Page 1 Website:http://www.whitlockfamilyassociation.com Another issue of the Newsletter with details of the latest break through in our research. The discovery of proof of a connection we have sought for more that forty years! The article on Colonel Bulstrode Liddiard Whitelocke starts with his Will of 1822 which names his only son Robert Heriot Whitelocke who, in 1860 published the Memoirs Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675). We have known for years that Robert’s father was Bulstrode and that Bulstrode had a brother John and that they were likely part of the WHITLOCK02H family but the place they showed on this family had never made sense as the dates did not fit and there were several generations missing between the brothers Bulstrode and John and the person shown as their father. The article details how we found proof Colonel Bulstrode Whitelocke was the brother of General John Whitelocke (1758-1833) and they were both sons of John Whitelocke and Sarah Liddiard. News travels fast and I heard from several descendants happy with finally having a clear and proven line of descent from John Whitloke and Agnes delaBeche. While on the theme of Bulstrode Whitlocks, I included the 1732 Will of Colonel Whitelocke’s great uncle Bulstrode Whitelocke (1678-1737) as the Colonel’s father John Whitelocke was one of the executors and legatees named in this Will. I recently came across the Freedom of Admission Papers 1681-1925 on Ancestry. These relate to status as a Freemen of London and in most cases these records are the original London apprenticeship records. I have included articles in this issue on how useful these documents can be in connecting London families together. (R4106) See articles on Robert Whitlock, Apprentice 1768 and Using London Guild Records. One of the unusual items I received recently from John Phillips is the Parliamentary debates in 1822 on Amendments to the Marriage Act. One of the cases mentioned as a reason for the required amendments is the annulment of the marriage of Harriet Whitelocke and Thomas Stangeways Horner in 1799 due to his wife being under age at the time of their marriage in 1796 and because she was illegitimate it was deemed “parental” consent had not been given as only her natural mother had given consent. Harriet’s father had acknowledged her in his 1787 Will and left her a portion of his estate in the care of her mother as his executor but no guardian was ever legally appointed. (R4104) Until the Marriage Act was amended illegitimate minors could get married with their mother’s permission but the law did not recognize the mother’s permission unless the child’s legal guardian also consented. This loophole in the Marriage Act allowed many husbands to annul their marriages to an illegitimate minor. Harriet was a sister to the above Col. Bulstrode Whitelocke and his brother General John Whitelocke. I came across an item on familypedia.com relating to the ancestors of American President George Walker Bush. President Bush is a three time Whitlock descendant, twice through his mother Barbara Pierce and once through his father President George Bush. His parents were distant cousins to each other. Barbara (Pierce) Bush descends from both Hannah Whitlock who married Joseph Baldwin (WHITLOCK31) and Rose Whitlock who married Abraham Parker (WHITLOCK24). Barbara’s husband President George Bush also descends from Rose Whitlock who married Abraham Parker through the same Pierce family. Our Whitlock DNA project continues to yield interesting information. We received results from a distant Whitelock cousin of mine that matched the previous two results and confirmed the WHITLOCK01 family’s Norse ancestry. Judith Wilson wrote recently that her part of the family has done several autosomal DNA tests as there is no male Whitlocks available in the WHITLOCK37 family to test. Several of these tests show connections to descendants of John & Grizel (Coleman) Whitlock of the WHITLOCK33 family. This was expected as Francis Whitlock who heads the WHITLOCK37 family is very likely connected to the same Goochland Co., Virginia Whitlocks. After returning home I took advantage of Family Tree DNA’s Summer Sale and sent for my Family Finder DNA test kit. I still only have the one match for YDNA. Our trip to Little Rock, Arkansas and Springfield, Missouri was very enjoyable and it was great to see family and friends all across the country. Unfortunately the visit to the Mt. Comfort Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri only confirmed that Mary (Ponsonbay) Whitlock (1774-1843)’s gravestone is so badly worn that the only word readable is “Whitlock”. I could make out a couple of other letters but that was it. Hopefully somewhere in the church records or archives is a transcription from a time before 173 years of weather took its toll. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and that you find this issue of the Newsletter of interest. Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.35 No.3 Sep 2016 Page 2 MISCELLANEOUS X7858 2 Sallie N.
