SOCIAL CONTEXT According to data furnished by the general census in Brazil in 2000, Brazil had a total population of approximately 170 million inhabitants.1 The next general census, in 2010, revealed that the Brazilian population had reached approximately 200 million.2 In reli- gious terms, Brazil was and continues to be a nation in which Roman Catholicism pre- dominates, low church attendance by the Catholic faithful notwithstanding. Since the be- ginning of the 20th century, however, there has been a continuous decline in the number of Catholics in the composition of the Brazilian population. This tendency was more acute after the 1960s and is shown every ten years by the official census.3 An accentuated reli- gious syncretism also exists, with believers frequenting the worship services of more than one religious confession at the same time. Meanwhile, recent decades have witnessed the strong phenomenon of religious diversification, with a significant reduction in the per- centage of Catholics in the makeup of the Brazilian population,4 owing to the growth of other religious groups, especially the so-called Evangelical or Pentecostal churches.5 A 2007 study by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, Centre for Social Policies, demon- strated, however, a trend in recent years towards stabilization of these percentages, as observed in the number of Roman Catholics.6 Even so, the changes in the composition of the Brazilian population that have occurred in the last few decades have created a diverse FR. While – according to the pamphlet – the most favorable source of propaganda came from the conversion of no- bles and princes, it was also noted that the numerous travelers and foreigners already living in the city were likewise caught in this net. The “Apostates and Spies” were high-profile figures and were well-known throughout Europe. Among them were Gaspar Schoppe, Giusto Calvino, the nephew of the great reformer, who converted during the Holy Year of 1600, the Frenchman Guil- laume Reboul and Johannes Faber, “a Physician at the Hospital of the Holy Ghost.”1 Johannes Faber, a Lincean physician and papal herbalist, was one of Georg Fischer’s interlocutors in Rome to whom he had sent a dozen letters. And it is likely that he intervened with the Holy Office for the releaze from seizure of Cristoforo Pescatore’s inheritance and its transfer to Germany.2 They had lived in Rome during the same period of time, perhaps even met, and Faber would die three years after the goldsmith Cristoforo Pescatore. -

Jubilee of Mercy MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR THE PROMOTION OF THE NEW EVANGELIZATION USEFUL INFORMATION REGARDING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE JUBILEE The Jubilee of Mercy was announced by Pope Francis as a year to be lived intensely in each particular Church, allowing every person to encounter the mercy of God the Father through diligent labor for the Church’s mission there. The most evident sign of this pastoral care is the chance to open a Door of Mercy in every diocese. These doors, analogous to the Holy Doors of the Papal Basilicas in Rome, will permit even people who cannot travel to Rome to make a Jubilee pilgrimage. Doors of Mercy It will be the responsibility of the local Ordinary to decide in which church of the diocese the Door of Mercy will be opened. There should be a Door of Mercy opened in every diocese and eparchy of the world (cfr. MV 3). In addition to the Door of Mercy chosen for the diocese, the diocesan Ordinaries may also permit the opening of other Doors of Mercy at Shrines of particular importance, especially where there is the happy possibility that the many faithful who visit the shrine may always encounter the merciful embrace of the Father in confession (cfr. MV 3). It is good for the extraordinary possibility for the Jubilee indulgence to be recognized by the faithful precisely as an opportunity out of the ordinary, so that they may live it as a time particularly fitting for embarking on the path of conversion. Fostering the proper appreciation for the special sign of the Door of Mercy will facilitate this invitation to conversion. -

The Holy See URBI ET ORBI MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS EASTER 2021 Saint Peter’s Basilica Easter, 4 April 2021 [Multimedia] Dear Brothers and Sisters, a good, happy and peaceful Easter! Today, throughout the world, the Church’s proclamation resounds: “Jesus, who was crucified, has risen as he said. Alleluia!” The Easter message does not offer us a mirage or reveal a magic formula. It does not point to an escape from the difficult situation we are experiencing. The pandemic is still spreading, while the social and economic crisis remains severe, especially for the poor. Nonetheless – and this is scandalous – armed conflicts have not ended and military arsenals are being strengthened. That is today’s scandal. In the face of, or better, in the midst of this complex reality, the Easter message speaks concisely of the event that gives us the hope that does not disappoint: “Jesus who was crucified has risen”. It speaks to us not about angels or ghosts, but about a man, a man of flesh and bone, with a face and a name: Jesus. The Gospel testifies that this Jesus, crucified under Pontius Pilate for claiming he was the Christ, the Son of God, rose on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, just as he had foretold to his disciples. The crucified Jesus, none other, has risen from the dead. God the Father raised Jesus, his Son, because he fully accomplished his saving will. Jesus took upon himself our weakness, our infirmities, even our death. He endured our sufferings and bore the weight of our sins. -

At the time of this writing, over two million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed world- wide (with America comprising over a quarter of that number), and over one hundred thousand people have died. Shopping malls, movie theaters, restaurants, school campuses, sports stadiums, and airports are all emptying out, countless people are self-quarantining in their homes, and the economy is showing signs of serious distress. What seemed just a short time ago a fairly stable state of affairs, medically, politically, and economically, has been turned upside down—and we will likely be dealing with the virus and its impacts for months to come. -

1 The Labyrinth at Chartres, the Malachy Prophecy, and Benedict XVI (Copyright 2013) Prologue The thing to be kept in mind when dealing with symbolism and trying to understand what it may mean in the context of the tradition within which it is considered, is that what matters are the beliefs and practices of the participants in that tradition, their frame of mind, their point of view, the way they perceive and interpret what happens from within their tradition, not what an “objective observer” might perceive, conceive, or deceive himself with from without that tradition. It is in that optic that we shall look at the prediction of the prophecy and the highly symbolic nature of the timing of both the announcement of the resignation of Benedict XVI and the effective date of that resignation.1 1. N. 200419a Sunday 19.04.2020 Holy Mass on the Feast of Divine Mercy At 11.00 today, in the Church of Santo Spirito in Sassia, the Holy Father celebrated privately the Holy Mass for the twentieth anniversary of the canonisation of Sr. Faustina Kowalska and the institution of Divine Mercy Sunday. The following is the homily pronounced by the Pope during the Eucharistic celebration: Homily of the Holy Father Last Sunday we celebrated the Lord’s resurrection; today we witness the resurrection of his disciple. It has already been a week, a week since the disciples had seen the Risen Lord, but in spite of this, they remained fearful, cringing behind “closed doors” (Jn 20:26), unable even to convince Thomas, the only one absent, of the resurrection. What does Jesus do in the face of this timorous lack of belief? He returns and, standing in the same place, “in the midst” of the disciples, he repeats his greeting: “Peace be with you!” (Jn 20:19, 26). He starts all over. The resurrection of his disciple begins here, from this faithful and patient mercy, from the discovery that God never tires of reaching out to lift us up when we fall. He wants us to see him, not as a taskmaster with whom we have to settle accounts, but as our Father who always raises us up. In life we go forward tentatively, uncertainly, like a toddler who takes a few steps and falls; a few steps more and falls again, yet each time his father puts him back on his feet. -

This is a question that Francis undoubtedly reflected upon when the coronavirus began its rapid spread around Italy and the globe. The answer does not consist in live-streaming Mass so that everyone can follow him through the Internet, even though he is in fact doing that each morning. In fact, “following” the celebration of Mass through the media, theologically speaking, is not “participating.” There is no such thing as media sacraments. Mass on television cannot replace the sacrament of the Eucharist. If one cannot attend Mass, watching a televised Mass can be a great spiritual help, but the viewer doesn’t participate in the sacrament. Only a pope What, then, can the pope do to make himself actively present in the life of each member of the faithful? There’s a unique act he can perform: the papal blessing “Urbi et Orbi,” which translates from Latin “to the city [of Rome] and to the world.” FOLLOW THE BLESSING HERE. It’s an act which no other bishop can perform, and which — in contrast to the Mass — can take place effectively through the media, for the good of the souls of the faithful. Can Jesus Raise Our Hope from the Dead? Cardinal Michael Czerny SJ In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, many people feel as if they have been living one long Lent since Ash Wednesday 2020, writes Cardinal Michael Czerny SJ, and are seeking joy in a restoration of ‘the old normal’, even though it was fraught with problems. But the joy that Easter brings, this and every year, is one of renewal and conversion, not of a return to ‘the way things were’. Lent, with its calls to penitence and customs of privation, can feel long. It reflects the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness fasting and struggling with temptation at the beginning of his ministry (Mark 1:13). But for months it has felt as if Lent began on Ash Wednesday 2020. That was 26 February, and on 11 March the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 to be a pandemic. And that of course has been dragging on relentlessly for over 400 days until this Easter of 2021. ‘Last year we were more shocked,’ recalls Pope Francis, but ‘this year we are more sorely tried.’[1] From the beginning, the pandemic has been so hard on so many, and continues to weigh all of us down. So if we are looking back on a truly trying Lent of 400+ days, how can we envisage and embrace an appropriate, a proportional and a timely Easter? Should this Easter not somehow be ten times ‘the length and width, height and depth’ (Ephesians 3:18) of an ordinary Easter? Our first response might be: ‘Oh if only we could recover the Easter of 2019! If only we could go back to the old normal!’ But no.
