\)l :l n January 9, 1978, officials of the new Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana 'tff:f ijur 'ii I i Islands were inaugurated, marking a new era in NMI history. For the first time in '·\·· i •.· more than 300 years, the people of the islands became self-governing.

CD M MiONWEALTH In the intervening 19 years we have accomplished a great deal. The economy of the NMI has exploded. In 1978, income totaled about $20 million, more than half of which came from federal funds. By 1995, income had increased tenfold, to almost $200 million, all of which was DAY local! We tend to forget how far the islands have come because all of us, in our daily lives, know how far we still must go.

Let us this Commonwealth Day, 1997, renew our commitment to governing ourselves and handling our own affairs. With the right of self-goverrunent comes responsibility. Let us work together to improve our schools, our infrastructure, our community. So that on the 20th Anniversary of Commonwealth Day, January 9, 1998, we can, among other things, point with pride to uncrowded schools that provide good education, and toast our future with tap water.
