Ndebele-Murisa PhD, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology Department, University of the Western Cape Analysis of temperature, rainfall and evaporation records over a 44-year period spanning the years 1964 to 2008 indicates changes in the climate around Lake Kariba. Mean annual temperatures have increased by approximately 1.5oC, and pan evaporation rates by about 25%, with rainfall having declined by an average of 27.1 mm since 1964 at an average rate of 6.3 mm per decade. At the same time, lake water temperatures, evaporation rates, and water loss from the lake have increased, which have adversely affected lake water levels, nutrient and thermal dynamics. The most prominent influence of the changing climate on Lake Kariba has been a reduction in the lake water levels, averaging 9.5 m over the past two decades. These are associated with increased warming, reduced rainfall and diminished water and therefore nutrient inflow into the lake. The warmer climate has increased temperatures in the upper layers of lake water, the epilimnion, by an overall average of 1.9°C between 1965 and 2009. -

Hence the miracidial larvae of a given schistosome will develop in a compatible snail but upe*\. ^entering an incompatible snail an immune response will be elicited which destroys the trematode. 4 The factors governing such interactions were investigated using the following host/parasite combination? Bulinus natalensis and B^_ nasutus with the parasite Spect'e3 marqrebowiei. This schistosome^develops in B^_ natalensis but not in B_;_ nasutus. The immune defence system of snails consists of cells (haemocytes) and haemolymph factors. -

Determining the conservation value of land in Mpumalanga April 2002 Prepared for DWAF/DFID STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT Prepared by A.J. Emery, M. Lötter and S.D. Williamson Mpumalanga Parks Board Private Bag X11338 Nelspruit 1200 [email protected] Executive Summary This report is aimed at identifying areas of biodiversity importance within Mpumalanga through the use of existing data and expert knowledge, and the development of species and Geographic Information System (GIS) databases. This study adopted a similar approach to that developed by the Kwa-zulu Natal Nature Conservation Services in their report “Determining the conservation value of land in KwaZulu-Natal”. The approach was based on the broad Keystone Centre (1991) definition of biodiversity (the variety of life and its processes), and therefore analysed the complete biodiversity hierarchy excluding the genetic level. The hierarchy included landscapes, three well-defined communities, one floristic region, one broad vegetation community and eight broad species groups (Figure 1.1). The species groups included threatened plants, economically important medicinal plants, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. Species data and GIS coverages were obtained from a wide variety of sources. Digital coverages of two detailed vegetation communities, wetlands and forest, were compiled from all available sources. Special effort was made to map additional forests and wetlands that had not previously been mapped. Acocks Veld Types and Centres and Regions of Plant Endemism (Phytochoria) were used to define the broad plant communities. The species data were compiled from published papers, private and public collections in herbaria and museums, personal observations and MPB records. The resulting species databases afforded the MPB the opportunity to capture all its species records in databases, which in turn were used to investigate the various species layers. -

Environmental factors behind recruitment variability were investigated through the examination of otolith microstructure from field captured sardine larvae samples while historical length-frequency data were analysed to establish size-at- recruitment. The larval ecology study established that food was the only possible limiting factor as far as growth and survival are concerned. -

Distribution and habitats of the alien invader freshwater snail Physa acuta in South Africa KN de Kock* and CT Wolmarans School of Environmental Sciences and Development, Zoology, Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University, Private Bag X6001, Potchefstroom 2520, South Africa Abstract This article focuses on the geographical distribution and habitats of the invader freshwater snail species Physa acuta as reflected by samples taken from 758 collection sites on record in the database of the National Freshwater Snail Collection (NFSC) at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University. This species is currently the second most widespread 1 alien invader freshwater snail species in South Africa. The 121 different loci ( /16- degree squares) from which the samples were collected, reflect a wide but discontinuous distribution mainly clustered around the major ports and urban centres of South Africa. Details of each habitat as described by collectors during surveys were statistically analysed, as well as altitude and mean annual air temperatures and rainfall for each locality. This species was reported from all types of water-bodies rep- resented in the database, but the largest number of samples was recovered from dams and rivers. Chi-square and effect size values were calculated and an integrated decision tree constructed from the data which indicated that temperature, altitude and types of water-bodies were the important factors that significantly influenced the distribution ofP. acuta in South Africa. Its slow progress in invading the relatively undisturbed water-bodies in the Kruger National Park as compared to the recently introduced invader freshwater snail species, Tarebia granifera, is briefly discussed. -

TAXONOMIC STUDY OF THE BULINUS AFRICANUS GROUP IN KENYA BY RICHARD ARCHER A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy from the University of London and the Diploma of Membership of Imperial College Department of Pure and Applied Biology, Imperial College, London SW7 and Experimental Taxonomy Unit, Department of Zoology, British Museum (Natural History), London SW7 5BD. 2 ABSTRACT Certain species of the Bulinus africanus group have been implicated in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium in Kenya. Full taxonomic resolution of the group has previously been hampered by extensive intergradation of form between certain taxa. The major source of difficulty has been the inadequate quantification of traditional characters, particularly those on the shell. With the advent of various numerical and experimental techniques there is a need for re-assessment of shell morphology. This study involved the morphological characterisation of populations from Western and Central Kenya, using new and traditional shell variables. These were standardised and quantified morphometrically, producing two data sets: PI, consisting of four morphologically distinct samples; and P2, consisting of 10 larger samples, less visually distinct. PI and P2 were subjected to multivariate analysis, principally Canonical Variates Analysis and Principal Components Analysis. This study suggests that Principal Components Analysis is of limited use in resolving samples using shell variables. Canonical Variate Analysis is a more useful technique since it minimises the effects of variation within each sample whilst maximising variation between samples. Numerical analysis suggests the presence of three morphotypes among these samples, corresponding to the b.africanus^B.nasutus and B.globosus/ugandae forms. The effects of isometric and allometric growth are discussed. -
