Page 1 Website:http://www.whitlockfamilyassociation.com Another issue of the Newsletter with details of the latest break through in our research. The discovery of proof of a connection we have sought for more that forty years! The article on Colonel Bulstrode Liddiard Whitelocke starts with his Will of 1822 which names his only son Robert Heriot Whitelocke who, in 1860 published the Memoirs Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675). We have known for years that Robert’s father was Bulstrode and that Bulstrode had a brother John and that they were likely part of the WHITLOCK02H family but the place they showed on this family had never made sense as the dates did not fit and there were several generations missing between the brothers Bulstrode and John and the person shown as their father. The article details how we found proof Colonel Bulstrode Whitelocke was the brother of General John Whitelocke (1758-1833) and they were both sons of John Whitelocke and Sarah Liddiard. News travels fast and I heard from several descendants happy with finally having a clear and proven line of descent from John Whitloke and Agnes delaBeche. While on the theme of Bulstrode Whitlocks, I included the 1732 Will of Colonel Whitelocke’s great uncle Bulstrode Whitelocke (1678-1737) as the Colonel’s father John Whitelocke was one of the executors and legatees named in this Will.

I recently came across the Freedom of Admission Papers 1681-1925 on Ancestry. These relate to status as a Freemen of and in most cases these records are the original London apprenticeship records. I have included articles in this issue on how useful these documents can be in connecting London families together. (R4106) See articles on Robert Whitlock, Apprentice 1768 and Using London Guild Records.

One of the unusual items I received recently from John Phillips is the Parliamentary debates in 1822 on Amendments to the Marriage Act. One of the cases mentioned as a reason for the required amendments is the annulment of the marriage of Harriet Whitelocke and Thomas Stangeways Horner in 1799 due to his wife being under age at the time of their marriage in 1796 and because she was illegitimate it was deemed “parental” consent had not been given as only her natural mother had given consent. Harriet’s father had acknowledged her in his 1787 Will and left her a portion of his estate in the care of her mother as his executor but no guardian was ever legally appointed. (R4104) Until the Marriage Act was amended illegitimate minors could get married with their mother’s permission but the law did not recognize the mother’s permission unless the child’s legal guardian also consented. This loophole in the Marriage Act allowed many husbands to annul their marriages to an illegitimate minor. Harriet was a sister to the above Col. Bulstrode Whitelocke and his brother General John Whitelocke.

I came across an item on familypedia.com relating to the ancestors of American President Bush. President Bush is a three time Whitlock descendant, twice through his mother Barbara Pierce and once through his father President George Bush. His parents were distant cousins to each other. Barbara (Pierce) Bush descends from both Hannah Whitlock who married Joseph Baldwin (WHITLOCK31) and Rose Whitlock who married Abraham Parker (WHITLOCK24). Barbara’s husband President George Bush also descends from Rose Whitlock who married Abraham Parker through the same Pierce family.

Our Whitlock DNA project continues to yield interesting information. We received results from a distant Whitelock cousin of mine that matched the previous two results and confirmed the WHITLOCK01 family’s Norse ancestry. Judith Wilson wrote recently that her part of the family has done several autosomal DNA tests as there is no male Whitlocks available in the WHITLOCK37 family to test. Several of these tests show connections to descendants of John & Grizel (Coleman) Whitlock of the WHITLOCK33 family. This was expected as Francis Whitlock who heads the WHITLOCK37 family is very likely connected to the same Goochland Co., Virginia Whitlocks. After returning home I took advantage of Family Tree DNA’s Summer Sale and sent for my Family Finder DNA test kit. I still only have the one match for YDNA. Our trip to Little Rock, Arkansas and Springfield, Missouri was very enjoyable and it was great to see family and friends all across the country. Unfortunately the visit to the Mt. Comfort Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri only confirmed that Mary (Ponsonbay) Whitlock (1774-1843)’s gravestone is so badly worn that the only word readable is “Whitlock”. I could make out a couple of other letters but that was it. Hopefully somewhere in the church records or archives is a transcription from a time before 173 years of weather took its toll. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and that you find this issue of the Newsletter of interest.

Lyford W H. Goden

On 7th October 1826 Administration with the Will annexed of the Goods of Bulstrode Whitelocke late of the City of Winchester Esquire deceased was granted to Frances Whitelocke Widow the Relict and the Residuary Legatee for life (as to one Moiety of the personal Estate and Effects) being first sworn duly to Administer James Lampard and William Jacob the Executors thereof as also Letters of Administration with the same aim over of the Goods of the said deceased ------

Bulstrode’s parents were JohnWhitelocke and Sarah Liddiard. In his very lengthy twelve page Will John Whitelocke states: “whereas Sarah Liddiard late of Hungerford in the county of Berks Singlewoman The daughter of Thomas Liddiard also late of Hungerford aforesaid Maltster deceased by Ann his Wife hath lived and resided with me for some years past and doth now live with me of whose Body Eight Children have been born who are now living vizt four sons and four daughters namely John Bulstrode James William Charlotte Elizabeth Catherine and Harriot Whitelocke”. John then lists the birth details each of the children.

“The second son Bulstrode was also born in the said parish of Chilton Foliott on or about the third day of November One thousand Seven hundred and Sixty and was there Baptized by the Name of Bulstrode and is now called Bulstrode Whitlocke”

John Whitelocke further states in his Will that as he has spent considerable sums of money to further the careers of his two eldest sons, John Brown Whitlocke and Bulstrode, including purchasing commissions for them in the Army, they therefore would not have any further benefit from his estate. Bulstrode had joined the army May 2,1776 age 15 and his brother John two years later in 1778.

John Whitelocke became General John Whitelocke and is noteworthy for being cashiered for his actions in Argentina in 1807. His brother Bulstrode’s career is the subject of this article.

On October 12, 1787 recruiting began for a new regiment raised by the Honourable East India Company to counter the threat of French military intervention in India. On November 1 1787 shortly after his father’s death, Bulstrode was appointed to 77th Foot regiment after being a Captain in the 17th Foot regiment for five years. The 77th Foot was sent to India in 1788 and Bulstrode served in Seringapatam, India was still there in 1797 where it was recorded he was the senior captain until August 1st, 1797 when he returned to Europe and Sir James Dunlop took command.

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.35 No.3 Sep 2016 Page 4

In 1803 The Gazette shows Bulstrode Whitelocke was made a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 77th Foot regiment.

On February 10, 1807 Colonel Whitelocke is shown sailing from Bombay with the headquarters of the regiment and over the next month gathering the fleet of Indiamen carrying the rest of the regiment to sail for leaving on March 25. On September 14 they arrived at Greenhithe after being away from England for nineteen and a half years and took up quarters in Chatham Barracks in Kent.

In 1809 Col. Bulstrode Whitelocke received leave to retire from service while in Winchester, Hampshire and command of the regiment passed to Lieutenant-Colonel J. Maddison. While still living in Winchester his son Robert Heriot Whitelocke was born and his baptism May 7,1809 was registered at St. Thomas, Winchester. The name of the mother is not given in this record. His son Robert became Professor Royal at Wurtemberg, Germany and in 1860 published the Memoirs of his gggggrandfather Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675)

On November 28, 1822 Bulstrode Whitelocke made his Will and mentions his wife Frances and his son Robert Heriot Whitelocke. The Colonel was buried Apr.25,1826 St. Thomas, Winchester.

This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK02H chart.

Bulstrode Whitelocke was born in 1678 the son of Samuel Whitelock (1651-1690) and Elizabeth Gough who were married at Hurstborne Tarrant, Hampshire December 27,1671. He does not appear to have ever married and his 1732 Will leaves his estate to nieces and nephews, the children of his brother Samuel Whitelocke (1673-1743). His eldest nephew John Whitelocke (d.1787) is one of his executors and receives a separate and different legacy than his siblings.. This is the John Whitelocke who lived with Sarah Liddiard and whose Will lists the eight children they had together. See his son, Bulstrode Liddiard Whitelocke’s 1822 Will on page 2 in this issue. This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK02H chart.

USING LONDON GUILD RECORDS Some of the hardest families to link together are the old London, England ones. In December 2012 I wrote an article about Alice Whitlock’s 1616 Will showing how the Goldsmiths Guild records allowed us to connect five generations of a London family together. I have recently come across the Freedom of Admission Papers 1681-1925 on Ancestry that are based on the London Guild records.

The Guilds were a ancient way of ensuring tradesmen were adequately trained in their profession using an apprenticeship system. Once a tradesman completed his apprenticeship he could apply to be made a Freeman of his Guild and was able to trade in his own right. They were no longer feudally owned by any Master and were now free men. This status also allowed members to apply to the City of London to be made “Free of the City of London." This meant he and his sons did not have to pay trade taxes and shared in the profits of his borough. Sons of Freemen could apply for status by patrimony because their father’s were Freemen. This status is still available today and is also given as an honour. In 2000 Maisie Whitelock was made “Free of the City of London” as mayor of the London borough of Havering. Maisie is a member of the WHITLOCK01 family.

The genealogical significance of these guild records is in the father and son relationships they detail. Apprenticeship records show the name and occupation of the apprentice’s father and tell you what career was being followed. Patrimony grants give the name of the father, the date the father became a Freeman and of which guild, the date of the applicant’s birth and the date patrimony was granted. They also often give the parish of residence of the applicant.

A caution, while a person may belong to the particular guild, it does not mean that is their profession and they may be involved in a different type of trade. A member of the Fishmongers Guild may be in trade as a brushmaker or a cooper.

William Whitelock (1801-1873) was a Goldsmith and Jeweler of 46 Northampton St. Clerkenwell for many years. On December 7,1826 William was made free by right of his father John Whitelock who was a member of the Fishmongers’ Guild. John’s membership is noted in Book C and dated August 2,1791. As William had to be born after the date of his father’s membership, it was shown William was born in 1801. At the top of the document is written “Holborn”. William was baptisted at St. Andrew’s Holborn October 8, 1801. [R4106S]

The records show William’s father, John Whitelock, was apprenticed March 17,1780 to George Warner Citizen and Fishmonger ( by Trade Brushmaker) of Dean Street, near Tooley Street, Southwark for a term of seven years. As noted above his membership in the Fishmongers’ Guild was recorded in 1791. John Whitelock was shown as the son of William Whitelock of Ware, Hertford, deceased.

John Whitelock’s father, William Whitelock, was likely formerly of the parish of St. Andrews, Holborn but by 1755 was an officer of the Excise at Ware in Hertfordshire. The family was likely related to Thomas Sawtell, Tallow Chandler guild member as William’s son Thomas was apprenticed to Thomas Sawtell July 24,1754 and in 1755 William refers to his daughter Elizabeth’s uncle and aunt Sawtell in a letter written to Elizabeth at the time of her marriage of George Haines at St. Andrews Holborn September 8,1755.

This kind of detail interconnecting these London families is crucial to sorting out family ties. Many of these families have been in our records since the 1960's and I am only now being able to connect them together. I have extracted images of all these records and have catalogued and cross referenced them all. Several have provided clues to where these families lived before they came to London in the 1600's and 1700's. I have also done an article for this issue on Robert Whitlock (1752-1833) showing how the information on his apprentice documents confirms details shown on the WHITLOCK53 chart and provides details about his father John Whitlock

(On back of document ELJL/1133/76) -----

The information shown above is attached to Robert’s apprenticeship document. This Robert Whitlock was born in Stepney, London and baptized October 9, 1752 at St. George in the East, Old Gravel Lane, Stepney. His apprenticeship Indenture dated March 31,1767 shows he was the son of John Whitlock late of the Parish of Saint John Wapping in the County of Middlesex Tallow Chandler deceased. His apprenticeship was for seven years and cost “ fifty pounds of lawfull British Money” a huge sum in 1767.

On the back of the Indenture it is noted: “26th January 1768 Turned over to Joseph Harriss Citizen and Joyner of London to serve the remainder of his Term J Fisher” “ Afterwards/to wit/ on 27th Jan’y 1768 the within named Apprentice by virtue of the Judg’nt hereunto annexed was Turned over to Joseph Harris of the same....” “1st March 1791 This day made free And’re Touse: Upper Warden”“ 31 March 1767 No 10/ Duty pd One Pound 5s £1.5.0 JD R" “ELJL/1133/75"

By 1778 Robert Whitlock had completed his apprenticeship as a Joyner and established a coachbuilding business. Robert Whitlock married Charlotte Waistcoat April 18,1780 Ealing, Middlesex and they had several children including Henry Whitlock. Robert is shown in Holden’s Trienial Directory 1805-1807 as a Coach and Harness maker living in Turnham Green. He died in Chiswick and was buried there August 1,1833. His son Henry took over his father’s business and by 1851 there was a coach building factory in Chiswick. In the 1870 and 1880s the term “By Appointment to the Royal Family” showed in their advertising.

In 1903 the first Whitlock Car appeared and by this time the Whitlock family was no longer involved. Whitlock Motors manufactured chassis until the company was closed in 1979.

This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK53 chart. We now know Robert’s father, John Whitlock, was a member of the Tallow Chandler’s Guild. Hopefully we will uncover his apprentice record and further details about his father John Whitlock.

MAX ANTONY WHITLOCK (1993- ) GYMNAST Whitlock Family Association members have had their eye on Max Whitlock since at least 2009 when Eric Whitlock of Wales sent in the first media references to the potential this athlete was showing.

Max was born January 13, 1993 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire and started gymnastics at age seven. In 2003 at age ten Max was competing and won a 1st overall and 1st on 6 pieces at the Pegasus open that year in Kent. In 2009 he was chosen to be part of the Great Britain artistic gymnastic team and went to , Australia for the 5th Australian Youth Olympic Festival. These sixteen year olds shocked the gymnastic world by winning gold, silver and bronze in the team all round and then gold in three individual categories including Max Whitlock on the pommel horse.

In 2010 the Commonwealth Games were held in Delhi, India and Max Whitlock was there winning silvers in the team all round and pommel horse and a bronze in horizontal bar.

At the London Prepares Olympic test event for the 2012 London Olympic Games Max aced the event giving six clean routines in all six events getting his highest score on the pommel horse and helping his team qualify for the Games. At the 2012 Games he brought home two bronze medals, one for the team and one for pommel horse.

In 2015 Max was at the 2105 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow and he won gold on the pommel horse becoming the first British man to ever win a World Championship gold medal.

The stage was set for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Max continued to train and using social media he streamed some his workouts for his growing number of fans. In Jul 2016 he qualified for the British Olympic team. Max’s first medal at the 2016 Games was a bronze in the all round event and then on day 9 Max wowed the world besting Japan’s Kenzo Shirai on the floor event for the gold and then two hours later winning gold on the pommel horse beating his teammate Louis Smith. Max’s parents Brian & Madeleine Whitlock flew from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire to Rio and were in the stands cheering on their son.

The last time the British had won two gold medals in a single day was in 1932 at the Los Angeles Olympics when Hugh “Jumbo” Edwards won two rowing golds, the coxless pairs and the fours within an hour.

Max was also given the honour of being first off the plane with the British team arrived back in London for their hero’s welcome home. Max was met by his fiancé Leah Hickton. There were engaged last June and plans for their wedding were put on hold until after the Rio games. We will be following this young man as he enjoys his celebrity status and hopefully we will uncover details showing how Max and his father Brian K. Whitlock fit into the Whitlock clan.
