The Viking is about 78 feet long, 17 feet wide, and 6.5 feet high, from the bottom of the keel to the gunwale. Its oak planks are fastened together with thousands of iron rivets. At sea, the Viking averaged 10 knots and the hull was observed to flex with the waves. The Viking was built at Christen Christensen's Framnes Shipyard in Sandefjord, Norway in 1892-93. It was copied after the ancient Viking ship Gokstad. Excavated in 1880, the Gokstad had been called the most beautiful ship ever built. In 1893, the Viking sailed from Norway to Chicago, via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes, and became one of the greatest attractions at the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago World's Fair. At the close of the Fair the Viking traveled to New Orleans. The next year, she was returned to Chicago and presented to the Field Columbian Museum. Soon, the Viking was in dry dock alongside the museum. The Federation of Norwegian Women's Societies saw her plight and began a restoration effort. After her repair and restoration, the Viking was relocated to Lincoln Park in 1920, placed under a fenced-in, wooden shelter and transferred to the care of the Commissioners of Lincoln Park, which later consolidated into the Chicago Park District. Although legal trustee of the Viking ship, the Chicago Park District set aside no funds for maintenance of the boat or its shelter. For many decades, the Norwegian-American community provided maintenance to the ship. But as the years passed, the Viking began to suffer. In 1978 the Scandinavian-American community rallied by forming The Viking Ship Restoration Committee, whose goal was to restore the Viking and find suitable permanent housing. The Committee consisted of individuals from various Scandinavian organizations. They raised funds through donations and began efforts to place the Viking ship inside the Museum of Science and Industry. Once close to success, their attempt failed. In 1993, the Chicago Park District made it known that the Viking would have to be moved from its location to make room for expansion of the Lincoln Park Zoo. The general GETTHECONNECTION.ONLINE superintendent of the Chicago Park District wrote to the Viking Ship Restoration Committee, requesting that the ship be cleaned, tarped and moved from Lincoln Park to proper storage. When the Viking Ship Restoration Committee did not respond to their letter, the general superintendent sold the ship to the American Scandinavian Council in 1994. The American Scandinavian Council assumed the obligation to display, repair and care for the ship within Chicago. The Council transported the Viking some 40-plus miles to a materials yard in West Chicago and secured it under a canopy. Two years later, the Viking was moved to Good Templar Park in Geneva, where it remains. The fabric canopy has been replaced several times. The dragon “head” and “tail” of the ship are in storage at the Museum of Science and Industry. Study by Provision Living

What’s on your bucket list? What adventure would you like to have or what place would you like to visit? Many people like to use a bucket list—or a list of experiences or achievements that they hope to accomplish while living life to the fullest. We wanted to find out more about how Americans feel about bucket lists, what’s on them, and how many people actually have one. The results were pretty revealing. After surveying 2,000 people, we found that 95 percent of them had a bucket list, 21 percent change their bucket list at least once a month and 66 percent plan on checking off an item within the next year, which proves that the bucket list isn’t just a catchphrase—it’s actually guiding the way people think about experiences and life events. Here’s more about what we found on our bucket list survey. How bucket lists get started Where does the idea for a bucket list originate? Is it something that a retired couple brings up one day before the beginning of their golden years? Is a bucket list something that you start when you’re young? Our survey reveals that a large percentage of people start their bucket list when they get to a certain age (38 percent). Other reasons for starting a bucket list include being influenced by some sort of media (12 percent),

after they went on a trip (11 percent), illness or death in the family (eight percent), a recommendation from a family member or friend (five percent), a change in relationship status (four percent), being laid off from a job (three percent) and an income change (three percent). Only four percent of survey respondents said they didn’t have a bucket list. What America’s bucket list looks like Everyone has different dreams about their lives, but what similarities do we have on our bucket list? We asked our survey participants to let us know a little more about what’s on their bucket lists by category. Without a doubt, the most popular experience on someone’s bucket list had to do with travel—and 77 percent of our survey indicated that they had some sort of travel goal on their personal lists. Following travel, many (71 percent) had financial goals on their bucket list, personal development goals (71 percent), family goals (67 percent), health goals (55 percent), hobby goals (47 percent), career goals (42 percent), spiritual development goals (40 percent) and volunteer-related goals (27 percent). The most desired specific experiences on people’s bucket lists were the following: skydiving, winning the lottery and having kids. And what about the least desired? Our survey said getting arrested, breaking a minor law and trying online dating. Travel bucket list One thing that’s clear is that Americans are itching to check places off their sight-seeing list. But where exactly do they want to go? And how many places do they want to visit? The average number of travel destinations on a bucket list is eight—a pretty demanding travel schedule for some. The top countries on people’s bucket lists were Australia, Italy,

We also asked our survey participants if they preferred to travel to these destinations with a partner or alone. About half (52 percent) said they wanted to bring a spouse or significant other on a bucket list trip and only 14 percent said they wanted to go solo. Financial bucket list When it comes to bucket list items, are people willing to put their money where the list is? From our survey, we found that the most amount of money people are willing to spend Of our Baby Boomer survey participants, 34 percent said their age on a bucket list item was an average of $3,081—with Boomers saying they would spend has limited their ability to try new life experiences, but 62 percent said $3,204 and Millennials being a little bit more frugal by saying they’d spend $2,959. they feel younger than their current age. We place our humble crosses along a stairway, beside dainty yellow And there’s something celebratory, too, as families arrive with their blossoms. Betsa Marsh photo daughters in clouds of tulle—some fresh from their christenings, some right from their weddings. One happy group poses for a cross-backdropped photo. Is it a birthday party? A job promotion? The meaning can be as individual as the inscriptions on each cross. How did it all begin? Like so much about the hill, it’s mysterious. Some say the first crosses appeared furtively in the 14th century, silently calling out for Lithuanian freedom. After peasant rebellions in 1831 and 1863, crosses popped up to honor dead freedom fighters. Resistance grew during the Soviet occupation from 1944 to 1991. The Russians bulldozed and burned the Hill in April 1961, but crosses popped back up. They repeated the clearances four more times, but nevertheless, the Hill of Crosses persisted. Today, the Hill remains free of governmental jurisdiction, so travelers from around the world bring their crosses, medals and rosaries. The monument grows organically. During our late afternoon visit, an older couple touches up the paint on a tall metallic cross, the man wiping crimson off his hands and the woman picking up nearby debris. There’s a solemnity to the work that’s lightened by the fairy bells of tinkling rosary beads and the mellow clank of medals tapping wooden crosses. When you go The Hill of Crosses, Kryzių Kalnas, is in Siauliai County, northwest Lithuania. Visit lithuania.travel/en/place/the- hill-of-crosses.
