Shaping a Better Future For Our County and All Our Communties Tourism for All Many tourists have some kind of access need, and if a business or a destination does not cater for these, the upshot is that they will go elsewhere. dlr is one of the first Local Authorities in Ireland to set its sights on growing the accessible tourism market this year and beyond. The core aim is to make the county and its attractions accessible for tourists of all ages and abilities. This project is being driven by An Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Tom Murphy who has said “Good access in facilities, products, and services is not only of benefit to visitors but it’s also necessary for all our citizens. We need to bring everyone into this discussion, our public bodies, private businesses, tourism service providers, institutions, associations, community groups and the general public in developing Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown as a destination for all”. In implementing this project, Director of Service Mary T Daly highlighted the need for an organisational approach to this topic. She has facilitated an inter departmental programme of accessible tourism training in dlr. The Council is also in the process of completing a pilot accessibility audit of the main tourist access points in the area. On 26 April, dlr will host a tourism conference which will bring together local, national and international organisations who will use real case studies to highlight how accessibility and inclusion as quality factors in tourism can have a positive economic impact. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown as a county has a lot to offer with our wonderful natural assets of the mountains and the sea. We need to have a conversation about how we can improve our offering as a tourist destination, with a focus on delivering tourism for all.
04 dlr times INFORMATION AND NEWS FROM DÚN LAOGHAIRE-RATHDOWN COUNTY COUNCIL Public Information Winners at LAMA Awards At the recent All Ireland Community and Council Awards, Tennis for All (Shankill Tennis Club), won the Best Community Sports Team Club and Ballyogan Summer Festival won the silver award in Best Arts/Culture initiative. Both initiatives have received grant funding from dlr and we are delighted to see two great community services win awards this year. The LAMA awards pay tribute to communities and Local Authorities who work together to improve the quality of life for all citizens. Tennis for All provides access to a world class sports facility for all members of the community at a low cost. It was the first club in Ireland to pilot a Blind Tennis Tournament and is currently developing an in-patients programme for St John of God’s Hospital in Stillorgan. The Ballyogan Summer Festival is a week-long diverse multicultural event bringing communities together through shared history, culture, arts and music. Fernhill Park and Gardens in Stepaside, a former substantial family residence on 34 hectares, is currently being restored and will be developed into a high quality sustainable regional public park. A sustainability strategy for Fernhill is in place setting out the Council’s plan to generate power from within the Park’s own renewable resources through a combination of wind, solar and hydro. Fernhill Park will be a unique public amenity, not only for the residents of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and surrounding regions, but will be a prime visitor attraction for visitors to the area. What I do? My day to day role is extremely varied, it includes organising training courses and workshops that support businesses who are seeking to sell their products and services online through the Trading Online Voucher scheme, and managing the county competition of the national Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition.
