96Th Annual Madonna Della Cava Feast VOL. 120 - NO. 34 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, AUGUST 19, 2016 $.35 A COPY 96th Annual Madonna Della Cava Feast This past weekend, thousands gathered to celebrate the 96th annual Madonna Della Cava Feast, which took place on Hanover and Battery Streets in Boston’s North End. The image of Maria SS Della Cava, Principal Patron of Pietraperzia, Sicily, was rediscovered miraculously in the year 1223 by a mute from Trapani who was directed by Our Lady to proceed to the outskirts of the town where the portrait of Our Lady would be found. In the process, his speech and hearing were restored. The fi rst words spoken by the mute were, “VIA MARIA SS DELLA CAVA.” The feast began on Friday evening with the exposition of the image of the Madonna, followed by a blessing and short procession. A variety of entertainment was provided over the weekend, with special guests Booty Vortex on Friday night, a tribute to Barry White featuring Jourdan Carroll on Saturday night, and Madonna Della Cava Men’s Society the Rule of 3 Band on Sunday night. The feast concluded on Sunday with a Mass at St. Stephen’s Church followed by a procession of the faithful, members of the Madonna Della Cava Society, and two marching bands — St. Alfi o’s and the Northeast Italian Band. The Madonna Della Cava Society of Boston was founded by Italian immigrants in the early 1900s. To read the miraculous story of Madonna Della Cava, visit the Society’s website at www.madonnadellacava.com. YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

TEDDY PENDERGRASS - IF YOU DON’T KNOW ME A Documentary Film by Olivia Lichtenstein 106 Mins This is the story of legendary singer, Teddy Pendergrass, the man who would have been the biggest R&B artist of all time. The story of a childhood in a Philadelphia ghetto; of the murders of his father and first manager; of sex, drugs, money and global fame; of the triumph against injustice; and of the tragic accident that changed his life forever at the age of only 31. His was a life where, despite poverty, racism, and violence, he managed to become one of the first African-American artists to go multi-platinum over and over again. A man who actively championed the rights of black artists when discrimination was rife. A man who in the years after becoming quadriplegic, overcame depression and thoughts of suicide and resumed doing what he loved best - making music. A man who left a priceless legacy after his death, with the music he had made and the people he touched. With revealing and exclusive interviews from the people who knew Teddy best, a soulful soundtrack, and rarely seen archive, it’s a story that all too few really know and which is crying out to be told… Hammersmith Odeon, London, February 3rd 1982. It’s a cold night and fans – almost all of them women - are swarming at the entrance eager to see their idol, the biggest male R&B artist of the time, even bigger then than closest rivals, Marvin Gaye and Barry White. Teddy Pendergrass – the Teddy Bear, the ‘Black Elvis’ - tall and handsome with a distinctive husky soulful voice that could melt a woman’s clothes clean off her body! 'It took Teddy eleven seconds to get to the point with a girl that would take me two dinners and a trip to meet her parents,' says Daniel Markus, one of his managers.

Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble: Motown Meets Jazz at the Annenberg Center By VICTOR L. SCHERMER, Published: December 18, 2015 | 997 views View related photos Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble Annenberg Center: Harold Prince Theater Motown Meets Jazz Philadelphia, PA December 11, 2015 Philadelphia-based Lifeline Music Coalition has for over a decade sponsored jazz events which are eclectic in taste and attract fans by making the music listenable and providing enjoyable atmospherics. Thus it has been with their Philadelphia Jazz and Poetry Festival, West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival, Woodmere Art Museum Jazz Series, and Philadelphia United Jazz Festival. Their emphasis on accessibility combined with serious music making was carried forward in this concert of Motown Records standards featuring Lifeline co-founder Warren Oree's Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble. The concert's popularity a few weeks prior required the need for an extra performance to accommodate the overflow, which gave this reviewer, a serious jazz connoisseur who also harbors nostalgia for the Motown sound, a chance to catch the event. Jazz and Motown were wedded from the beginning, when Barry Gordy recruited musicians from the hot Detroit jazz clubs to work with his soon to be top-of-the-chart singers like the Temptations, The Four Tops, "Smokey" Robinson, and Stevie Wonder. In particular, the The Funk Brothers migrated from the jazz scene to Motown Records, providing backup for pop music like no others before them. Over the years, performers and venues have tried to capture the Motown sound with a jazz twist with varying degrees of success. The two pitfalls to which they have sometimes been susceptible are, on the one hand, to imitate the Motown performers and, on the other, to tack on jazz fusion and other styles that have little to do with the Motown tradition.

  • A Conversation with the Architects of the Philly Sound, Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff Scott Paton
Unedited version of Goldmine cover story, Issue #737, Oct. 28, 2008 A conversation with the architects of the Philly Sound, Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff Scott Paton A step into the lobby at 309 S. Broadway in Philadelphia is a step back into time. The gilded, gated doors close as the elevator operator punches the button for the second floor. Moments later, the pulleys and cable come to a stop, and the doors open on to a lobby and offices that seem frozen in time, some 30-odd years ago. To the casual observer, a professional makeover might be in order. But to a fan of early-‘60s pop or ‘70s soul music, the surroundings are resplendent in their untouched glory, a virtual shrine to two creative, indelible eras in recorded history. The home of Cameo-Parkway Records from 1956 to 1967, this building drew aspiring songwriters, from near and far, hoping to pitch their tunes to the likes of Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell and the Orlons. Among those young hopefuls were poet/lyricist Kenneth Gamble and keyboardist extraordinaire Leon Huff, and while their early attempts to “storm the castle” were often thwarted, they ultimately ascended to become the preeminent writer/producers on the local scene, and the most important force in R&B/Soul music since the heyday of Motown Records. In 1972, they purchased the building for their own enterprise, Philadelphia International Records. As architects of “the Philly Sound”, Gamble & Huff crafted sophisticated funk classics for the O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blues, Teddy Pendergrass, the Intruders, Lou Rawls and others that ushered in the Disco Era, setting a standard for dance- friendly, yet lyrical songcraft, that remains unmatched.

  • I Hear a Symphony
1 I Hear a Symphony BLACK MASCULINITY AND THE DISCO TURN You should see this whole Roxy Music thing. It’s so elegant and cool and -fashionable. —Nile Rodgers to Bernard Edwards, cofounders of -Chic isco snuck up on America like a covert operation. This wasn’t how it had been in the sixties, when shifts in popular music—the arrival of the mop-headed British Invasion bands, Bob Dylan’s galvanizing electric turn, the emergence of Dpsychedelic rock—were unmissable cultural events immediately accorded the status of milestones. The rock “ revolution” of the sixties, like the Vietnam War and the protests it provoked, was the object of intense media coverage. Newsweek, Life, Time, and all the rest pounced on the story with prairie-fire speed. In a blink, whole new publications, including that soon-to-be arbiter of countercultural taste, Rolling Stone, emerged to chronicle the music, personalities, and culture of rock. The major labels may have been bewildered by the scruffiness, long hair, and druggy vibe of groups such as Big Brother and the Holding Company and the Grateful Dead, but they barely paused before racing to sign them up, even when they were little known outside of San Francisco’s hippie enclave, Haight--Ashbury. Six years later, when another musical revolution was taking shape, record companies opened neither their arms nor their coffers, with the result that disco developed slowly and at first largely off the official map. By the time Vince Aletti wrote about what he called “party music” and “discotheque rock,” in a fall 1973 issue of Rolling Stone, gay men had been dancing in discos for three years.
