Designer Pierre-Yves Rochon has brought his touch of genius to the new suites, the Lake View Loft Suites, the Imperial Suite and the Royale Suite. THE PERSONALITIES WHO HAVE LEFT THEIR MARK

While the history of the hotel has undeniably been enriched by the extraordinary destiny of its famous visitors, history with a capital H arguably requires exceptional places such as Beau-Rivage Genève to make things happen.

1898

In 1898, Geneva becomes the last stage in the life of the restless Empress Sissi. On September 9, she boards a paddle steamer in Montreux and travels across the lake to visit Baroness Rothschild. Sissi spends the night in Hotel Beau-Rivage Genève. In the early afternoon of the next day, she and her Hungarian lady-in-waiting, Countess Irma Sztáray, depart in order to reach the liner “Genève” for their return to Montreux. Directly in front of the ship, the Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni stabs the empress with a sharpened file. Sissi is still able to board, but not until after the ship has cast off is the seriousness of her injury recognized. The liner returns to the jetty. After a one-hour struggle for her life, the Austrian Empress dies in her suite in Hotel Beau-Rivage Genève at 2:40 p.m. at age 61. Halfway between Pont du Mont-Blanc and the crossing to Rue des Alpes, a small bronze plaque on the railing of the lakefront and a statue of Sissi in Rotonde du Mont-Blanc both serve as reminders of her assassination. In the former suite of the Empress in Hotel Beau Rivage, some of Elisabeth’s personal items and reminders of her day of death, including a silk ribbon stained with blood, have been saved. In the Basilica of our Lady of Geneva a colorful church window with an inscription and date commemorates PRINCESS Sissi’s death with compassion: The portrayed Saint Elisabeth displays the features of the Empress of Austria. CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1970 7000 magnums bottled for this vintage. There are still a few at Beau-Rivage Genève.

Back in 1976, when the Judgement of Paris took place, the french navel-gazing was severely rated. Nevertheless, Mouton Rothschild 1970 won the second position of this blind tasting, and thanks to its excellence, old world wines are not totally disregarded, as only one wine from California ranked above it.

But today, Mouton Rothschild 1970, it is a wine at his peak, a smooth and ripe palate for this growth from Pauillac, fragrances of vanilla, undergrowth and cocoa. The lengh is slightly spicy and seems endless.

For the little story, in 1970, Mouton Rothschild was only Second Growth in the 1855 Médoc Classification. It is thanks to the level of this vintage andthanks to the minister at the time, Jacques Chirac, that Mouton was ranked First Growth in 1973. “First I am, Second I was, Mouton doesn’t change”
