Οι σύγχρονες επιστημονικές μέθοδοι παρέχουν εξαιρετικές δυνατότητες μελέτης των φυτών. Όλα αυτά βέβαια στα πλαίσια του πρακτικά εφικτού, καθώς η απεραντοσύνη, ποικιλομορφία και μεταβλητότητα του φυτικού κόσμου είναι αδύνατο να χωρέσουν οπουδήποτε, παρά μόνο συνεχίζουν να γοητεύουν τους ερευνητές και να θέτουν νέες προκλήσεις. Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία εκπονήθηκε στα πλαίσια του μεταπτυχιακού προγράμματος σπουδών της Σχολής Δασολογίας και Φυσικού Περιβάλλοντος του Αριστοτελείου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης, τη χρονική περίοδο 2010-2014. Θερμά ευχαριστώ την κ. Ελευθεριάδου Ελένη, Αναπληρώτρια Καθηγήτρια, επιβλέπουσα της παρούσας εργασίας. Το γένος Quercus Γενικά Το γένος Quercus ανήκει στην οικογένεια Fagaceae και στην τάξη Fagales. Τα είδη του γένους εμφανίζονται κυρίως στη βόρεια εύκρατη ζώνη. Αριθμεί περί τα 531 είδη, κυρίως στο Β Ημισφαίριο (Govaerts & Frodin 1998), με την πλειονότητα αυτών στη Βόρεια Αμερική, ενώ ένας μεγάλος αριθμός εντοπίζεται στην Ευρώπη, στην παραμεσόγεια περιοχή και στη δυτική και ανατολική Ασία. Στη Νότια Αμερική εμφανίζονται μόνον στις Άνδεις της Κολομβίας. Η σχετικά μικρή εμφάνισή τους στις τροπικές περιοχές περιορίζεται στα ψηλά βουνά. Εμφανίζονται σε υπερθαλάσσιο ύψος που κυμαίνεται από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας μέχρι 4.000 m στα Ιμαλάϊα και προτιμούν σχετικά πλούσια εδάφη, όχι πολύ αμμώδη ή πολύ ξερά (Hora 1981). Περιλαμβάνει είδη μεγάλης οικονομικής και όχι μόνο αξίας, είδη που μπορούν να θεωρηθούν απόλυτα συνυφασμένα με την ανθρώπινη εξέλιξη. Παρέχουν το καλύτερο ξύλο από άποψη δύναμης και αντοχής. Δεν είναι εύκολο να διακρίνει κανείς τις διαφορές στα εμπορικά ξύλα δρυός. Μια διάκριση γίνεται μεταξύ λευκών (π.χ. Q. alba, Q. macrocarpa, Q. robur, Q. sessiliflora) και κόκκινων δρυών (π.χ. Q. rubra, Q. velutina, Q. palustris) με τις πρώτες να είναι κάπως πιο σκληρές και πιο ανθεκτικές. Και οι δύο ομάδες ειδών χρησιμοποιούνται για τους ίδιους σκοπούς: έπιπλα, γέφυρες, πλοία, επενδύσεις τοίχων – δαπέδων και πολλά άλλα είδη κατασκευών. Η Q. virginiana θεωρείται ότι έχει το πιο ανθεκτικό ξύλο από όλα τα είδη δρυός. Από το φλοιό της Q. suber λαμβάνεται ο φελλός, ενώ κάποιες δρύες θεωρούνται βαφικές. Οι καρποί τους (βελανίδια) θεωρούνται σημαντικοί στη χοιροτροφία. Επιπλέον, πολλές από αυτές χρησιμοποιούνται για καλλωπιστικούς σκοπούς, λόγω κυρίως των εξαιρετικών φθινοπωρινών χρωματισμών του φυλλώματός τους. Δικαίως λοιπόν οι δρύες αποτιμώνται ως εκ των πολυτιμότερων ειδών παγκοσμίως (Hora 1981). Σε πολλούς μεγάλους πολιτισμούς της Ευρώπης η δρυς χαίρει μεγάλης εκτίμησης. Για τους Έλληνες, τους Ρωμαίους, τους Κέλτες, τους Σλάβους, τους Τεύτονες ήταν η σημαντικότερη από τα τιμώμενα δέντρα και σε κάθε περίπτωση σχετίζονταν με τον υπέρτατο θεό του πάνθεόν τους, όπως ο Δίας για τους Έλληνες. The view of the beach far below was beautiful, as it must have been when the town was still inhabited. The town was destroyed in 167 BCE by a Roman army, along with most of the other towns in the vicinity, all allied with Rome’s enemy, Macedonia. The Kosovo Assembly officially approved the NBSAP 2011 – 2020 on 7 October 2011.     Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Master Site Plan PHASING AND IMPLEMENTATION he following pages outline phasing recommendations for the KruckebergT Botanic Garden that seem desirable to address the needs, vision, and requirements of a private garden’s evolution into the publc domain. With the transfer of this property from a private residence to a commercial public entity, new sets of codes, restrictions, and opportunities come into play. These deal with public safety, health, and well-being and ensure that equal opportunities are afforded to all. Within a limited budget, Phase 1 responds to these immediate needs by providing on-site public parking to reduce impacts to the surrounding residential community, adding much needed public restrooms, and creating a permanent and separate service access road and staff parking area. Phase 2 focuses on siting an interpretive switchback boardwalk trail that connects the upper and lower gardens in an aesthetic ADA-compliant manner. It is also envi- sioned that an ADA-compliant loop path would be routed through the lower garden. While it would be optimal to build the environmental learning center in Phase 2, it is recognized that lack of funding may require deferment to a later phase. Further development of future phases depends on many factors, most importantly securing funding and the commitment of the City, Foundation, and public to sup- port and encourage new work to proceed. In the end, this alone will determine how quickly Garden projects are completed and the Garden vision, as outlined in this report, is realized. This is a modest plan as represented by the development costs associated with each phase in 2010 dollars.

Moro 39, San Giovanni Rotondo, FG, Italy ABSTRACT: The name Quercus pubescens s.l. encompasses a complex of deciduous oak taxa with mainly southeast- European distribution and a large ecological niche. As the easternmost region of Italy, Apulia is rather isolated from a geographical and physiographical viewpoint and counts the highest number of oak species (10). In the taxonomic and phytosociological literature, the occurrence of several species belonging to the Quercus pubescens collective group is reported for this region. In order to verify if different sets of morphological characters are associated with different taxa, 24 populations of Quercus pubescens s.l. located in different ecological-geographical areas of Apulia were sampled. A total of 367 trees, 4254 leaves and 1120 fruits were collected and morphologically analysed. Overall, 25 morphological characters of oak leaves and fruits were statistically treated using both univariate and multivariate analysis. Nested ANOVA showed that leaves collected from a single tree exhibited a degree of morphological variability higher than that observed when comparing leaves coming from different trees of the same population and from different trees of different populations as well.

    Willdenowia 36 – 2006 257 PANAYIOTIS TRIGAS & GREGORIS IATROU The local endemic flora of Evvia (W Aegean, Greece) Abstract Trigas, P. & Iatrou, G.: The local endemic flora of Evvia (W Aegean, Greece). – Willdenowia 36 (Spe- cial Issue): 257-270. – ISSN 0511-9618; © 2006 BGBM Berlin-Dahlem. doi:10.3372/wi.36.36121 (available via http://dx.doi.org/) The local endemic element in the flora of the W Aegean island of Evvia comprises 39 taxa (2.1 % of an estimated total of 1833 taxa). The three centres of endemism on the island are the ophiolitic areas of N Evvia, Mt Dirphis in central Evvia and Mt Ochi and the Cape Kafireas area in S Evvia. The majority of the endemic taxa inhabit limestone and ophiolitic habitats. Schizoendemics (80.8 %) form the largest category, followed by apoendemics (11.5 %) and palaeoendemics (7.7 %). Taxonomical comments on selected taxa are provided. The chromosome number of ten taxa is given for the first time. Key words: island biogeography, taxonomy, vascular plants, serpentine, chromosome numbers. Introduction The Aegean area is an important centre of Mediterranean plant endemism, floristically pioneered by Rechinger (1943, 1944, 1949). In the W Aegean, the flora of the island of Evvia was studied in detail (Rechinger 1961, partly based on Phitos 1960).
