    Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment.

Part II covers the Monocotyledons and completes the preliminary edition of the Checklist, which we hope will prove useful not only in itself but also as a first step toward a new manual for the identification of the Area’s flora. Such a manual is needed to replace the long- outdated and out-of-print Flora of the District of Columbia and Vicinity of Hitchcock and Standley, published in 1919. In the preparation of this part, as with Part I, Shetler has been responsible for the taxonomy and nomenclature and Orli for the database. As with the first part, we are distributing this second part in preliminary form, so that it can be used, criticized, and updated while the two parts are being readied for publication as a single volume.

    M acroflora y macrofauna de los sistemas estuarinos de Michoacán, México Andrea Raz-Guzmán Posgrado en Ciencias del Mar y Limnología. UNAM Resumen Los sistemas estuarinos michoacanos han sido estudiados escasamente. Por esto se muestrearon 22 sistemas para registrar la macroflora y macrofauna, registros nuevos, especies bajo algún estatus, especies de importancia comercial y su distribución espacial. Las especies recolectadas y las registradas en la literatura sumaron 123 (29 plantas, 94 animales). Las familias mejor representadas fueron Cyperaceae, Palaemonidae, Gobiidae y Carangidae. Los registros nuevos incluyen 29 especies de plantas, 7 de insectos, 2 de crustáceos, 15 de moluscos y 3 de peces. Las especies bajo algún estatus son Rhizophora mangle , Avicennia germinans , Conocarpus erectus , Laguncularia racemosa y Poecilia butleri . Phragmites australis , Typha domingensis , Macrobrachium hobbsi y M. tenellum presentaron las distribuciones más amplias. Los sistemas con más especies fueron Santa Ana, Salinas del Padre, Nexpa y Coahuayana. Diez especies de plantas y Stramonita biserialis son ornamentales. Los coleópteros, hemípteros y odonatos son depredadores de larvas de mosquitos y, junto con Macrobrachium digueti , son bioindicadores de la calidad del agua. Litopenaeus vannamei , M. americanum y 19 especies de peces sostienen pesquerías importantes, mientras que Callinectes arcuatus , C. toxotes y Cardisoma crassum se comercializan localmente. Melanoides tuberculata es introducido, oportunista, hospedero de tremátodos parásitos, no Ciencia Nicolaita # 76 46 Abril de 2019 Macroflora y macrofauna de los sistemas estuarinos de Michoacán, México registrado para Michoacán y no regulado en el país. La riqueza de especies estuarinas en Michoacán es marcadamente baja en respuesta a sus lagunas y esteros pequeños y oligo-mesohalinos y la resultante heterogeneidad ambiental baja, así como al reducido número de estudios enfocados específicamente a los sistemas estuarinos.

[email protected] ABSTRACT Field studies at the Lawther - Deer Park Prairie Preserve, an area of approximately 21 ha (51 acres) of the Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes vegetation area, have resulted in a description of the vegetation associations and an annotated checklist of the vascular flora. Six plant com- munity associations occur on the property: (1) the Upper Texas Coast Ingleside Sandy Wet Prairie; (2) Eastern Gamagrass - Switchgrass - Yellow Indiangrass Herbaceous Vegetation; (3) Gulf Cordgrass Herbaceous Vegetation; (4) Texas Gulf Coast Live Oak - Sugarberry Forest; (5) Little Bluestem - Slender Bluestem - Big Bluestem Herbaceous Vegetation, and (6) Natural Depressional Ponds. The checklist includes 407 species belonging to 247 genera and 86 families. Forty-six species are non-native. The best-represented families (with species number following) are Poaceae (84), Asteraceae (68), Cyperaceae (33), and Fabaceae (19). West Gulf Coastal Plain (eastern Texas and western Louisiana) endemics include Helenium drummondii, Liatris acidota, Oenothera lindheimeri, and Rudbeckia texana. One Texas endemic, Chloris texensis, a Species of Greater Conservation Need, is present.

HALPERN Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University, Corvallis 97331 ABSTRACT Twelve plant associations are recognized and described for montane meadows of Sequoia National Park based on 81 relevês. Three major groups are defined by growth- form dominants: mixed forb and grass associations, Carex and Scirpus associations, and Eleocharis associations. Major environmental factors influencing vegetation dis- tribution include: I) a complex moisture gradient incorporating water depth and movement, and 2) site exposure and shading. Monitoring of water wells indicates that seasonal fluctuations of the water table are important in structuring the vegetation. Montane meadows, a common feature of Sequoia National Park in the southern Sierra Nevada of California, punctuate a landscape dominated by mixed conifer forest. Scenic vistas, a rich and colorful flora, proximity to Giant Sequoia groves, and accessibility result in disproportionate public visitation to these sites. Nevertheless, mon- tane meadows in the Park and in the southern Sierra Nevada in general have been poorly described. Studies of montane meadows and their environmental controls were initiated as part of a comprehensive study of riparian ecosys- tems and the interactions between terrestrial (forest and meadow) and stream systems in Sequoia National Park. As hydric sites, these montane meadows may be grouped functionally with forest riparian systems. Stream channels, overland flows, and pooled water are common. Plant community physiognomy, composition, and distri- bution reflect strong seasonal and spatial hydrologic patterns. Disturbance history and microenvironmental characteristics also influence vegetation composition and structure.

    APPENDIX E Rare Plant Survey of Jekyll Island, Georgia, Fall 2007 Greg Krakow, GA-DNR, WRD, Nongame Conservation Section This survey has been conducted to locate plant populations important for conservation of Jekyll Island’s flora. Plants considered include rare plants listed on the special concern plant list1 produced by Georgia Nongame Conservation Section. Search emphasis was placed on island locations with natural habitat suitable for special concern species known from Georgia barrier islands. Another aspect of the study was to observe NatureServe ecological systems and plant associations2 supporting rare species populations. The effect of exotic pest species on the island’s flora was also considered. Three survey trips were made to Jekyll in August, September and December 2007. Botanical nomenclature generally follows Weakley3. Common names for taxa can be found at NatureServe Explorer4. I would like to thank the many people in GA-DNR, Jekyll Island Authority and The NatureServe Network who helped with this effort.     Stephanie Chen Indicators for Black Rails May 12 2008 Wetland plant species composition as an indicator of California black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus) presence in the Sierra Foothills Stephanie Chen Abstract The rate of global wetland loss is concerning as these habitats provide important ecosystem functions and habitat for flora and fauna. Further understanding of plant communities that comprise palustrine emergent wetlands is important for habitat management and conservation for wetland birds, especially since the discovery of state threatened California black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus) in these wetlands near Marysville, California. No comprehensive vegetation survey of the wetlands black rails occupy has been conducted and a more detailed survey of plant species composition is likely to improve the ability to characterize habitat quality for black rails. This study aims to: 1) identify the plants of emergent wetlands in the Sierra foothills 2) determine whether plant communities differ between wetlands of different geomorphology, elevation, slope, water source and between wetlands that are grazed versus ungrazed and 3) determine whether U.S. Fish and Wildlife wetland indicator categories can be used to predict black rail presence. Contrary to our predictions, wetland plants were not homogeneous within groups with the same abiotic variables. However, plant composition did show a trend along an elevation gradient. Multivariate analysis of black rail occupancy and proportion of wetland plant indicator categories revealed no positive correlation between the two. While no significant trends were found other than elevation, only 32% of variance in the data is explained by the environmental variables looked at in this study and further examination of other factors that drive habitat quality such as soil characteristics should be explored.

Eleven refuges in South Carolina and Georgia in the Savannah and South Carolina Lowcountry refuge complexes were surveyed in an effort to catalogue all plant species in each refuge. All rare plant species encountered were mapped, and for each population its size, habitat characters, and threats determined. Floristic diversity ranges widely across the refuges, from a low of 75 at Wolf Island, to a high of 1100 at Savannah NWR. Five At-risk plant species were recorded; these were found on three refuges, Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin, Savannah, and Waccamaw. Populations of state-tracked rare plant species were found at all eleven refuges.
