Monmouth School for Boys Appointment of part time teacher of Maths with Physics For September 2020 Introduction

Monmouth School for Boys is looking to appoint a part time teacher of Maths with Physics from September 2020.

A thriving day and for around 514 boys aged 11 to 18, Monmouth School for Boys is one of the family of five Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools which benefit from the financial stability provided by the William Jones’s Schools Foundation endowment. Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the border of England and South , the schools are known for their strength of community, their commitment to academic excellence and their focus on supporting the wider interests and needs of each individual pupil.

This is an exciting time to join the boys’ school. There is a focus on greater collaboration between the five schools and, in 2018/19, the two senior schools launched fully co-educational teaching in the Sixth Form, with pastoral care remaining the responsibility of the individual schools.

Applications are sought from subject specialists with a passion for outstanding teaching and a commitment to delivering the best all-round educational outcomes for pupils. The School

Monmouth School for Boys was founded in 1614 by William Jones and our trustees are the Haberdashers, one of the 12 great livery companies.

We guide day and boarding pupils aged 11-18 through this crucial stage of their educational and emotional development. We provide a positive, constructive and inspiring single-sex community within which they thrive and flourish.

We take great pride in including boys from different backgrounds and our wide range of scholarships and bursaries make this a reality. There is a sense that anything is possible at Monmouth.

We have 514 boys, aged 7-18, with over 350 day boys and more than 160 boarders. Entrance to the school is by examination at 11+ and 13+, with a significant number of boys also joining the Sixth Form after GCSEs.

Education is carefully planned to motivate and challenge boys; the academic curriculum is specifically tailored to them, and they engage in a broad choice of subjects free from any gender stereotyping.

Our boys’ talents are nurtured and they make the most of the area’s wonderful natural resources and the excellent facilities on offer for sports, culture and the arts.

Through our unique Monmouth Model, our boys also benefit from the invaluable interaction with Monmouth School for Girls, sharing many trips and expeditions, events and community projects.

Understanding the pressures of adolescence, our focused approach prepares boys for Sixth Form, where we offer the benefits of single-sex pastoral care within a co- educational academic environment.

As a town, Monmouth is recognised by the Sunday Times, in its annual survey, as being one of the Best Places to Live in Britain. The School continued

School ethos Refined over 400 years in the heart of the naturally inspirational Wye Valley, Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools educates girls and boys aged 3 to 18 through a unique combination of single-sex and co-educational environments at the optimum stages of their academic and personal development. Parents seek the best all-round education for their children; they want to feel confident that their sons and daughters are developing to the full their academic talent, self-confidence and social awareness.

Many of the qualities which attract parents to Monmouth School for Boys also draw men and women of great dedication and ability to teach here. Staff are encouraged to explore enthusiasms in and out of the classroom and to develop their own teaching styles within a framework of shared principles: that learning matters, that all members of the community deserve to be treated with care and respect, and that every lesson or activity is a fresh opportunity to awaken interest and develop understanding.

At Monmouth, pupils embark on an educational journey within a distinctive community. Community is a core value of the schools; our founder, William Jones, is the definitive example of the difference one person can make in the wider community. Our pupils are inspired to grow into well rounded, refreshingly grounded but also unbounded young men and women, who excel in their chosen paths and who aspire to make a positive difference to society.

Boarding and day pupils thrive and discover their particular strengths through an impressive selection of academic subjects, outstanding facilities and a vibrant calendar of trips, expeditions, events and shared community projects.

We recognise talent and nurture excellence, providing the best possible springboard for a pupil’s future. You can feel confident that you would be joining a legacy of excellence in education that is renowned both nationally and internationally. The Departments

Maths Department

The department aims to introduce its pupils to as wide a range of mathematical ideas as possible and in such a way that they will develop the confidence necessary to apply these ideas to problems, both inside and outside the classroom. A wide range of teaching methods is employed: whilst most of the subject development is teacher-led, the teaching programmes offer opportunities for practical, computer and investigative work.

Boys in Year 7 are taught in unsetted forms of approximately 20 pupils. Thereafter, the boys are setted according to their ability: we usually have four sets in Year 8 and Year 9 and five sets in Years 10 & 11. At GCSE, we have followed the Edexcel IGCSE syllabus since 2017 and have had much success with approximately 80% of pupils achieving grades 7-9 since the introduction of the 9-1 grading in 2018. About half of the pupils in the Sixth Form choose to study the subject to A level or beyond with the result that there are usually three or four teaching groups in Year 12 and Year 13, including strong Further Maths groups in both years. Since the change to the new linear A level we follow the Edexcel specification for both Maths and Further Maths. Over the last five years there has been almost 100% pass rate in A level Maths and Further Maths and almost 90% of the candidates have gained A*to B grades. Five years ago, we had our record number of A*s: 30 out of 52 for Maths and 10 out of 17 for Further Maths. A large proportion of our Sixth Form pupils progress to university courses with a high mathematical content. The top Further Maths group always contains several pupils with aspirations to read Maths, Engineering or Physical Sciences at leading universities.

The department runs a programme of early morning and lunchtime surgeries to give support to pupils who are encountering short term problems with the subject whilst the Study Support Department employs a numeracy support teacher who works on a one-to-one basis with those pupils who have major conceptual difficulties with the subject.

In recent years, the school has introduced a More Able and Talented programme, which was piloted by the Maths department for the most able pupils in Years 7 to 10. Pupils also participate in the team and individual National Maths Challenges with great success.

Currently, the department has six full time teachers, three of whom have other major whole school responsibilities, and one part time teacher. In September 2013, the department moved to the fantastic, modern William Jones building: the Maths department is housed on the top floor with one more classroom on the floor below so that all teachers have their own rooms.

The Science Department

The Science Department is housed in a purpose built Science Block. The Heads of Biology, Chemistry and Physics work together to promote the teaching of Science at all levels. In Years 7 and 8 boys are taught Combined Science with separate Sciences being taught from Year 9. We teach the EDEXCEL IGCSE and most boys take the separate Science IGCSEs. Towards the end of their course some boys may be steered towards the Dual Award Science as an option.

The department has followed the AQA A Level syllabus for many years. Physics is a popular subject at A Level, with around 30% of students in Year 12 studying the subject.

The Physics Department has an outstanding record of examination success at IGCSE and A Level with a high proportion of boys choosing to read Science or Engineering subjects at universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Each member of staff has his or her own laboratory and enjoys full support from a team of technicians, clearers and cleaners.

Vision Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools offer a unique and innovative system of education, known as the Monmouth Model. The family of schools that makes up the Monmouth Model aspires towards national and international respect for delivering an exceptional all-round education for girls and boys. The schools are renowned for developing talented young men and women with a refreshingly grounded attitude to life and a belief in the importance of community.

Purpose To provide an inspirational educational journey for girls and boys aged 3 to 18. To develop rounded, grounded and self-confident young men and women equipped to excel in their chosen paths, who aspire to make a positive difference to society.

Philosophy Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools know that parents seek the best all-round education for their children. They also want their sons and daughters to be self-confident, socially assured and to become a force for good. The schools fulfil these aspirations by providing the perfect balance of single-sex and co-education combined with inter- school collaboration throughout the unique family of schools. The model provides co- education between the ages of 3-7 in the pre-prep school. Between the ages of 7 and 16, pupils benefit from the best single-sex teaching tailored to differences in their maturity and interests, which is combined with joint social and co-curricular activities . Then, at Sixth Form, the schools offer co-educational teaching and extensive joint social and co-curricular activities, alongside single-sex pastoral care in their ‘home’ school, to ensure a successful transition from school to university life. The Monmouth Model continued

Values The schools’ shared values are at the heart of everything they do. • They define the behaviours that everyone is expected to engage with and live by. • They drive performance as individuals, as teams and as an organisation. • They inspire the way the schools work together. • They inspire the way the schools communicate and present themselves, both inward and outward facing.

Community Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools value the community and recognise the difference that an individual can make in benefiting others, as exemplified by their founder William Jones.

Integrity The schools act with integrity in everything they do, believing in honesty and a principled approach, with ethical and social responsibility.

Opportunity The schools believe in the power of opportunity for pupils, and inspire them to participate in a wide range of academic subjects, interests and activities. The Role of the Haberdashers’ Company

The family of Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools is supported by the Haberdashers’ Company, one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies of London. The schools owe their existence to William Jones, a liveryman of the Haberdashers’ Company, who bequeathed funds to establish a school in 1614. The Company acts as trustee of the William Jones’s Schools Foundation (charity no. 525616) and the endowment from the foundation enables the schools to offer an excellent education and to continually improve their facilities, whilst ensuring competitive fees and a high level of bursarial and other fee support.

Education is of prime importance to the Company. The Haberdashers' Company supports pupils, past and present, of the Company's eleven schools, other educational establishments and young people in education. Haberdashers’ Schools, in both the independent and maintained sectors, are of the highest national standard academically and prepare pupils for a full life. The Company is involved in the appointment and training of all of its school governors. The Master and other members of the Company also take a great individual interest and pride in the schools, visiting regularly on Deputation Days, Speech Days and other important occasions.

The Location

The Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools are very much a part of the traditional market town from which they take their name. Monmouth, or Trefynwy in Welsh, meaning ‘town on the Monnow’, is situated on the South Welsh and English border in the beautiful Wye Valley, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The town has excellent road links to Cardiff, Bristol and Cheltenham, all within an hour’s drive, and London can be reached in just over two hours, by road and rail. The stunning mountains within the Brecon Beacons National Park and historical woodland of the Forest of Dean are also within easy reach and pupils make full use of all the environment has to offer.

Day pupils are drawn from a wide catchment area made possible by good transport links and the schools’ extensive bus service. Safeguarding and Child Protection

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

All candidates are asked to read the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and the Recruitment, Selection and Disclosure Policy.

All candidates should complete the school’s application form when applying for this role.
