Pablo Neruda - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Pablo Neruda - poems - Publication Date: 2011 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Pablo Neruda(12 July 1904 – 23 September 1973) Pablo Neruda was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean poet and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. He chose his pen name after Czech poet Jan Neruda. Neruda wrote in a variety of styles such as erotically charged love poems as in his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." Neruda always wrote in green ink as it was his personal color of hope. On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. During his lifetime, Neruda occupied many diplomatic positions and served a stint as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party. When Conservative Chilean President González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months in a house basement in the Chilean port of Valparaíso. Later, Neruda escaped into exile through a mountain pass near Maihue Lake into Argentina. Years later, Neruda was a close collaborator to socialist President Salvador Allende. When Neruda returned to Chile after his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Allende invited him to read at the Estadio Nacional before 70,000 people. -

The short novel tells the story of Cannister Barnes, a young man who goes to England in the late summer for study and briefly catches a glimpse of a young woman while he’s lost in the winding streets and paths of Eton. His trip is also marred by a dreadful experience in the London Underground, in which he sees an indigent man in a wheelchair roll himself into the path of an oncoming train. -

Lineage Curated by Julia Bullock Soundbox
LINEAGE CURATED BY JULIA BULLOCK SOUNDBOX 1 julia bullock on lineage “I’ve found that musicians often share a lot about the various influences in their lives— whether they be historical, political, philosophical, personal, or based on other mediums of art. They let diverse influences not only impact their work, but find ways to let them register explicitly. It’s like musicians are hyper conscious of their lineage—they honor it and value it. So, as I continue to follow along the path and legacy of artists that came before me, lineage has become increasingly important—it’s a part of knowing from where I originated and letting that inform where I envision myself going. The musicians on this SoundBox program could not make music all together in one place, or even at one time, but the very nature of this program—which links material that spans across almost 900 years—captures an audio and visual snapshot of how lineage can inform, influence, impact, and express itself in a musical context.” 2 Esa-Pekka Salonen SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY MUSIC DIRECTOR San Francisco Symphony Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen has, through his many high-profile conducting roles and work as a leading composer, shaped a unique vision for the present and future of the contemporary symphony orchestra. Salonen is currently the Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor for London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and is Artist in Association at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. He is a member of the faculty of the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he developed and directs the pre-professional Negaunee Conducting Program. -
Investigating the Chronological Variation of Popular Song Lyrics Through Lexical Indices
Investigating the Chronological Variation of Popular Song Lyrics Through Lexical Indices Investigating the Chronological Variation of Popular Song Lyrics Through Lexical Indices Yuichiro Kobayashi1, Misaki Amagasa**, and Takafumi Suzuki** Abstract Popular songs can be regarded as a fine representation of modern society and culture. In particular, the lyrics of popular songs are the most important aspect for understanding the sense of values and linguistic sensitivity in a given generation and community. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the chronological variation of popular Japanese songs using stylometric techniques. This study draws on the lyrics of 858 songs, which appeared on the Oricon annual top 20 single hit chart between 1976 and 2015. The linguistic features investigated in this study include five different types of lexical indices, namely (a) number of words, (b) parts-of-speech, (c) word types, (d) character types, and (e) vocabulary level. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to explore the chronological change in the frequencies of lexical indices. The results showed that the frequencies of word types and character types dramatically changed before and after 1990. Moreover, the usages of auxiliary verbs as well as lower level vocabulary became more prominent, whereas the frequencies of adjectival nouns and conjunctions decreased. The findings suggest that a turning point in cultural trends corresponds with the historically significant political and economic events, such as the end of the Showa era and the burst of the bubble economy. 1. Introduction Popular songs provide a special kind of window into modern society and culture. In the United States, a number of people listen to top-ranked songs on the Billboard chart, and many songwriters make an effort to compose songs that can reach not just domestic listeners but also overseas fans. -

Apple Label Discography
Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”. From Early 1970 to late 1974, at the bottom of the label is “MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS” From late 1974 through 1975, there was a notation under the “MFD. -

CONTENTS TITLE PAGE DEDICATION THE ROAD ALSO BY CORMAC MCCARTHY COPYRIGHT This book is dedicated to JOHN FRANCIS MCCARTHY OceanofPDF.com When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he’d reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. Nights dark beyond darkness and the days more gray each one than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world. His hand rose and fell softly with each precious breath. He pushed away the plastic tarpaulin and raised himself in the stinking robes and blankets and looked toward the east for any light but there was none. In the dream from which he’d wakened he had wandered in a cave where the child led him by the hand. Their light playing over the wet flowstone walls. Like pilgrims in a fable swallowed up and lost among the inward parts of some granitic beast. Deep stone flues where the water dripped and sang. Tolling in the silence the minutes of the earth and the hours and the days of it and the years without cease. Until they stood in a great stone room where lay a black and ancient lake. And on the far shore a creature that raised its dripping mouth from the rimstone pool and stared into the light with eyes dead white and sightless as the eggs of spiders. It swung its head low over the water as if to take the scent of what it could not see. Crouching there pale and naked and translucent, its alabaster bones cast up in shadow on the rocks behind it.
