It is a serial cultural property that has eight component parts, all of which are linked to the worship of a sacred island that has continued from the fourth century to the present day. These component parts include Okitsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, which encompasses the entire island of Okinoshima and its three attendant reefs, located in the strait between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean peninsula; Okitsu- miya Yohaisho and Nakatsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, located on the island of Oshima; and Hetsu-miya of Munakata Taisha and the Shimbaru-Nuyama Mounded Tomb Group, located on the main island of Kyushu. Okinoshima has unique archaeological sites that have survived nearly intact, providing a chronological account of how ancient rituals based on nature worship developed from the fourth to the ninth centuries. It is of outstanding archaeological value also because of the number and quality of offerings discovered there, underscoring the great importance of the rituals and serving as evidence of their evolution over a period of 500 years, in the midst of a process of dynamic overseas exchange in East Asia.

Of Mice and Maidens: Ideologies of Interspecies Romance in Late Medieval and Early Modern Japan Abstract Interspecies marriage (irui kon'in) has long been a central theme in Japanese literature and folklore. Frequently dismissed as fairytales, stories of interspecies marriage illuminate contemporaneous conceptions of the animal-human boundary and the anxieties surrounding it. This dissertation contributes to the emerging field of animal studies yb examining otogizoshi (Muromachi/early Edo illustrated narrative fiction) concerning elationshipsr between human women and male mice. The earliest of these is Nezumi no soshi ("The Tale of the Mouse"), a fifteenth century ko-e ("small scroll") attributed to court painter Tosa Mitsunobu. Nezumi no soshi was followed roughly a century later by a group of tales collectively named after their protagonist, the mouse Gon no Kami. Unlike Nezumi no soshi, which focuses on the grief of the woman who has unwittingly married a mouse, the Gon no Kami tales contain pronounced comic elements and devote attention to the mouse-groom's perspective.

  • How Religion and Belief Influenced the Way of the Samurai
Sword and Spirit: Bushido in Practice from the Late Sengoku Era through the Edo Period Joe Lovatt Seminar Paper Presented to the Department of History Western Oregon University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in History Spring 2009 Approved Date Approved Date Hst 499: Prof. Max Geier & Prof. Narasingha Sil 2 Sword and Spirit: Bushido in Practice from the late Sengoku era through the Edo period By Joe Lovatt The Samurai possessed a strict code of ethics known as Bushido (the way of the warrior), which allowed them to become some of the greatest warrior the world has ever known. However, there were different embodiments of this system, personifications that two Samurai themselves have documented in two of the most well known books ever written by Samurai; The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi and Hagakure, by Yamamoto Tsunetomo. Bushido has usually been considered an ethical code that was set to a certain standard, just as the ten commandments are. This analysis suggests that it was in fact not a set of moral laws, but that bushido was embodied differently by every Samurai. Bushido was ultimately a guideline, just like rules in religion. It was a path that one was to adhere to as well as they could, but history has made it clear that it depended upon the circumstances in which a Samurai lived; the life of a Samurai in the twelfth century would filled with fighting for their master and practical use of the code; far different from that of a Samurai living during the first half of the 1800’s, who would be keeping track of the business operations of their master instead of fighting.

  • Myths & Legends of Japan
Myths & Legends Of Japan By F. Hadland Davis Myths & Legends of Japan CHAPTER I: THE PERIOD OF THE GODS In the Beginning We are told that in the very beginning "Heaven and Earth were not yet separated, and the In and Yo not yet divided." This reminds us of other cosmogony stories. The In and Yo, corresponding to the Chinese Yang and Yin, were the male and female principles. It was more convenient for the old Japanese writers to imagine the coming into being of creation in terms not very remote from their own manner of birth. In Polynesian mythology we find pretty much the same conception, where Rangi and Papa represented Heaven and Earth, and further parallels may be found in Egyptian and other cosmogony stories. In nearly all we find the male and female principles taking a prominent, and after all very rational, place. We are told in theNihongi that these male and female principles "formed a chaotic mass like an egg which was of obscurely defined limits and contained germs." Eventually this egg was quickened into life, and the purer and clearer part was drawn out and formed Heaven, while the heavier element settled down and became Earth, which was "compared to the floating of a fish sporting on the surface of the water." A mysterious form resembling a reed-shoot suddenly appeared between Heaven and Earth, and as suddenly became transformed into a God called Kuni-toko- tachi, ("Land-eternal-stand-of-august-thing"). We may pass over the other divine births until we come to the important deities known as Izanagi and Izanami ("Male-who-invites" and "Female-who-invites").

There is a walking path around the circumference of the pond that is just a little over two kilometers long and is popular for jogging and leisurely strolls by the water. Ohori is Japanese for moat, and the pond at the center of the park once served as part of the moat system of the neighboring Fukuoka Castle. The park was constructed between 1926 and 1929 and designed after the classical garden style of the West Lake in China. There are three islands in the middle of the pond that are connected to the mainland and each other by elegant stone bridges. During the Edo Period (1603-1867), Fukuoka Castle used to be the largest castle on Kyushu, but it was almost completely torn down after the Meiji Restoration as an unwanted symbol of the feudal past. Nowadays only ruined walls and a few turrets remain, and the park attracts visitors with walking trails and a few lookout points.

Kikigaki 5 ( 482 to 632 ) Sayings and deeds of Lords Mitsushige and Tsunashige 482) Lord Mitsushige inherits his household in February, 1657 at the age of 26. On February 19, Okabe Naizen and Tamba-no-kami summoned Nabeshima Izumi- no-kami Naotomo to Edo Castle, and informed that Lord Katsushige was admitted to retire and that Mitsushige, his grandson, was allowed to succeed to the household of Saga Clan. On March 1 Prince Mitsushige paid a visit to the castle to express his gratitude to the Shogunate. He donated a sword inscribed with the name of Bungo Yukihira, 300 leaves of silver, 100 hundred sheets of fine silk, while Lord Katsushige offered a sword made by Sadamune and a scroll of picture with a peony design. Nabeshima Mondo, Nabeshima Nui-no-suke, and Arita Kageyu, administrative retainers, also donated ex- penses to buy horses. On January 18 a big fire broke out in Edo, burning our clan’s Sakurada residence. Prince Mitsushige moved to the Aoyama residence, then again to the Azabu residence on May 4. On May 19 a gale blew and burnt Edo Castle and many more houses, though the secondary enclosure of the castle escaped the fire. Spreading to nearly 90 km, it claimed the lives of more than 37,000 people. * Okabe Naizen and Tamba-no-kami were high ranking officials for the Shogunate. * Nabeshima Izumi-no-kami was the lord of the Kashima branch clan. 483) The era name changes from Meireki to Manji in May 1658. The lord is aged 27. Lord Mitsushige was admitted by the Shogunate to return to Saga in February, and left Edo on the last day, arriving in Saga on April 5.
