Under the supervision of various mana­ gers, Baltimore's eighteenth-century theaters changed from makeshift housing to permanent theater buildings by the end of the century. In 1772, the American Company presented Baltimore's first recorded theatri­ cal performances in a stable oonverted into a temporary playhouse. After the Amerioan Revolution, the first company to entertain in Balti­ more, Thomas Wall's Maryland Company of Comedians, acted first in a sail warehouse and later in a coffee house. But success in the temporary theaters encouraged Wall to construct, in 1782, the first building in Baltimore designed as a theater. After its construction, another, built by Hallam and Henry, followed in 1786, and in 1794* Thomas Wignell erected the Holliday Street Theatre on a plot of land on which theaters stood until 19^7 • Performers of every variety trod the stage in these early Baltimore theaters.

JOHN DRYDEN (1631 – 1700) HIS LIFE: John Dryden was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the “Age of Dryden”. The son of a country gentleman, Dryden grew up in the country. When he was 11 years old the Civil War broke out. Both his father’s and mother’s families sided with Parliament against the king, but Dryden’s own sympathies in his youth are unknown. About 1644 Dryden was admitted to Westminster School, where he received a predominantly classical education under the celebrated Richard Busby. His easy and lifelong familiarity with classical literature begun at Westminster later resulted in idiomatic English translations. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1654. What Dryden did between leaving the university in 1654 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 is not known with certainty. In 1659 his contribution to a memorial volume for Oliver Cromwell marked him as a poet worth watching. His “heroic stanzas” were mature, considered, sonorous, and sprinkled with those classical and scientific allusions that characterized his later verse. This kind of public poetry was always one of the things Dryden did best. On December 1, 1663, he married Elizabeth Howard, the youngest daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st earl of Berkshire.

    FALL 1991 45 The First Critical Assessments of A Streetcar Named Desire: The Streetcar Tryouts and the Reviewers Philip C. Kolin The first review of A Streetcar Named Desire in a New York City paper was not of the Broadway premiere of Williams's play on December 3, 1947, but of the world premiere in New Haven on October 30, 1947. Writing in Variety for November 5, 1947, Bone found Streetcar "a mixture of seduction, sordid revelations and incidental perversion which will be revolting to certain playgoers but devoured with avidity by others. Latter category will predomin­ ate." Continuing his predictions, he asserted that Streetcar was "important theatre" and that it would be one "trolley that should ring up plenty of fares on Broadway" ("Plays Out of Town"). Like Bone, almost everyone else interested in the history of Streetcar has looked forward to the play's reception on Broadway. Yet one of the most important chapters in Streetcar's stage history has been neglected, that is, the play's tryouts before that momentous Broadway debut. Oddly enough, bibliographies of Williams fail to include many of the Streetcar tryout reviews and surveys of the critical reception of the play commence with the pronouncements found in the New York Theatre Critics' Reviews for the week of December 3, 1947. Such neglect is unfortunate. Streetcar was performed more than a full month and in three different cities before it ever arrived on Broadway. Not only was the play new, so was its producer. Making her debut as a producer with Streetcar, Irene Selznick was one of the powerhouses behind the play.

Jamil Amman Arab University, Amman. Jordan. Abstract— This article is designed to highlight the innovation of George Farquhar in his play The Beaux Stratagem, and to illuminate the factors behind its everlasting appeal to audiences since its first performance in 1707 and after. The play still retains a magnificent appeal to all audiences for centuries, and remains alluring and fascinating to even the 21st Century audiences. Its magnitude lies in the sure-fire comic devices and witty characters as well in the profound insight adjoined the comic situations and events. As a transitional playwright, Farquhar has one foot in the declining traditions of the Comedy of Manners, and the other foot in the growing vogue of Sentimental Comedy, employing some character types of the old tradition with innovative alteration, together with introducing prototypes of the coming sentimental types. To keep pace with the shift in tone, he modifies the purpose of his play to suit the specifications of critics, moralists and theatre goers. With its innovative particulars, it sets an early premise for the approaching changes in the dramatic conventions and trends of the 18th Century comedies. More crucially, it forms a gateway to move into the world of sentimentalism, or a bridge between the two. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.

Trostel Today Mondawmin is a tree-less site containing a not-so-successful shopping center surrounded by vast parking areas with a scattering of cars. But 150 years ago, when the house was newly completed and the grounds were being laid out and the gardens planted, Mondawmin was one of the show places of Baltimore County. The estate, on the outskirts of Baltimore, was the creation of Dr . Patrick Macaulay. Dr. Macaulay was born in Yorktown, Virginia, in 1791 and educated at St. Mary's College in Baltimore, after which he studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania . Motes, " THE PHILADELPHIA OF OUR ANCESTORS,"—In every large city of the United States, other than Philadelphia, one of the leading news- papers, contains a department of geneology, some of which have been printed for nearly a quarter of a century. To supply this want in Philadelphia, the North American has arranged with Mr. Frank Willing Leach to take the editorial charge of a page department in the magazine section of its Sunday issue, to be entitled "The Philadelphia of our Ancestors." For upwards of twenty years, Mr. Leach has been engaged in geneological and historical investigations, and has collected a vast amount of material relating to the inhabitants of Philadelphia and ad- joining sections of Colonial and Revolutionary days, and his abilities as a chronicler and narrator of past events, have been well known and ap- preciated. His initial contributions to this department appeared in the issue of June 9th., and in addition to the historical and biographical data which it contained, considerable space was devoted to geneological queries submitted by readers of the North American regarding their ancestors, to which answers will be furnished in subsequent issues. Suggestions will also be made to aid those who desire to make inquiry about their ancestors, but do not know what steps to take in that direc- tion. We believe this department will prove of the greatest possible interest to all citizens of Philadelphia and its environs, certainly, no one is better equipped to take charge of it, than the gentleman who has been selected for the task.
