The Long Island, New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) is the local component of the national AIA, a professional organization for architects. Among the many activities the organization is involved with each year is the ARCHI Awards, a program initiated to provide professional and public recognition of projects built on Long Island as well as projects designed by Long Island architects, but built elsewhere. The program was established by the Long Island Association of Commerce and Industry in 1965, at which time submissions were requested from owners rather than architects. In 1967, the Long Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects began its involvement in the program. As the criteria for submissions improved, architects were motivated to submit entries. The awards gained prominence and the Long Island community began to recognize and understand the impact of quality architecture on their environment. From the inception of the program up until the present time, hundreds of projects—and the architects who designed them—have been honored with ARCHI awards. The ―ARCHI‖ was designed specifically for the 1970 Annual Long Island Association Architectural Awards Program. The name was taken from the Greek work Architekton, which means ―Chief or Master Builder.‖ The award is 13‖ high, incorporates a T-square, arch and a three-sided face representing the past, present and future. The collection, which spans the years 1990-1996, is comprised of ARCHI Awards entry submission materials—including project descriptions, plan renderings (facsimiles), photographs, and slides; printed materials, including awards programs, information sheets, description and philosophy statements, flyers, and news clippings; and videotapes. While the printed materials and photographs mainly concern the award winners and honorees, the majority of entrants from 1990-1995 are represented in the collection of slides. Noteworthy among the collection is the last entry submission of noted architect and AIA fellow Norman Jaffe, who drowned off a beach in Bridgehampton, N.Y., in 1993. The entry, made just months before his death, was for a residential project in Southampton, N.Y. Note: Hofstra University’s Long Island Studies Institute was at one time a sponsor of the ARCHI Awards (Sources: 1994 and 1995 ARCHI Awards programs.) Arrangement: chronological by year.
