Relapse and Recovery Musical Career . 1992 – 1998: Eminem (Marshall Bruce Mathers) was initially signed to FBT Productions in 1992. 1998 – 1999: in 1998 Eminem released his first major studio album, The Slim Shady. 1999 – 2001: The Marshall Mathers (Album) was released in May 2000. It went on to sell 1.76 million copies in the first week. Musical Career . 2002 – 2003: Eminem's third major album, The Eminem Show, was released in summer 2002, this album was considerably less inflammatory than The Marshall Mathers. 2004 – 2005: In 2004, Eminem released his fourth major album, Encore. It sold over 700,000 copies in the first week of release. 2005 – 2008: In 2005 some people speculated that Eminem was considering ending his rapping career. In 2009 Eminem reported in a press release that he would be releasing two new albums that year. Personal Life - Family . He was married twice to Kimberley Anne Scott. Their second divorce was finalized in December of the same year, agreeing to share custody of their daughter, Hailie Jade Scott. Eminem adopted two other daughters: . Alaina Mathers, the child of Kimberley Scott's sister. Whitney, Scott's child from a previous relationship. Personal Life – Legal Troubles . Mathers was arrested 2000 during an altercation at a store with Douglas Dail, where he pulled out a gun. The following day, he saw his wife kissing to John Guerrera in the parking lot of a Café, and he assaulted him. In 2001, Mathers had an serious argument with an employee of Psychopathic Records, Eminem gave him a fine around $2,000 as well as several hours of community service. Influences and Rapping Thechnique . Eminem technique is characterised by: . his varied and humorous subject matter, connecting with his audience, carrying a concept over a series of albums and complex rhyme schemes. Eminem has named several MCs who influenced his rapping style. For example Esham, Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, Big Daddy, Kane and . Ice-T. As well as his first movie 8 Mile, Em released his 4th album, The Eminem Show. He revealed the more mature, slightly subdued side of himself. This album had many hits, including Without Me, Cleanin Out My Closet, Sayin Goodbye to Hollywood… He even sings on the album-on a song made especially for his daughter Hailie, the only girl in his life for whom he has respect for. Lawsuits over sampling in rap music forced producers to rethink the ways they made music while crack cocaine and the War on Drugs wreaked havoc in urban communities across the nation, as it did in the Clan’s home borough of Staten Island, New York. Before the formation of the group, Gary “GZA” Grice, had managed to land a recording contract as a solo artist, but his marketing was mismanaged and his career stagnated. He returned in 1992 as one of the nine member collective, who billed themselves as kung fu movie buffs melding low-fi, eerie productions with realistic raps about ghetto life. Drawing from the vibrant underground rap scene of New York City in the 1970s and 1980s, Brooklyn’s rich African American chess tradition, the teachings of the Five Percenters, and the cult following for Hong Kong action cinema, the Clan became a huge hit across the country. Each member fashioned a unique masculine identity for himself, bolstering their hardcore underground image while pushing the boundaries of acceptable expressions of manhood in rap music.
