Here, we present the latest results on the atmospheric structure and the dust condensation region of AGB stars based on our recent infrared spectro-interferometric observations, which represent the environment of SiO masers. We discuss, as an example, new results from simultaneous VLTI and VLBA observations of the Mira variable AGB star R Cnc, including VLTI near- and mid- infrared interferometry, as well as VLBA observations of the SiO maser emission toward this source. We present preliminary results from a monitoring campaign of high-frequency SiO maser emission toward evolved stars obtained with the APEX telescope, which also serves as a pre- cursor of ALMA images of the SiO emitting region.

Lacasse6 Received 2002 March 15; accepted 2002 July 3 ABSTRACT Nine bright O-rich Mira stars and five semiregular variable cool M giants have been observed with the Infrared and Optical Telescope Array (IOTA) interferometer in both K0 (2.15 lm) and L0 (3.8 lm) broad- band filters, in most cases at very close variability phases. All of the sample Mira stars and four of the semire- gular M giants show strong increases, from ’20% to ’100%, in measured uniform-disk (UD) diameters between the K0 and L0 bands. (A selection of hotter M stars does not show such a large increase.) There is no evidence that K0 and L0 broadband visibility measurements should be dominated by strong molecular bands, and cool expanding dust shells already detected around some of these objects are also found to be poor candi- dates for producing these large apparent diameter increases. Therefore, we propose that this must be a con- tinuum or pseudocontinuum opacity effect. Such an apparent enlargement can be reproduced using a simple two-component model consisting of a warm (1500–2000 K), extended (up to ’3 stellar radii), optically thin ( ’ 0:5) layer located above the classical photosphere.

    Star formation and galaxy evolution of the Local Universe based on HIPASS Oiwei Ivy Wong Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Physics University of Melbourne December, 2007 Abstract This thesis investigates the star formation and galaxy evolution of the nearby Local Volume based on Neutral Hydrogen (HI) studies. A large portion of this thesis con- sists of work with the Northern extension of the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). HIPASS is an HI survey of the entire Southern sky up to a declination of +25.5 de- grees (including the Northern extension) using the Parkes 64-metre radio telescope. I have also produced a catalogue of the optical counterparts corresponding to the galaxies found in Northern HIPASS. From this optical catalogue, we also conclude that we did not find any isolated dark galaxies. The other half of my thesis consists of work with the SINGG and SUNGG projects. SINGG is the Survey for Ioniza- tion in Neutral Gas Galaxies and SUNGG is the Survey of Ultraviolet emission in Neutral Gas Galaxies. Both SINGG and SUNGG are selected from HIPASS and are star formation studies in the H-alpha and ultraviolet (UV), respectively. My work in the SINGG-SUNGG collaboration is mostly based on SUNGG. Using the results of SUNGG, I measured the local luminosity density and the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD) of the Local Universe. Using far-infrared (FIR) observations from IRAS, the FIR luminosity density was also calculated. Combining the FUV luminosity density and the FIR luminosity density, the bolometric SFRD of the Lo- cal Universe was estimated.

Kelly1, Ori D. Fox1, Alexei V. Filippenko1, S. Bradley Cenko2, Lisa Prato3, Gail Schaefer4, Ken J. Shen1,5, WeiKang Zheng1, Melissa L. Graham1, and Brad E. Tucker1,6 Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal ABSTRACT We constrain the properties of the progenitor system of the highly reddened Type Ia supernova (SN) 2014J in Messier 82 (M82; d ≈ 3:5 Mpc). We determine the SN location using Keck-II K-band adaptive optics images, and we find no evidence for flux from a progenitor system in pre-explosion near-ultraviolet through near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. Our upper limits exclude systems having a bright red giant companion, including symbiotic novae with luminosities comparable to that of RS Ophiuchi. While the flux constraints are also inconsistent with predictions for compar- atively cool He-donor systems (T . 35,000 K), we cannot preclude a system similar to V445 Puppis. The progenitor constraints are robust across a wide range of RV and AV values, but significantly greater values than those inferred from the SN light curve and spectrum would yield proportionally brighter luminosity limits. The comparatively faint flux expected from a binary progenitor system consisting of white dwarf stars would not have been detected in the pre-explosion HST imaging. In- frared HST exposures yield more stringent constraints on the luminosities of very cool (T < 3000 K) companion stars than was possible in the case of SN Ia 2011fe.

All Ks images show a rich population of clusters, but only a small fraction of them is bright in L.MostL sources have radio counterparts. We derived the luminosity function in Ks for the galaxies IC 4661 and NGC 5408, finding both to be consistent with those of similar galaxies. We also compared the number of clusters and their luminosities with the star-formation rate of the host galaxies and found no compelling evidence of correlation. We conclude that young clusters and embedded clusters are a common feature of blue dwarf galaxies and possibly of galaxies in general, we suggest that their occurrence is due to purely statistical effects rather than a phenomenon related to specific physical conditions. A faint blue source is recovered at the SN position, with brightness mFW435 =26.76 0.20, mFW555 =26.60 0.23 and mFW625 =26.32 0.19 mag, although there is no detection in a contemporaneous narrow-band Ha image. The spectral energy distribution of the late-time source is well-fit by a stellar-like spectrum (logTeff > 3.7 and log LL > 4), subject to only a small degree of reddening —consistent with that estimated for SN2006jc itself at early-times. The lack of further outbursts after the explosion of SN2006jc suggests that the precursor outburst originated from the progenitor.
