This is the first time that the genus Laticauda and subfamily Laticaudinae has been reported from Korean waters. The subfamily Laticaudinae has ventrals that are four to five times wider than the adjacent dorsals, which are unlike the ventrals that are similar or up to two times wider than adjacent dorsals in the subfamily Hydrophiinae. Laticauda semifasciata is distinct from other species because it has three prefrontals and its rostrals are horizontally divided into two. As the result of this report, four species (L. semifasciata, Hydrophis (Pelamis) platurus, Hydrophis cyanocinctus, and H. melanocephalus) of sea snakes have been reported in Korean waters. (Rhabdiasidae) and Hedruris miyakoensis sp. n. (Hedruridae) are described from skinks of the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. Neoentomelas asatoi from the lung of Ateuchosaurus pellopleurus on Okinawa and Amami-oshima islands is distinguished from all other rhabdiasids in having well- developed dorsoventral lips with posteriorly directed lobulate formations. Hedruris miyakoensis from the stom- ach of Scincella boettgeri on Miyako Island differs from other species of the genus by the simple lateral cuticular structures of the interlabia, eggs without peripheral swellings, absence of preanal unpaired papilla, stout spicules with prominent accessory structure, simple hook of the holdfast, and/or difference in the measurements. The species is distinguished from its conge- ners by its moderate size: SVL to maximum 108.5 mm, dorsal pattern of five to seven white vertebral blotches between nape and sacrum and six to seven pairs of short white bars on flanks between limb insertions, 1–4 internasals, 30–32 ven- tral scale rows between weak ventrolateral folds, 14–18 precloacal pores in males, 10–14 longitudinal rows of smooth dor- sal tubercles, 14–16 broad lamellae beneath digit I of pes, 17–19 broad lamellae beneath digit IV of pes, and a single transverse row of enlarged tubercles along the posterior portion of dorsum of each tail segment. Nansei Islands Biological Diversity Evaluation Project Report 1 Chapter 1
Introduction WWF Japan’s involvement with the Nansei Islands can be traced back to a request in 1982 by Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. The “World Conservation Strategy”, which was drafted at the time through a collaborative effort by the WWF’s network, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), posed the notion that the problems affecting environments were problems that had global implications. Furthermore, the findings presented offered information on precious environments extant throughout the globe and where they were distributed, thereby providing an impetus for people to think about issues relevant to humankind’s harmonious existence with the rest of nature. One of the precious natural environments for Japan given in the “World Conservation Strategy” was the Nansei Islands. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was the President of the WWF at the time (now President Emeritus), naturally sought to promote acts of conservation by those who could see them through most effectively, i.e. pertinent conservation parties in the area, a mandate which naturally fell on the shoulders of WWF Japan with regard to nature conservation activities concerning the Nansei Islands. This marked the beginning of the Nansei Islands initiative of WWF Japan, and ever since, WWF Japan has not only consistently performed globally-relevant environmental studies of particular areas within the Nansei Islands during the 1980’s and 1990’s, but has put pressure on the national and local governments to use the findings of those studies in public policy. Unfortunately, like many other places throughout the world, the deterioration of the natural environments in the Nansei Islands has yet to stop. -

We present a comprehensive inventory checklist of the herpetofauna of the Bai Tu Long National Park, Quang Ninh Province, northeastern Vietnam. As a result of our herpetological surveys in 2008, 2009, and 2011, a total of 29 spe- cies were recorded from the national park, comprising eight species of frogs, eleven species of lizards, and ten species of snakes. Thirteen species (or 44.8% of the total number of recorded species) were recorded for the first time from Bai Tu Long National Park, including six frog, four lizard, and three snake species. When properly prepared and identified, a shed snake skin can be used as an important voucher; the morphological descriptions of the shed skins may be critical for taxonomic research, as well as studies of snake ecology and conservation. However, few convenient/ expeditious methods or techniques to identify shed snake skins in specific areas have been developed. In this study, we collected and examined a total of 1,260 shed skin samples - including 322 samples from neonates/ juveniles and 938 from subadults/adults - from 53 snake species in Taiwan and adjacent islands, and developed the first guide to identify them. To the naked eye or from scanned images, the sheds of almost all species could be identified if most of the shed was collected. The key features that aided in identification included the patterns on the sheds and scale morphology. -

The communicative ecology approach refers to the various forms, resources, activities, channels and flows of communication and information unique to an island or group of islands, to the island context and identity and a milieu of island agents. This research contributes towards an in-depth understanding of these Islands’ communicative environment; identifies key island mediated communicative networks and practices; explores the role of media in localized information flows unique to the islands; and attempts to explore how small island experiences can help contextualize the theoretical approach of communicative ecology. Frog prices have been converted to present‐day United States dollars (US$). The frogs had a wide range of prices. Premium individuals, in parcular, were oen sold for US$1,000–2,000. In this paper, I discuss the reasons why exceponal individuals were traded at a high price in the market, although Kajika frogs were a common nave species. Other topics, such as the presentaon of frogs as gis to royal families, are also discussed.
