The XTERRA Northeast Cup at Sugarbush Resort will dish out $10,000 in prize money, bigger points for amateurs racing in the Series, and most importantly, qualifying slots into the XTERRA World Championship in Maui.

The course itself is epic and plays out on the award-winning terrain of Sugarbush (that’s right – the place was ranked No. 1 in the East for terrain variety in Ski Magazine’s “best resorts on the continent’ survey).

Founded to help physically challenged athletes reach their athletic goals, the non-profit Challenged Athletes Foundation is the official charity of the Paul Mitchell Cut-a-thon at each Cup stop on the XTERRA America Tour.

Four-time XTERRA amateur National Champion Matt Boobar from Stratton Mountain, Vermont recently pre-rode the Northeast Cup course, and this was his review... I would definitely call the bike course "epic”

Other courses could be considered more difficult because of the heat, altitude, and pure speed – but after all is said and done I bet this course ranks up there with the most challenging and scenic of all-time. The climbs are on the tip of saddle in your granny gear just clawing your way up and then the downhills, single track, and even the flat areas put your bike handling skills to good use. The first 15 minute climb is very steep so your first impression might be "wow this is hard", but then the course gets better and better with a lot of fun single track. Once you get to the top, the course is ridiculously awesome. I mean, true new England style single track, unlike any other XTERRA. Zip under and around actual maple sap lines, around and around rooty switchbacks, through a maze of techy rock and root little drop-ins mixed with short power climbs. After 20 minutes of non-stop (mainly descending) single track you’ll finally get a break on a paved road for a few minutes, then go back in the woods for a very long super fast single track descent and it ends with one final 10 minute grind up to T2. Even the fittest, best skilled humans will be over an hour on this course. See it for yourself: Will Kelsay was wearing a helmet cam during the pre-ride with Matt Boobar in the Green Mountains of Vermont and posted the video on his website at willkelsay.com. Other course notes: The swim is in the Sugarbush snowmaking pond (62 degrees) and will feature two 750 laps with no beach run in between. The run course skirts a bear habitat closed during this time of year to humans, so competitors could see a moose or a bear out there (but not to worry as they are harmless, but really cool to see in the wild). The Caveman is a resilient creature. The women’s race pits series leader and 3-time XTERRA World Champ Melanie McQuaid from Canada against XTERRA USA national champ Shonny Vanlandingham. In five head-to-head meetings this year McQuaid has won four races and Shonny V won the other (the South Central Cup in Arkansas on June 20). The wildcard is 3-time XTERRA European Tour Champ Renata Bucher from Switzerland, as this grueling climb may suit the uber-lightweight Bucher bet- ter than anyone. A pair of Canadians – Danelle Kabush and Christine Jeffrey – are always in the mix, Nicola Leary (2009 XTERRA New Zealand Champ) will be making her XTERRA debut on American soil at this race, and adventure racing Sari Anderson is throwing her hat into the mix as well. Other American challengers include the young and talented likes of Erin Kummer (No. 6 in Cup Series) and Emma Garrard (No. 7 in Cup Series).

It’s hard to say how Stoltz, who hasn’t run since Richmond (June 14), will fare in the Green Mountains but his presence alone will certainly change the dynamic of the pro race. Stoltz has won four of the six XTERRA Cup races this year and sits atop the pro series leaderboard - 17 points ahead of Josiah Middaugh (Stoltz’ four firsts and one 5th = 469 / Middaugh has one win, 3-2nd's, 1-3rd = 452 pts).

Middaugh, however, will not be racing in Sugarbush, opting for the extra rest and training prior to the XTERRA Mountain Championship in his backyard at Beaver Creek Resort in Colorado next Saturday, July 18.

There will still be plenty of competition for the tall South African, however, with fellow countryman Dan Hugo, French powerhouse Nico Lebrun, American staples Seth Wealing and Branden Rakita, and Brit mountain bike standout Sam Gardner. AUGUSTA, MI (May 17, 2009) - Melanie McQuaid celebrated her 36th birthday in style by joining fellow 3x XTERRA World Champ Conrad Stoltz on the top step of the XTERRA Midwest Cup podium at Fort Custer State Park just outside of Battle Creek, Michigan. Stoltz and McQuaid are now 2-for-2 in XTERRA Cup Series racing, as both captured the first race of the year at Lake Las Vegas, Nevada earlier this month. 27 RACE # 3 - 2009 XTERRA SOUTHEAST CUP RESULTS

Shelby County, AL (May 23, 2009) - Another state, a wildly different course, yet the same result as Conrad "The Caveman" Stoltz and Melanie McQuaid roll to their third straight regional championship victories, this time at the XTERRA Southeast Cup at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL. At about the same time the endurance community celebrated the life of cycling and triathlon great Steve Larsen (who passed away on Tuesday, May 19) with memorial rides and runs in his hometown of Bend, OR, many of Larsen’s friends in sport were riding and running in honor of him in the southern woods of Alabama. Leading the charge was Stoltz, who said "the technical parts are usually my strengths, but today I couldn't focus. I did feel like I had amazing strength today though. This was a great victory for Steve." Many of the riders dedicated their efforts today to Larsen and his family, including Stoltz and McQuaid. "Steve was such a huge inspiration for me coming from a mountain biking background. I felt really strong today,” said McQuaid. It was certainly a day where XTERRA athletes could find inspiration all around, as even the sports all-time winningest athlete Jamie Whitmore (cancer survivor/battler) came out from California to be one of the race announcers. In addition, TEAM 413 Gracerunner ministries held a sunrise service before the race and all paused for a moment of silence in Larsen’s memory.

Farragut State Park - Athol, ID (June 6, 2009) - Melanie McQuaid stayed perfect in 2009 while Dan Hugo broke through at the XTERRA Northwest Cup at Farragut State Park just north of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho this afternoon. Over the last two years on the XTERRA America Tour the 23-year-old from Stellenbosch, South Africa (the same home- town as Conrad Stoltz) finished in the top 4 in seven straight races including three runner-ups, but today the sports youngest and brightest star found the top step for the first time. "It sure did help that Josiah (Middaugh) and Mike (Vine) weren't here and Conrad got a puncture, but it's a great start and I'm super excited," said the ever-humble Hugo. Hugo came out of the swim in the incredibly gorgeous Lake Pend Oreille (the 5th deepest lake in the U.S. at 1,158-feet) with the lead pack that included Stoltz, Craig Evans, Seth Wealing, and Christine Jeffrey in just over 22 minutes. As planned, Hugo stuck on Stoltz’ wheel until about three-quarters of the way through the first of two 11-mile loops on the bike when a nail lodged itself sideways through Stoltz’ tire and Hugo found himself all alone in front, where he stayed the rest of the way. In the women’s race “Big Fish” Jeffrey put nearly three minutes on McQuaid during the swim and held the lead through the first lap of the bike where McQuaid was 1:30 back, but by the bike-to-run transition McQuaid – boosted by the best bike of the day (1:33:31) – was more than four minutes in front. Danelle Kabush made up a minute on Jeffrey to finish in 2nd (her best of the year), and Jeffrey was 3rd to make it an all-Canadian top three. “Canadians rule, ehh,” said Jeffrey.

Richmond, Virginia (June 14, 2009) - The legend of the Caveman continues to grow. Conrad Stoltz sliced open the top of his foot shuffling across the bottom of the James River while helping to put a course buoy back in place just three minutes before the cannon blast signaled the start of the XTERRA Atlantic Cup in downtown Richmond, and crushed the field anyway. "The cut was so deep I could see tendons," said Stoltz, who posted a series of graphic pre-and-post op pictures on his facebook page. Fellow competitor and long-time XTERRA ambassador Dr. Kathy Coutinho of Fairfax Station, VA helped wrap plastic around the wound literally seconds before the start and off he went. News of the carnage spread quickly, and Dr. Matt Marchal of Altius Family and Sports Medicine was waiting for Stoltz in the swim-to-bike transition where he poured per- oxide and bandaged the wound and sent the Caveman on his way in a matter of seconds (his T1 split was 46 seconds!). "Dr. Matt was waiting by my bike and it was like a Nascar pit stop, took no time at all," said Stoltz, who went on to have the fastest bike split (1:01:44) and hit the run with a one-minute lead over Middaugh and Hugo and ultimately won the race Curt Schilling-style with a bloody shoe. After a series of high fives and "holy cow" comments after crossing the fin- ish line Stoltz was back with Dr. Marchal getting cleaned up, stitched up (seven in all), and iced up all while chatting non- chalantly with the local TV and Richmond Times Dispatch reporters. It was his fourth win in five years in Richmond and fourth win in five XTERRA Cup Series races this season. In women's race Melanie McQuaid, "inspired by Conrad, the tough guy of the year award winner" led from start-to-fin- ish and stayed perfect in an overwhelmingly imperfect, unpredictable sport. It's McQuaid's fifth straight XTERRA Cup Series win this year, and second-in-a-row in Richmond. The weather in Richmond was downright pleasant, cool with overcast conditions.

North Little Rock, AR (June 20, 2009) - For the first time in 2009 a pair of Americans took the top honors at an XTERRA Cup Championship race as Josiah Middaugh from Vail, Colorado and Shonny Vanlandingham from Durango, Colorado won the men's and women's pro titles on a sweltering hot day at the XTERRA South Central Cup in the Heart of Arkansas. It's the first win for Middaugh since his XTERRA East title last year, and the first for Vanlandingham since her 2008 Southeast Championship in Alabama. Middaugh and Vanlandingham were the top Americans in the XTERRA U.S. Pro Series last year, and after six-of-eight races in the Cup Series are in the same spot this year - with both sitting in second place behind Conrad Stoltz and Melanie McQuaid, respectively. The win by Vanlandingham, the most successful mountain biker in NORBA history with 15 national race wins and three Series titles, marks her second XTERRA Championship victory and also snaps McQuaid's five-race win streak. 33 HOW THE XTERRA AMERICA TOUR WORKS FOR AMATEURS

The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete for within their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Utah on September 26. This year there are 60 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territory of Guam and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan). It marks the 13th straight year of expansion for XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works: 1) CHOOSE REGION: There are 8 regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTHEAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York. ATLANTIC (AT) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTHEAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands. MIDWEST (MW) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTHCENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas. MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTHWEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. WEST (W) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) DETERMINE YOUR DIVISION/AGE GROUP: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2009. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65-69 (m), 70+ (m), and we also have Collegiate and Physically Challenged Divisions.

Collegiate Division: To qualify as a collegiate athlete, a current student ID must be presented at registration. When there are at least three athletes from two or more schools, a team award will also be presented. Athletes in the collegiate division get collegiate points (not age group points).

Physically Challenged Division: There are two physically challenged age groups, 15-39 and 40+, and 6 categories: Below the knee amputee, above the knee amputee, below the elbow amputee, above the elbow amputee, blind and impaired/les autres.

3) RACE AND SCORE: Series competitors race for points at their choice of 60 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races & XTERRA Cup Series (XCS) races. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like and their best three finishes count towards their total points score. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event in their region. Note: Athletes do not have to qualify to race in the XTERRA Cup Series events.

4) COUNT ‘EM UP: Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. Athletes can earn more points at Cup Series races because, generally, participation is higher and the courses are tougher. If an athlete races at more than one XTERRA Cup Series event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the XTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems:

5) BECOMING A REGIONAL CHAMP: At the end of the regular season in early September, the athlete with the most points - by gender, by division, by region - earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey. In addition, the highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the XTERRA USA Championship in Utah (qualifying spots based on chart below).

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Any collegian with a current photo ID can race for their school as an individual. Athletes do not need to be a member of a school club or team. There are no age groups in the collegiate division, just male and female categories. Collegiate racers collect points in the XTERRA America Tour Series but are not eligible for age group awards - they only race against other collegiate entries. Whenever there are three athletes from two or more schools entered in the same race they’ll go against each other for school pride in the college team division. There must be at least two schools with teams for a team award to be presented. A “team” must consist of at least 3 male or female members. There are no mixed teams. A team can have more entrants, but less than three will not constitute a team. Points for team awards (male and female) will count the finishing positions of the smallest number entered by a qualifying team. Example: College A has 5 men; College B has 7 men; College C has 9 men. Only the fastest 5 finishers will count towards the team awards. Points for team awards will be calculated based on the finishing positions of the team members. The lowest total is the winner. Example: Each team counts 3 athletes. Team A finishes 1, 8 and 15 overall for a total number 24. Team B finishes 5, 6 and 10 for a total number 21. Team C finishes 2, 9 and 20 for a total number of 31. Team B wins. In no case will more than 7 athletes count towards the team awards regardless of the total number of entries by any one team. Should a club enter more than 7 men or women, the coach must nominate the 7 individuals he wants scored for team awards. Other members are still eligible for individual awards, but their finishing position will not be counted towards the team totals. Positions counted are overall positions in gender, not just collegiate entrants. This would include professional entries. Collegiate Cup: A Collegiate Cup award will be given when two or more schools have at least 3 men and 3 women per school represent- ed. Example: College A has 5 men, 2 women; College B has 7 men, 3 women. There can be no Collegiate Cup award as there are not 2 teams that meet the overall requirements. Should two or more schools have the necessary entries, scoring will be similar to the team scoring method with all finishing positions of qualified team members added. Also: Collegiate entrants race for separate awards. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female individual collegiate division finishers, the winning men’s and women’s teams, and the winner of the Collegiate Cup competition (if applicable). Pre-Registration is required for the XTERRA Collegiate Cup to be presented. Athletes competing in the Collegiate Division do not prevent XTERRA Age Group athletes from receiving XTERRA America Tour points. At the XTERRA Regional Champ races, collegians can enter the Sport distance but as an age group athlete. There is no college division in the half-distance XTERRA Sport race.
