The Departments Maths Department The department aims to introduce its pupils to as wide a range of mathematical ideas as possible and in such a way that they will develop the confidence necessary to apply these ideas to problems, both inside and outside the classroom. A wide range of teaching methods is employed: whilst most of the subject development is teacher-led, the teaching programmes offer opportunities for practical, computer and investigative work. Boys in Year 7 are taught in unsetted forms of approximately 20 pupils. Thereafter, the boys are setted according to their ability: we usually have four sets in Year 8 and Year 9 and five sets in Years 10 & 11. At GCSE, we have followed the Edexcel IGCSE syllabus since 2017 and have had much success with approximately 80% of pupils achieving grades 7-9 since the introduction of the 9-1 grading in 2018. About half of the pupils in the Sixth Form choose to study the subject to A level or beyond with the result that there are usually three or four teaching groups in Year 12 and Year 13, including strong Further Maths groups in both years. Since the change to the new linear A level we follow the Edexcel specification for both Maths and Further Maths. Over the last five years there has been almost 100% pass rate in A level Maths and Further Maths and almost 90% of the candidates have gained A*to B grades. Five years ago, we had our record number of A*s: 30 out of 52 for Maths and 10 out of 17 for Further Maths. A large proportion of our Sixth Form pupils progress to university courses with a high mathematical content. The top Further Maths group always contains several pupils with aspirations to read Maths, Engineering or Physical Sciences at leading universities. The department runs a programme of early morning and lunchtime surgeries to give support to pupils who are encountering short term problems with the subject whilst the Study Support Department employs a numeracy support teacher who works on a one-to-one basis with those pupils who have major conceptual difficulties with the subject. In recent years, the school has introduced a More Able and Talented programme, which was piloted by the Maths department for the most able pupils in Years 7 to 10. Pupils also participate in the team and individual National Maths Challenges with great success. Currently, the department has six full time teachers, three of whom have other major whole school responsibilities, and one part time teacher. In September 2013, the department moved to the fantastic, modern William Jones building: the Maths department is housed on the top floor with one more classroom on the floor below so that all teachers have their own rooms. The Heads of Biology, Chemistry and Physics work together to promote the teaching of Science at all levels. In Years 7 and 8 boys are taught Combined Science with separate Sciences being taught from Year 9. We teach the EDEXCEL IGCSE and most boys take the separate Science IGCSEs. Towards the end of their course some boys may be steered towards the Dual Award Science as an option. The department has followed the AQA A Level syllabus for many years. Physics is a popular subject at A Level, with around 30% of students in Year 12 studying the subject. The Physics Department has an outstanding record of examination success at IGCSE and A Level with a high proportion of boys choosing to read Science or Engineering subjects at universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
