113 Asian Cities Depicted by European Painters ― Clues from a Japanese Folding Screen Junko NINAGAWA ヨーロッパ人が描いたアジアの諸 都市 ―日本の萬国図屏風を手がかりに 蜷 川 順 子 東京の三の丸尚蔵館が所蔵する八曲一双の萬国図屏風には、制作当時の日本に知られ ていた最新の世界のイメージが描かれている。その主要な源泉は1609年のいわゆるブラ ウ=カエリウスの地図だと考えられるが、タイトルに名前のあるブラウ(1571‒1638)が1606 年に制作し1607年に出版したメルカトール図法による世界地図が、本件と深くかかわって いる。この地図は、その正確さ、地理的情報の新しさ、装飾の美しさなどの点で評判が 高く、これを借用したり模倣したりする他の地図制作者も少なくなかった。カエリウス(1571 ‒c. 1646)もそうした業者のひとりで、1609年に上述のブラウの世界地図を正確に模倣し たブラウ = カエリウスの地図を出版した。 カトリック圏のポルトガル人やスペイン人は、プロテスタント圏の都市アムステルダムで活 躍していたブラウの地図をその市場で購入することもできたが、カトリック圏の都市アント ウェルペンの出身であるカエリウスの方が接触しやすかったものと思われる。おそらくは 彼らの要請により、自身も優れた地図制作者であったカエリウスが1606/07年のブラウの 世界地図を正確に模倣し、そのことによる業務上の係争を避けるために、制作後ただち に同市から出帆する船の積荷に加えさせたのであろう。 ポルトガル人がこの地図を日本にもたらし、そのモチーフを使った屏風の制作に関わっ たことは明らかである。都市図のもっとも大きい区画をポルトガルの地図が占め、1606/07 年のオランダの地図にはなかったカトリックの聖都ローマの都市図が上段の中心付近に置 かれている。ポルトガル領内の第二の都市インドのゴアが、地図の装飾の配置から考えて ほぼ中心にあるのは、インドを天竺として重視した仏教徒にアピールするためであろうか。 こうすることで、日本におけるポルトガル人の存在を認めるよう日本の権力者に促す意図が あったのかもしれない。ここではさらに、制作に関わったと思われる日本人画家の関心な どを、アジアの都市図の描き方を手がかりに論じた。 114 A Japanese folding screen illustrated with twenty-eight cityscapes and portraits of eight sovereigns of the world [Fig. 1], the pair to a left-hand one depicting a world map and people of diff erent nations [Fig. 2], preserved in the Sannomaru Shōzōkan, or the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Tokyo, is widely recognized as one of the earliest world imageries known to Japan at that time 1). While confirming several previously docu- mented trends − e.g. the adoption of erroneous Ptolemaic longitudes by 15th and 16th-century European cartographers, or the striking accuracy of Arabic-language tables of coordinates−, we have observed accurate LongMed values largely unnoticed by historians in 16th-century maps and noted that widely diverging LongMed values coexisted up to 1750, sometimes even within the works of one same author. -

Iacobo Castaldo Stock#: 37039aj Map Maker: de Jode Date: 1578 Place: Antwerp Color: Hand Colored Condition: VG Size: 20.5 x 16.5 inches Price: SOLD Description: Rare old color example of the first state of De Jode's first map of Africa, from the 1578 edition of his Speculum Orbis Terrarum. The map is divided into two sections and includes an elephant, lions, battle scene, sailing ships and palm trees. First state with Latin text on verso but without the addition of "Cum privilegio" in the title cartouche. The map is based on the famous eight sheet Giacomo Gastaldi wall map of Africa of 1564. Within the title, De Jode recognizes Gastaldi as the author of this work ("Autore M. Iacobo Castoldo"). As De Jode was represented at the important Frankfurt Book Fair where he bought and sold maps, he possibly obtained a copy of the Gastaldi wall map of Africa during one of these fairs. Other than reducing Gastaldi's heavily detailed, eight-sheet map to one folio-sized map, the basic outline for Africa and its hydrographical and topographic features are the same. Koeman (1967-71) theorizes that De Jode may have been inspired to issue his own atlas, based on the immediate success of Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. It is therefore likely that this map of Africa may have been prepared sometime after 1570, but before 1578, with the intention that it would eventually be included in De Jode's atlas, pending receipt of a publisher's privilege intended to prevent unauthorized copying of his maps. -
Visscher Redrawn
VISSCHER REDRAWN By Robin Reynolds after Claes Jansz Visscher 1 Visscher Redrawn is a pen-and-ink revision of Dutch engraver Claes Jansz Visscher’s London panorama, published in 1616. In it, 21st century artist Robin Reynolds depicts modern London, arranged on the fantastic Visscher landscape. The new work was first exhibited at London’s Guildhall Art Gallery from February to November 2016, as part of the City of London’s William Shakespeare 400th and Great Fire 350th anniversary programmes. The piece includes references to the Great Fire and the London Blitz – two events that reshaped London – and hidden in the drawing are visual references to all of Shakespeare’s major works. You can find the clues, drawn from Shakespeare’s texts, on pages 17-20. While researching Visscher Redrawn, Robin Reynolds explored the life and works of Visscher and his associates in the Dutch Golden Age. WAGNER FOREWORD The opportunity afforded me to publish the present article, whieh might appropriately be called More Imaginary California Geography, allows me to make a few corrections and amplifica- tions to Some Imaginary California Geography, published in the PROCEEDINGS for April, 1926. On page 21 of that article in referring to Juan de Fuca a statement is made about the abortive expedition of 1589 or 1590 financed by Hernando de Sanctotis in which Fuca perhaps took part. There was an expedition of about 1589 or 1590 financed by Sanctotis but it was not the abortive one to which Fuca refers. This took place in late 1593 or early 1594 and was financed by Sebastian Vizcaino's company. On page 48 the date of Father Benavides' memorial is incorrectly given as 1632 instead of 1630. Since 1926 a map of Guilleaume Bleau has been unearthed which is believed by Dr. F. A. Wieder to have been made in 1648. A reproduction of it was published in Vol. 3 of the Monumenta Cartographica. If the date assigned to the map by Dr. Wieder is correct it is probably the earliest one of Briggs' type with corrections. I have lately received from Mr. G. R. G. Conway in Mexico City a photograph of a manuscript map in Tomo X of the Muñoz documents in the Real Academia de la Historia, Madrid. It is not dated nor is the Derrotero which it precedes. The place names on the northwest coast are different from those on the Briggs map and the arrangement of them is also different. -

Venetian Cartography and the Globes of the Tommaso Rangone Monument in S. Giuliano, Venice* Jill Carrington Highly specific stone reliefs of a terrestrial and a celestial globe flank the bronze statue of physician and university professor Tommaso Rangone (1493-1577) in his funerary monument on the façade of S. Giuliano in Venice (1554-1557; installed c. 1558) (Fig. 1).1 The present essay is the first to examine the strikingly specific imagery of these globes; it compares them to actual maps and globes, argues that the features of the globes were inspired by contemporary world maps likely owned by Rangone himself, relates the globes to the emergence of globe pairs at the time and situates them within the thriving production of maps, atlases, and treatises in mid-sixteenth century Venice and in the very neighborhood where these cartographic works were produced and sold. -

It was compiled by the dedi- cated work of Eric Wolf from 1984-2007 and Joel Kovarsky from 2007-2017. The worldwide cartographic community thanks them greatly. Summary The aim of this paper is to present an instance of cultural transfer within the field of late Enlightenment antiquarian cartography of Greece, examining a series of maps printed in French and Greek, in Paris and Vienna, between 1788 and 1811 and related to Abbé Barthé- lemy’s Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece . The case-study allows analysing the al- terations of the content of the work and the changes of its symbolic functions, alterations due first to the transferral of medium (from a textual description to a cartographic representation) and next, to the successive transfers of the work in diverse cultural environments. The trans- fer process makes it possible to investigate some aspects of the interplay of classical studies, antiquarian erudition and politics as a form of interaction between the French and the Greek culture of the period. ‘The eye of History’ The Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece , by Abbé Jean-Jacques Barthélemy (1716- 1795) 1, was published on the eve of the French Revolution (1788) and had a manifest effect on its public. “In those days”, the Perpetual Secretary of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, Bon-Joseph Dacier (1742-1833) was to recall in 1826, “an unexpected sight came to impress and surprise our spirit. -
Power, Cloth and Currency on the Loango Coast
POWER, CLOTHAND CURRENCYON THE LOANGOCOAST Phyllis M. Martin Indiana University Cloth was a basic resource for the peoples of the Loango Coast' throughout their precolonial history. It was used in daily life for furnishings and for clothing; it was essential in landmark events such as initiation and burial ceremonies; it was part of key transactions that cemented lineage and state alliances; and it served as a currency. The importation of European cloth from the sixteenth century began a transition from indigenous, domestically produced cloth to a reliance on foreign cloth, but cloth maintained its significance as a key resource at all levels of society. Access to sources of cloth and control of its distribution were closely associated with the wielding of power, whether by royal administrators, lineage elders, religious specialists or merchant-brokers. Raphia Cloth Production The great rainforests of Central Africa reach their western margins in the mountainous Mayombe region in the hinterland of the Loango Coast. This was also the inland limit of the three kingdoms that historically dominated the area - Ngoyo, Kakongo and, the largest, Loango. In these fringes of the equatorial forest, palm trees grew in such profusion that a late sixteenth- century account referred to the region as "the land of palms."2 Of the many varieties, several were important in cloth production. The fibers of the "bamboo" or wine palm, rafia vinifera or ntombe, were commonly used for the most basic cloth and for currency; and from the leaf fibers of the fan palm, hyphaene guineensis or nteva, cloths of particularly high quality were woven.3 The trees were both cultivated and grew wild.
