Indeed I do not hesitate to say that it has done more to enhance our understandings of the challenges of urban life and urban inequality than any other media event or scholarly publication, including studies by social scientists…The Wire develops morally complex characters on each side of the law, and with its scrupulous exploration of the inner workings of various institutions, including drug-dealing gangs, the police, politicians, unions, public schools, and the print media, viewers become aware that individuals’ decisions and behaviour are often shaped by - and indeed limited by - social, political, and economic forces beyond their control". Professor William Julius Wilson, Harvard University Seminar about The Wire, 4th April 2008. Teacher EducationJames Quarterly, Trier Spring 2010 Representations of Education in HBO’s The Wire, Season 4 By James Trier The Wire is a crime drama that aired for five seasons on the Home Box Of- fice (HBO) cable channel from 2002-2008. The entire series is set in Baltimore, Maryland, and as Kinder (2008) points out, “Each season The Wire shifts focus to a different segment of society: the drug wars, the docks, city politics, education, and the media” (p. 52). The series explores, in Lanahan’s (2008) words, an increasingly brutal and coarse society through the prism of Baltimore, whose postindustrial capitalism has decimated the working-class wage and sharply divided the haves and have-nots. The city’s bloated bureaucracies sustain the inequality. The absence of a decent public-school education or meaningful political reform leaves an unskilled underclass trapped between a rampant illegal drug economy and a vicious “war on drugs.” (p. 24) My main purpose in this article is to introduce season four of The Wire—the “education” season—to readers who have either never seen any of the series, or who have seen some of it but James Trier is an not season four. Specifically, I will attempt to show associate professor in the that season four holds great pedagogical potential for School of Education at academics in education.1 First, though, I will present the University of North examples of the critical acclaim that The Wire received Carolina at Chapel throughout its run, and I will introduce the backgrounds Hill, Chapel Hill, North of the creators and main writers of the series, David Carolina.

It is a coordinated effort as the seller hawks his product, one or two of the crew stand lookout for the police or the occasional robber, and another goes to the stash--the hidden place where the dope is kept--and gets the buyer his drug of choice.

Its first scene shows its director Charles S. Dutton standing against a wall in Western Baltimore talking about the prevalence of open air drug markets across major cities in America. This is, he tells us, “the information center of the neighborhood” but also “the place of death, of addiction or the suddenness of gunshots.” In Dutton’s words, The Corner is a story about “the men, women, and children living in the midst of the drug trade” whose “voices are too rarely heard” (episode one). By presenting this miniseries as a counter narrative to a media culture that has its focus elsewhere, the show offers its raison d’être in its examination of a group of marginalized people and the circumstances under which they live.

Our legacy runs deep – infused with the spirit of hospitality, accented by the flavors of history, and framed by inspiring events. We’ve delighted our guests with excellent service and memorable food and drink for over 215 years in a unique atmosphere found nowhere else. OUR RESTAURANT Today, the Golden Lamb restaurant is a year-round dining destination for the region and is known for using only high-quality, fresh ingredients, sourced from local farms and providers whenever possible. Today, the Golden Lamb’s 350-acre farm hosts rows of vegetables, herbs and melons; a field of popcorn; several head of cattle; a berry patch and even beehives, which directly inspire dishes from our farm to your table. Golden Lamb Media Kit Chef Nick Roudebush’s culinary team takes pride in preparing each dish from scratch, including the classics enjoyed by generations of Golden Lamb guests – like our famous golden fried chicken, roasted turkey breast and hickory roasted prime rib. Chef’s team also crafts unique seasonal menus that celebrate ingredients harvested from the Golden Lamb farm throughout the year. These special menus include our fall Bounty of the Harvest menu, and holiday offerings celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas.

THE ANNOTATED WATCHMEN 1 Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Chapter 12 THE ANNOTATED WATCHMEN by Doug Atkinson Watchmen is a trademark of DC Comics Inc., copyright 1995. These annotations copyright 1995 by Doug Atkinson. They may be freely copied and distributed, provided the text is not altered. INTRODUCTION The Annotated Watchmen was written for several reasons. The series is packed with detail, more so than almost any other, and much of that detail is easily missed. Much of the background of the world is not given straight out, but has to be inferred. There are several ongoing motifs that are worth spotting. My goal in annotating the series is to highlight and explain all these points. by Doug Atkinson 2 The Annotations are intended for the secondtime reader, someone who's read through once, knows the basic plot, but missed a lot of the detail and wants to find it. If you are reading them along with your first reading of the series, you may find that it spoils some of the surprise. Caveat lector. (I have removed most of the blatant spoilers from earlier editions.) A few conventions are worth explaining. The reason I quote newspaper headlines and signs is that some of them are hard to read, and I'm trying to save eyestrain on the reader's part. Although some of the headlines have text larger than the dialogue, I decided to be consistent and quote them all. References such as 4:12:2 are to issue:page:panel (so the example would refer to issue 4, page 12, panel 2).
