme romanesque en contexte québécois. La laideur se fait l’instrument d’une représentation plus authentique du réel, d’un monde à dénoncer dans ses travers, d’une écriture à déprendre aussi de sa gêne linguistique.

    CANADIAN MARITIMES 2016 19 June - 17 August 2016 SMART Canadian Maritimes Caravan 2016 19 June - 17 August 2016 Wagon Masters: Carl and Gwen Hopper Assistant Wagon Masters: Mark and Linda Avey The 2016 Canadian Maritimes Caravan started and ended in Hermon, Maine, and covered over 3,000 miles in the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. We started the trip with 19 rigs but unfortunately lost one in Monc- ton, New Brunswick ,due to an accident. No one was seriously injured, but we had to continue on with only 18 rigs. Some of the highlights of this trip included the Bay of Fundy with 25-foot tides, the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, rides on the Bluenose II and Amoeba sailing vessels, whale watching tours, and some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery in the world. Some of our group even took a day trip to Labrador, while others sailed out of St. Anthony, Newfoundland, to view icebergs and whales. We enjoyed many caravan-sponsored dinners with lots of lobster and other seafood. This was an amazing trip which was made even more enjoyable by the outstanding people who traveled with us. Many thanks to all who contributed time and effort to make this a truly memorable trip. Introduction t 22:31 on 2 September 1998, Swissair Flight 111 from New York JFK to AGeneva crashed into the sea, five miles from the shores of St. Margaret’s Bay – near Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, within the territorial waters of Canada. The cause of the crash was an electrical fire. The plane carried 229 passengers and crew from 16 countries, all of which were fatalities, as well as precious cargo. Rescue and recovery operations were started immediately during the night by local fishermen followed by the Canadian Coast Guard and the Navy. Over a period of two years more than two millions pieces of wreckage and body parts were recovered – brought to a Hangar at Shearwater for sorting, storage and processing. Lastly, a giant ship the Queen of the Netherlands was chartered to suck up a part of the ocean floor. Recovery tanks were used to sort out the silt. Aside from passengers and crew, Swissair flight 111 – which was dubbed “The UN Shuttle” – carried cargo including artworks, gold, diamonds and jewellery. Several years later the insurers applied for a treasure trove license because of missing valuables (diamonds). This operation came to the attention of the media and of the families. The treasure trove license was denied at that time by the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia1. 2.
