Approaching participation as a complex of values rather that a particular form of decision making or organizational structure, this dissertation analyzes a range of contemporary practices that embrace participation as an ideal. Such practices include social movements, open conferencing events in the knowledge and IT industries, and social practice art. Through these sites I seek to clarify the way that participation operates in terms of what Slavoj Žižek refers to as a mode of “enjoyment.” While in all cases participation is presented as a path towards progress or emancipation, this widespread assumption has led to the restructuring of social relations in a fashion that is not incompatible with capitalist exploitation. The dissertation explores the paradox that exploitation presents to social actors who place their hopes in participation as a primary principle in their vision of social transformation. I argue that our attachment to participatory values is an impasse to radical political organization and our capacity to build democratic power. In contrast to the conflation of participation with democracy in the radical imagination, I argue that participation today operates as a complex of values that has become uncoupled from direct democratic practices. The “participatory complex,” as I define it, includes: a valuation of activity over passivity; the privileging of procedure or structure over ends; a desire for immediacy and anti-representational attitudes; the privileging of face-to-face encounters or bodily co-presence; an orientation towards inclusiveness and pluralism; a will to consensus; and discourses of empowerment through personalization. iv RÉSUMÉ La participation détient une fonction idéologique dans le contexte des réseaux sociaux numériques. Cette thèse étudie la participation comme un complexe de valeurs et non comme une façon de prendre des décisions ou comme une structure organisationnelle. Ainsi, je m’emploie à analyser une série de pratiques contemporaines qui prônent une vision idéalisée de la participation. Parmi les pratiques qui idéalisent la participation on peut compter : les mouvements sociaux, les conférences ouvertes au public dans les industries du savoir et des nouvelles technologies (TIC) ainsi que l’art engagé. L’étude des diverses conceptions que l’on se fait de la participation au sein de ces domaines permet d’observer comment la participation opère selon les modalités de ce que Slavoj Žižek appelle la « jouissance ». Si dans tous ces cas de figure la participation représente le progrès et l’émancipation, une telle conception de la participation contribue néanmoins à une restructuration des relations sociales qui n’est pas sans rappeler la logique d’exploitation du capitalisme. Cette thèse examine le paradoxe que pose l’exploitation pour les acteurs sociaux qui avaient misé sur la participation en tant que principe fondateur du changement social qu’ils envisageaient. Je soutiens que notre attachement aux valeurs participatives représente une impasse pour la constitution de mouvements politiques radicaux et entrave notre capacité de bâtir un pouvoir démocratique. A l’opposé de l’imaginaire radical qui présuppose un amalgame entre participation et démocratie, j’affirme qu’aujourd’hui la participation opère selon un complexe de valeurs qui sont détachées des pratiques démocratiques directes. Ce que j’ai nommé « complexe de participation » comprend : une valorisation de l’activité au détriment de la passivité ; un intérêt marqué pour les procédures ou les structures plutôt que pour les fins ; un désir d’immédiateté et l’adoption d’une posture non- représentationnelle ; une valorisation du face-à-face et de la co-présence physique ; un v mouvement vers l’inclusion et le pluralisme ; une volonté d’établir des consensus ; l’établissement de discours d’émancipation fondés sur le principe de la personalisation. vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation was made possible by the support of many colleagues, friends, and mentors who over the years have contributed in numerous ways to my thinking, to my confidence and to my general well-being. This change is far more profound than the mere numerical advance of the calendar. Our secular, dualistic, reductionist view of the world -- our Mechanistic Worldview, also known as the Newtonian or Cartesian worldview -- is showing signs of old age. After 400 years of guiding our inquiry and actions, after many successes and a growing number of failures, the Mechanistic Worldview is increasingly under attack on many fronts: philosophically, ethically, spiritually, even from within itself, from the scientific and technological perspective. Our intellectual and social lives have become vastly more complicated than in past generations. Social and environmental problems are rapidly mounting, and depression and apathy seem increasingly prevalent. Unfortunately, the Mechanistic Worldview -- the source of our values, the justification for our actions, the framework upon which all our ideas are laid out -- seems less and less able to cope, and less able to provide satisfactory resolution. The time has come to deeply reexamine our present worldview, and, to the greatest degree possible, to creatively transcend it. Even though the Zeitgeist affects us all, the task of articulating a new worldview falls primarily to those philosophically-inclined thinkers of all disciplines1. Traditionally the greatest burden for this task has fallen upon the philosophers proper. Philosophers are, after all, in the business of examining things deeply, of understanding the root causes of our intellectual and emotional deficiencies, and of charting new paths for society.

The two SDS founders concluded, “Perhaps the most important legacy of the Port Huron Statement is the fact that it introduced the concept of participatory democracy to popular discourse and practice.” The concept of participatory democracy encompassed values such as equality, decentralization, and consensus decision-making. It provided direction for “all those trying to create a world where each person has a voice in the decisions affecting his or her life.” [1] In this article, I suggest that Port Huron’s concept of participatory democracy included some ideas that were potentially antithetical to democracy and that potential, unfortunately, is being fulfilled in contemporary theories of digital democracy. The Port Huron Statement Revisited The Port Huron Statement contained two underlying themes that potentially subverted democratic equality. One was the notion that the American people were fundamentally flawed, most apparently, by their apathy. The other was that the best means to eliminate this flaw was to follow the lead of rational, deliberative activists. Both themes could be (and would be) used to justify political inequalities. Port Huron’s student-authors expressed a dim view of American citizens. The American people had closed minds. They exhibited a foolish confidence that the nation could muddle through its problems. They harbored a false sense of contentment, “a glaze above deeply felt anxieties,” arising out of loneliness, isolation, and estrangement.

This idea goes back to the beginnings of modern democratic theory and to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Social Contract. It was adopted by different socialist thinkers, later on by trade unions and, in the 1960s and 70s, by political scientists such as Carole Pateman and other promoters of participatory democracy. According to this tradition, workplace democracy is considered to be necessary for the realization of democratic ideals like individual autonomy, freedom, voice and participation in all relevant questions influencing citizens’ lives. Parts of this normative idea were realized by trade union movements and laws, especially in Western European countries. Nevertheless, workplace democracy in the sense of the above-mentioned theories remained far from becoming reality.

    Who Mobilizes? Participatory Democracy in Chávez’s Bolivarian Revolution Kirk A. Hawkins ABSTRACT This article assesses popular mobilization under the Chávez gov- ernment’s participatory initiatives in Venezuela using data from the AmericasBarometer survey of 2007. This is the first study of the so- called Bolivarian initiatives using nationally representative, individ- ual-level data. The results provide a mixed assessment. Most of the government’s programs invite participation from less active seg- ments of society, such as women, the poor, and the less educated, and participation in some programs is quite high. However, much of this participation clusters within a narrow group of activists, and a disproportionate number of participants are Chávez supporters. This partisan bias probably reflects self-screening by Venezuelans who accept Chávez’s radical populist discourse and leftist ideology, rather than vote buying or other forms of open conditionality. Thus, the Venezuelan case suggests some optimism for proponents of par- ticipatory democracy, but also the need to be more attuned to its practical political limits. uring the past decade, leftist governments with participatory dem- Docratic agendas have come to power in many Latin American coun- tries, implementing institutional reforms at the local and, increasingly, the national level. This trend has generated a scholarly literature assess- ing the nature of participation in these initiatives; that is, whether they embody effective attempts at participatory forms of democracy that mobilize and empower inactive segments of society (Goldfrank 2007; Wampler 2007a). This article advances this discussion by studying popular mobiliza- tion under the government of Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, referred to here as the Bolivarian Revolution or Chavismo.

Based on Ernesto Laclau’s conceptualization of ‘the universal’ and ‘the particular’, we show how the institutionalization of radical politics (as carried out by The Alternative) entails a move from universality towards particularity. This move, however, comes with the risk of cutting off supporters who no longer feel represented by the project. We refer to this problem as the problem of particularization. In conclusion, we use the analysis to propose a conceptual distinction between radical movements and radical parties: While the former is constituted by a potentially infinite chain of equivalent grievances, the latter is constituted by a prioritized set of differential demands. While both are important, we argue that they must remain distinct in order to preserve the universal spirit of contemporary radical politics.     International Relations and Diplomacy, July 2015, Vol. 3, No. 7, 439-447 D doi: 10.17265/2328-2134/2015.07.001 DAVID PUBLISHING Playground of Violence: Mennonites and Makhnovites in the Time of War and Revolution Mikhail Akulov The Kazakh-British Technical University, Almaty, Kazakhstan Focusing on the relationship between the German Mennonite colonists and the self-professed followers of Nestor Makhno, this paper attempts to present a view of the Revolution in which participants are seen primarily through the framework of competition, rather than through binary narrative structures of victims vs. perpetrators, bourgeoisie vs. proletariat, revolutionaries vs. counterrevolutionaries, etc.. Always with an eye at a real or an imagined opponent, the Mennonites and the avowed adherents of the fabled bat’ko ended up profoundly influencing one another, conditioning one’s moves and limiting one’s latitude as does the omnipresent other vis-a-vis the unfolding self. In that light, violence, which both sides had on their record, functioned to cement such ongoing dialects, carrying the protagonists of these turbulent times well beyond their original intentions.
