It is the largest odonate known in China and the fourth in the world in terms of forewing length. The maximum size (based on forewing length) of Odonata is smaller in the Permian than in the Mesozoic which is probably due to competition for prey between Odonata and Pro- todonata in the Permian. The reason that the maximum size of Jurassic odonates is larger than that of their extant relatives is most probably less competition and lower predation pressure from contemporary aerial vertebrates. This leaflet illustrates 54 of the more common and distinctive moths (excluding Sphingidae) representing 13 of the families that have been recorded at the REGUA lodge. Surprisingly the lights also sometimes attract a few species of day-flying butterflies, especially hairstreaks. Chapter 4 For the Benefit of Naturalists The 1679 Raupen book was Maria Sibylla Merian’s first scientific publication, but far from her last. Tracing the history of her full body of work is useful in understanding her influence on subsequent biological inquiry and on her rep- utation as a naturalist. The first Raupen volume set the pattern for her later books, and in 1683, she published a second caterpillar book.1 Merian’s research on insects continued for almost three more decades after the appearance of the second Raupen volume, but publication of the third volume on European insects was put on hold until it was published in Dutch in 1717.2 In the interim, she researched and wrote about Neotropical insects and plants, and in 1705 she published her best known work, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium.3 In the years between the Surinam volume and her 1717 Rupsen book, the earlier German caterpillar books were translated and published in Dutch. In the 18th century, all of Merian’s books were published in a variety of editions in Dutch, Latin and French. This somewhat complex history is noteworthy, because edi- torial decisions by Merian and by publishers who controlled her material after her death had a lasting effect on how she has been perceived as a scientist. The 1683 Raupen book contained additional metamorphoses that Merian studied before moving from Nuremberg. Although this second volume was similar in format to the first caterpillar book, there are differences in how she arranged the content. As she states in the preface to the second volume, “more than a hundred transformations can be found here …,” and she tells readers that for their convenience, she has combined insects that eat the same plant into a single plate. -

ABSTRACT: This study offers a butterfly’s checklist from Felisberto Neves Ecological Park in Betim, Minas Gerais. The samplings occurred in October 2013, with a total sampling effort of 20 hours, divided into four samples, during the morning period. 66 individuals were identified in 23 species belonging to four families: Hesperiidae, Nymphalidae, Pieridae and Papilionidae. The low species richness is expected in an urban forest fragment as Felisberto Park. However, the results suggest a trend towards increasing number of species with increased sampling effort. This work also provides photographies of the recorded species that can be used as a field guide. Keywords: butterflies; biodiversity; inventory. RESUMO: Este estudo dispõe uma lista de borboletas do Parque Ecológico Felisberto Neves em Betim, Minas Gerais. As amostragens ocorreram no mês de outubro de 2013, totalizando um esforço amostral 20 horas, distribuídas em quatro coletas, no período matutino. Foram coletados 66 indivíduos, distribuídos em 23 espécies de quatro famílias: Hesperiidae, Nymphalidae, Pieridae e Papilionidae. A baixa riqueza de espécies é esperada em um fragmento de mata urbano como o Parque Felisberto. Contudo, os resultados sugerem uma tendência ao aumento da riqueza com o aumento do esforço amostral.Este trabalho também fornece fotografias de espécies registradas, sendo útil como um guia de campo. -

Still prevalent in scholarly circles in Merian’s time was the Aristotelian theory of the spontan- eous generation of insects from mud.
