The 28th ‘Dasha’ ceremony, which celebrates the start of Kuwait’s annual pearl diving trip, began at Kuwait Sea Sports Club under the auspices of the Kuwaiti leadership and in attendance of the Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah. The pills were professionally hidden in a container coming from Turkey. The operation was described as the largest seizure of drugs - an estimat- ed 10 million pills of Captagon worth 25 million Kuwaiti dinars! Authorities allowed the container to enter the country and followed it until its final destina- tion in an open area in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh. They wait- ed for three days, until a 28-year-old Syrian man came to receive it and was caught red-handed. Investigations will reveal the truth, but this should be a lesson, and that the Syrian, who could just be a mes- senger, is guilty too. -

Birth of a Colony North Carolina Guide for Educators Act IV—A New Voyage to Carolina, 1650–1710 Birth of a Colony Guide for Educators Birth of a Colony explores the history of North Carolina from the time of European exploration through the Tuscarora War. Presented in five acts, the video combines primary sources and expert commentary to bring this period of our history to life. Use this study guide to enhance students’ understanding of the ideas and information presented in the video. The guide is organized according to five acts. Included for each act are a synopsis, a vocabulary list, discussion questions, and lesson plans. Going over the vocabulary with students before watching the video will help them better understand the film’s content. Discussion questions will encourage students to think critically about what they have viewed. Lesson plans extend the subject matter, providing more information or opportunity for reflection. The lesson plans follow the new Standard Course of Study framework that takes effect with the 2012–2013 school year. With some adjustments, most of the questions and activities can be adapted for the viewing audience. Birth of a Colony was developed by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, in collaboration with UNC-TV and Horizon Productions. The first part explores the development of permanent English settlements in North Carolina. For nearly 70 years after the mysterious disappearance of the Lost Colony, North Carolina remained void of European settlement. -

CARIBBEAN APPEALS including Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Dominica, East Florida, Grenada, Guiana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Montserrat, Nevis, St. Christopher, St. Vincent, Tobago, Tortola, West Florida This preliminary list of appeals was constructed from index entries in the Acts of the Privy Council, Colonial Series (APC), beginning with the year 1674 and ending with 1783. The focus is on appeals or petitions for leave to appeal with a definite lower court decision. A list by colony and section number of matters indexed as appeals but for which no lower court decision is apparent is provided for each volume of the APC. A smattering of disputes, not indexed as appeals (and so noted in this list), are included if the APC abstract uses appeals language. Prize cases are not included if the matter was referred to the Committee for Hearing Appeals on Prize. Appeals are listed according to the location in the margin note unless otherwise explained. The spelling of the names of parties is accepted as presented in the APC abstracts. Appeals with John Doe or Richard Roe as named parties are treated as if those parties were individuals. Significant doubt about the identity of the respondent(s) results in the designation ‘X, appeal of” as the name of the case. Given the abbreviated nature of the abstracts, additional research in the Privy Council registers, in genealogical records, and on matters of procedure will be needed to clarify the case names throughout and establish their accuracy. If the APC only uses wording such as “petition of John Jones referred,” the action was not assumed to be an appeal. -

From the 1500s onwards the wealthy but land-strapped kingdoms of Europe – England, France, Spain, Holland and Portugal – became aware of the economic and strategic potential of this bountiful new continent across the Atlantic. Explorers, settlers, conquistadors,1 captains, merchants and speculators braved perilous sea voyages into the unknown to plant their flag in a land they knew little about. By the late 1600s, several European powers had claimed their own piece of North America, leading to territorial competition and nationalist tensions. For a time it seemed as if this ‘new world’ might develop as a mirror of the old, divided Europe. Arguably the strongest of these imperial powers was Great Britain. Britain’s African American slave military strength, naval dominance and mastery of trade gave it the edge in being sold. matters of empire; this was reflected in the claim that ‘Britons … never will be slaves!’2 in the popular anthem Rule, Britannia! The true purpose of British imperialism, however, was not to conquer or rule but to make money. London maintained the colonies as a valuable source of raw materials and a market for manufactured products. Most imperial legislation was therefore concerned with the regulation of trade. By the mid-1760s, British America had evolved into a remarkably independent colonial system. Warren 2011 Abstract King Philip’s War (1675-1676) was one of the bloodiest per capita in American history. Although hostile native groups damaged much of New England, Connecticut emerged unscathed from the conflict. Connecticut’s role has been obscured by historians’ focus on the disasters in the other colonies as well as a misplaced emphasis on “King Philip,” a chief sachem of the Wampanoag groups. Although Philip formed the initial hostile coalition and served as an important leader, he was later overshadowed by other sachems of stronger native groups such as the Narragansetts. Viewing the conflict through the lens of a ‘Great Narragansett War’ brings Connecticut’s role more clearly into focus, and indeed enables a more accurate narrative for the conflict. Connecticut achieved success where other colonies failed by establishing a policy of moderation towards the native groups living within its borders. This relationship set the stage for successful military operations. Local native groups, whether allied or neutral did not assist hostile Indians, denying them the critical intelligence necessary to coordinate attacks on Connecticut towns. The English colonists convinced allied Mohegan, Pequot, and Western Niantic warriors to support their military operations, giving Connecticut forces a decisive advantage in the field. -

Page 50 Chapter 12 By What Right Thomas Hobbes John Locke n their struggle for freedom, the colonists raised some age-old questions: By what right does government rule? When may men break the law? I "Obedience to government," a Tory minister told his congregation, "is every man's duty." But the Reverend Jonathan Boucher was forced to preach his sermon with loaded pistols lying across his pulpit, and he fled to England in September 1775. Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that when people are governed "under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such a Government." Both Boucher and Jefferson spoke to the question of whether citizens owe obedience to government. In an age when kings held near absolute power, people were told that their kings ruled by divine right. Disobedience to the king was therefore disobedience to God. During the seventeenth century, however, the English beheaded one King (King Charles I in 1649) and drove another (King James II in 1688) out of England. Philosophers quickly developed theories of government other than the divine right of kings to justify these actions. In order to understand the sources of society's authority, philosophers tried to imagine what people were like before they were restrained by government, rules, or law. This theoretical condition was called the state of nature. In his portrait of the natural state, Jonathan Boucher adopted the opinions of a well- known English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes believed that humankind was basically evil and that the state of nature was therefore one of perpetual war and conflict.
