Scherz5 & Miguel Vences6 Evolutionary reduction of adult body size (miniaturization) has profound consequences for organismal biology and is an important subject of evolutionary research. Based on two individuals we describe a new, extremely miniaturized chameleon, which may be the world’s smallest reptile species. The male holotype of Brookesia nana sp. nov. has a snout–vent length of 13.5 mm (total length 21.6 mm) and has large, apparently fully developed hemipenes, making it apparently the smallest mature male amniote ever recorded. The female paratype measures 19.2 mm snout–vent length (total length 28.9 mm) and a micro-CT scan revealed developing eggs in the body cavity, likewise indicating sexual maturity. The new chameleon is only known from a degraded montane rainforest in northern Madagascar and might be threatened by extinction. Molecular phylogenetic analyses place it as sister to B. karchei, the largest species in the clade of miniaturized Brookesia species, for which we resurrect Evoluticauda Angel, 1942 as subgenus name. The genetic divergence of B. nana sp. nov. is rather strong (9.9‒14.9% to all other Evoluticauda species in the 16S rRNA gene). A comparative study of genital length in Malagasy chameleons revealed a tendency for the smallest chameleons to have the relatively largest hemipenes, which might be a consequence of a reversed sexual size dimorphism with males substantially smaller than females in the smallest species. -

93 REPTILES OF THE ALDERMEN ISLANDS by D.R. Towns* and B.W. Haywardt SUMMARY Six species of reptile are recorded from the Aldermen Islands after a visit to all of the islands in the group in May, 1972. They are: the geckos Hoplodactylus pacificus and H, duvauceli; the skinks Leiolopisma oliveri, L. smithi and L. suteri, and the tuatara, Sphenodon punctatus. No reptiles were found on Middle, Half and Hernia Islands but they were abundant on the three largest rat-free islands (Ruamahua-iti, Ruamahua-nui and Hongiora). INTRODUCTION One of us (B.W.H.) collected and noted reptiles seen on the islands during a visit in May, 1972, whilst the senior author (D.R.T.) identified specimens and commented on their occurrence and taxonomy. The party was based on Ruamahua-iti (Fig. I.) and consequently the most detailed collection and observation was made on this island. Two day-trips were made to Middle Island, and one day visits to each of Hongiora, Ruamahua-nui, Half and Hernia Islands were also made. PREVIOUS WORK In 1843, Rev. Wade was shipwrecked on Ruamahua-iti. He commented on the "iguana-like lizards" (no doubt tuataras), and since then there has only been one published report of reptiles on these islands. This was included in a survey by Sladden and Falla (1928), who recorded a skink species {"Lygosoma Smithii"), geckos ("Dactylocnemis" sp.) and tuataras (Sphenodon punctatus). Over the past twenty-five years a number of parties of Internal Affairs Dept. Officers have visited the group and recorded tuataras seen, though no specific study of the reptiles has been attempted. -

Natural history aspects of the Neotropical gecko Phyllopezus pollicaris were studied at Estação Ecológica Serra Geral do Tocantins, in the Cerrado region of Central Brazil. Despite initial prospection at different types of habitats, all individuals were collected at sandstone outcrops within savannahs. Most individuals were observed at night, but several specimens were found active during daytime. Body temperatures were significantly higher in day-active individuals. We did not detect sexual dimorphism in size, shape, weight, or body condition. All adult males were reproductively mature, in contrast to just two adult females (11%), one of which contained two oviductal eggs. Dietary data indicates that P. pollicaris feeds upon a variety of arthropods. Dietary overlap between sexes and age classes was moderate to high. The rate of caudal autotomy varied between age classes but not between sexes. Our data, the first for a population ofP. pollicaris from a savannah habitat, are in overall agreement with observations made in populations from Caatinga and Dry Forest, except for microhabitat use and reproductive cycle. WILD HISTORY: Common house geckos are originally from Southeast Asia, but have established non-native colonies in other parts of the world including Australia, the U.S., Central & South America, Africa and Asia. These colonies were most likely established by geckos who hitched rides on ships and cargo into new worlds. Interestingly, the presence or call of a house gecko can be seen as the harbinger of either good or bad luck – depending upon what part of the world the gecko is in. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTCS: House geckos generally have a yellow-tan or whitish body with brown spots or blotches. The skin on the upper surface of the body has a granular look and feel. The skin on the underbelly is smooth. These geckos have the famous sticky feet that allow them to walk up and down glass without effort. The pads of their feet are actually made up of thousands of tiny, microscopic hairs. House geckos have extremely delicate skin. For this reason, along with the fact that they are easily stressed, they should not be regularly handled. NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION: Nocturnal (most active at night). House geckos are very fast- moving, agile lizards. Handling is not recommended. House geckos will drop their tails (lose them) when trying to escape a predator, because of stress, or from constriction from un-shed skin. -

New lizards and rhynchocephalians from the Lower Cretaceous of southern Italy. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 49 (3): 393–408. The Lower Cretaceous (Albian age) locality of Pietraroia, near Benevento in southern Italy, has yielded a diverse assem− blage of fossil vertebrates, including at least one genus of rhynchocephalian (Derasmosaurus) and two named lizards (Costasaurus and Chometokadmon), as well as the exquisitely preserved small dinosaur, Scipionyx. Here we describe ma− terial pertaining to a new species of the fossil lizard genus Eichstaettisaurus (E. gouldi sp. nov.). Eichstaettisaurus was first recorded from the Upper Jurassic (Tithonian age) Solnhofen Limestones of Germany, and more recently from the basal Cretaceous (Berriasian) of Montsec, Spain. The new Italian specimen provides a significant extension to the tempo− ral range of Eichstaettisaurus while supporting the hypothesis that the Pietraroia assemblage may represent a relictual is− land fauna. The postcranial morphology of the new eichstaettisaur suggests it was predominantly ground−living. Further skull material of E. gouldi sp. nov. was identified within the abdominal cavity of a second new lepidosaurian skeleton from the same locality. This second partial skeleton is almost certainly rhynchocephalian, based primarily on foot and pelvic structure, but it is not Derasmosaurus and cannot be accommodated within any known genus due to the unusual morphology of the tail vertebrae.
