Quality paint looks good on your car or truck for a long time. Just ask Charlie Murray, Sr. or Charlie Murray, Jr. at Ryan Automotive Supply. This company started in 1937 as Ryan Supply Company: Jackson and Hattiesburg. The Jackson store has been at the current location since 2006. If you need information or the process involved in prepping, sanding and painting, just visit the Car Color department at Ryan Automotive Supply. Taking the inexpensive route will not give the results Classic Car Collectors are seeking. Let’s face it. Compliments and recognition comes with beautiful paint and clear coat finish on our prized cars or trucks. How many Body Shops paint vehicles in Hinds, Rankin and Madison counties? There are over 50 Production Shops doing collision/insurance work. There are hundreds of small independent shops doing paint and body work. If your vehicle requires a $25,000 plus restoration, less than 10 shops can be found in the area. Who do these body shops go to for professional advice? You guessed it. They call Jeffrey Dooley at Ryan Automotive Supply or a member of his staff. Mickey Ray and William Blakeney are experienced and highly trained in preparation products. Getting the prep work done right is mandatory. Five times the hours are spent on prep work than laying down paint or clear coat. High quality body fillers, primers, sand paper, rubbing compounds, and polishes result in a show quality restoration. Where can you go for paint color matching? You guessed it. This auto paint store has the ACQUIRE SPECTRO PHOTOMETER. This devise can determine the exact color of a flat sample of the paint the size of a business card. Once the color is determined, high quality mixing paint pigments are blended and mixed. Jeffrey, Mickey, and William have over 180 toners in stock for preparing the exact paint color. Chromabase, Cromax Pro, Spies Hecker and Imron Elite base paints are used. Just go to the professionals to get the recommendations and products. We are fortunate to have Ryan Automotive Supply as a MCC sponsor. All photos were taken at 701 East Silas Brown Street. Lucky 13 is a retired race car parked on the show room floor. This car was restored to a high restoration level 10 years ago. What a beauty and collector delight even today. It won an award at the 2014 Scarecrow Show. Interior Refreshed Story by MCC Member – Henri Fuselier Sometimes you may have a project that you don’t want to sink a lot of money into but you want to freshen things up a bit. This is where I was for my 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88. When I first saw the car this is what the drivers’ door panel looked like: Even after several attempts of cleaning, the stains did not come out. The quote I got to restore the door panels was $150 per panel. I was looking at over $500 to do all four! At the time, I was focusing on my ’48 Chrysler and did not want to make that investment in this car. A few weeks later while watching “Muscle Car” on Spike, they did a segment on Duplicolor interior paint. It looked easy enough and I thought, “why not”. I went to the parts store and bought a can of cleaner / degreaser, adhesion promoter and paint. The total cost for all three was under $45. The first thing to do was tape off areas that were not to be painted. It took me about an hour per each side of the car. Following the instruction on the cans, I cleaned and degreased each area. I then sprayed each with a coat of the adheasion promoter. Lastly, I applied three light coats of color. Here are the results: Not bad for under $45 bucks and three and a half hours of my time. It has been 6 months and not flaking or peeling. I would not hesitate to use the Duplicolor products again, even on a project that I was willing to invest more in as long as the material is not damaged. I will give me those funds to invest in other areas or projects. Click here to visit the Duplicolor website! Garage Tour Set For June 6th! By MCC Member – Mike Martin The Mississippi Classic Cruisers have a real treat in store for the annual Garage Tour. The event this year will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015. We plan to leave the parking lot of Primos’ Restaurant located at 2323 Lakeland Drive in Flowood, MS (located on the South side of Lakeland about ½ mile to the East of the Pearl River). Departure time will be at 8:30am. We will drive down Lakeland Drive (Highway 25) to the home of Jimmy and Lissa Jones. They live at 3698 Highway 471 in Brandon, MS (at the Goshen Springs Exit off of Highway 25). Jimmy and Lissa have a number of acres at this site on which their home/garage/horse farm are situated. The garage is about 4,000 square feet and houses some special cars as well as one of the best sign collections in the State. Jimmy has been collecting signs and restoring them for the last 30+ years. The Jones’ have a number of fine automobiles including a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, a 2012 Camaro ZL1 (500+hp), 1973 Chevelle Super Sport, 1970 Chevelle Super Sport, 1967 Chevrolet Nova Super Sport and a 1968 Camaro RS/SS. This last vehicle is exceedingly rare being factory produced with a 396 cubic inch engine with aluminum cylinder heads. It is restored to a high degree and is one of less than 20 such vehicles that survive. However, without proper documentation the vehicle is worth much less. Jimmy’s story of chasing down the documentation is very interesting. We then will travel a very scenic route across the top of the Reservoir and then down the Natchez Trace, ending up eventually (complete directions will follow in an email to all) at the home of Doug and Carol White in Johnstone Subdivision off of Highway 463 west of Madison-191 Johnstone Drive. The Whites have a fine home and they have recently built a wonderful garage to house their collection of special automobiles and also a handsome sign collection. The garage was built in 2013 and is 4,500 square feet in size. The Whites own some very unique automobiles, all completed to a high degree of finish and correctness. The owned vehicles include two 1957 Chevrolet Corvettes; a 1966 Ford F-100 pickup with a 428 Cobra Jet engine and a C6 automatic transmission; a 1966 Dodge Coronet convertible with 472 cubic inch Hemi engine; a 1969 Plymouth GTX 440 auto; a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (winged car) Vitamin C Orange; a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (winged) Subline Green; a 1970 Dodge Coronet R/T, 440, 4 speed; a 1969 Dodge Charger 500, 4 speed and a 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT. We will then travel just a bit farther out Hwy 463 then North on Highway 22 to the home of Robert and Rebecca Watson. The Watsons own the Watson Ford dealership in Jackson. They have a fine home on acreage at 178 Augusta Lane in Madison, MS. In 2013, they built a fine 6,500 square foot garage near their home. This fine structure holds a number of special cars that the Watsons have collected over the last number of years. Their collection includes a 1927 Pierce Arrow, a 1928 Ford Model A truck, a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr, a 1947 Mercury Woody station wagon, a 1953 MG TD roadster, a 1954 Chevrolet Corvette, a 1957 Ford Thunderbird, a 1958 Ford F- 100 pickup, a 1959 Ford Fairlane Galaxie Skyliner Retractable, a 1965 Ford Thunderbird, a 1966 Ford Mustang, a 1966 Ford F-100 pickup, a 1969 Ford Boss Mustang, a 1972 Ford Bronco, a 2002 Thunderbird, a 2005 Ford GT and a 2015 Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary Edition. The Watson’s home, lake, grounds and garage, just like the Jones’ and Whites are not to be missed. MCC will provide a catered lunch on the grounds of the Watsons. The tour should be over soon after 1:00 PM. The Mississippi Classic Cruisers have been to some fine garages in the past. This group, however, will be hard to top. Make your plans to attend.
