Enclosures KES/tjb SUMMARY OF TESTIMONY OF WARREN J. COX AND MARIO BOIARDI ARCHITECTS, HARTMAN-COX ARCHITECTS Mr. Cox and/or Mr. Boiardi will testify as architects of the proposed project. Mr. Cox is a partner in Hartman- Cox Architects, and Mr. Boiardi is an associate with the firm. Mr. Cox will make a slideshow presentation to describe the overall project, which consists of five (5) major ele- ments. First, the Sumner School Building will be completely and accurately rehabilitated to appear as it was originally constructed. The Board of Education will retain jurisdic- tion over and occupy this building for office, museum, research, library and other educational purposes. The second element consists of an annex wing constructed on the north side of the Sumner School with structure, scale, style and materials in harmony with Sumner. The front portion of the Magruder School, which is immediately east of the Sumner School will be taken apart carefully and then reconstructed with new entrance wings added to form part of a new office complex. The rear portion of the Magruder School will be demolished. Beneath the Magruder School and the new building described below will be a two-level parking garage to provide parking for 148 vehicles. The final element of the project is a new nine-story (plus penthouse) office building located to the north of the Magruder School, and having an eight-story wing extending south to M Street adjacent to and across a public alley from the Jefferson Hotel. The facade of the first eight floors of this new office structure will be grey glass. The ninth floor and penthouse will be reflective glass. The wing of the office structure adjacent to the Jefferson Hotel will be brick with stone or cast stone trim. The brick will be in the color range of variegated limestone and will compliment the color of the materials used for the Jefferson Hotel. At the top of the curtain wall of the off ice structure will be a cornice and applied horizontal mouldings. The ninth floor of the structure has been set back ten feet from the floors below, thereby diminishing the apparent height of the structure when viewed from M Street. The entire project design has been conceived so as to highlight the Sumner School Building. This is the principal reason why the front portion of the Magruder School has been retained. The curtain wall of the new office structure will also highlight the historical significance of the Sumner School. The total development will be 256,208.83 square feet. The floor area ratio (F.A.R.) will be 5.58, which is less than the 6.0 F.A.R. permitted in an SP-2 district.

(WJE) ABSTRACT Cladding the Mid-Century Modern: Thin Stone Veneer-Faced Precast Concrete Sarah Sojung Yoon Dr. Theodore Prudon, Advisor With significant advancements in building technology at the turn of the twentieth century, new building materials and innovative systems changed the conventions of construction and design. New materials were introduced and old materials continued to be transformed for new uses. With growing demand after WWII forcing further modernization and standardization and greater experimentation; adequate research and testing was not always pursued. Focusing on this specific composite cladding material consisting of thin stone veneer-faced precast concrete – the official name given at the time – this research aims to identify what drove the design and how did the initial design change over time. Design decisions and changes are evident from and identified by closely studying the industry and trade literature in the form of articles, handbooks/manuals, and guide specifications. For this cladding material, there are two major industries that came together: the precast concrete industry and the stone industry. Literature from both industries provide a comprehensive understanding of their exchange and collaboration. From the information in the trade literature, case studies using early forms of thin stone veneer-faced precast concrete are identified, and the performance of the material over time is discussed.

    SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON, D.C., URBAN RENEWAL AREA HABS No. DC-856 (Page 79) The congregation, established in 1856 as the Fifth Baptist Church, is one ofWashington, D.C.'s three oldest Baptist churches. It was originally located at 609 E Street in the old - Southwest. Its former congregation was largely white, but today it is a mbcture of black and white members, many of whom live in Virginia and Maryland. The church building has a steep gabled roof, with stained glass windows at the front and back facades' peaked ends. These allow light to enter the tall interior space. The front and back A-frame gables are virtually identical to those of St. Matthew's, although the building la~ tbe side arches incorporated at its :more Modernist neighbor. The fa~de is faced in stone. The front doorway is recessed into a cove of steps, walls, and ceiling. Library Former Conditions The original South~est Branch LI"brary was part of Jefferson Junior High School. Washington, D.C., architect Nathan Corwith Wyeth designed the Georgian ReVival Thomas Jefferson Junior High School and Library, the library of which was dedicated on January 3, 1941.     SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON, D.C., URBAN RENEWAL AREA HABS No. DC-856 (Page76) primarily of former African American slaves. ·The Italianate Gothic brick building, designed by an unknown architect, experienced two additions: a plain brick rear in 1930, and a gabled, brick­ faced front in 1952. The African American architect Howard D. Woodson designed-the second addition.429 Although originally slated for demolition, the church's pastor, Reverend Benjamin H. Whiting, argued that the church was a bedrock neighborhood institution and' succeeded in 1952 in removing the building from the urban renewal area. Nine years•after a new church was built for the church's congregation in 1965, they sold the old building to Miracle Temple of Faith Baptist Church. In 1982, it was sold to the Redeemed Temple of Jesus Christ. ·1n2001, due to deterioration, the building closed.430 Today, a new developer, Steve Tanner, is in the process of convertin the site to condominium units, while maintaining much of the old, white, dilapidated 1 structure. 6 · The new Friendship Baptist Church is located at 900 Delaware Avenue at the comer of Delaware A venue and Eye Street. With a seating capacity of 1,500, itis the largest church in the Southwest urban renewal area. Vaughn, Ferguson and Woodson designed the building. Construction began in 1964,432 and the church was dedicated in September 1965.
