The present work represents the first part of a series of papers studying the type material of the New World Scarabaeinae deposited in all major museums of the world. The main goals of this series are to locate the whereabouts of those types, designate, when appropriate, lectotypes and neotypes, and illustrate those speci- mens and their labels so that it will be possible for anyone interested to identify species already described and recognize new ones. As a start to this series, we present information on and illustrate the type material of the nominal species- group taxa proposed by the German entomologist Adolf Schmidt in the genus Canthon Hoffmannsegg, 1817, in two papers published in 1920 and 1922. Deposited in five European museums (Berlin, Dresden, Müncheberg, Brussels, and Stock- holm), we were able to find the type specimens of all but one of the 51 names firstly established as new species or new varieties by Schmidt. Of these 50 names, we designate lectotypes for 38. Schmidt also proposed three nominal species in Canthon as replacement names – C. -

Price Department of Biological Sciences Salisbury University This document is a pictorial reference of Maryland Scarabaeoidea genera (and sometimes species) that was created to expedite the identification of Maryland Scarabs. Our current understanding of Maryland Scarabs comes from “An Annotated Checklist of the Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) of Maryland” (Staines 1984). Staines reported 266 species and subspecies using literature and review of several Maryland Museums. Dr. Price and her research students are currently conducting a bioinventory of Maryland Scarabs that will be used to create a “Taxonomic Guide to the Scarabaeoidea of Maryland”. This will include dichotomous keys to family and species based on historical reports and collections from all 23 counties in Maryland. This document should be cited as: Hagadorn, M.A. and D.L. Forty six of the 133 recognized worldwide Hemiptera families are preyed upon with generally more prey records for female than male robber flies. Potential explanations for robber flies, in particular females, preying upon Hemiptera are discussed. Numbers of Hemiptera prey are examined based on their associated families, genera and species. Hemiptera prey are also discussed in relation to robber fly subfamilies and genera. New records of Hemiptera prey are presented and compared with prey records in the Database. Traditionally the Hemiptera are divided into two suborders, the Heteroptera and Homoptera, although some taxonomists believe that the Coleorrhyncha, Stenorrhyncha and Auchenorryncha also are suborders. -

To assess their distribution in North America, I created a checklist of over 300 beetle species known to colonize dung (Chapter 2). To assess the affect of habitat and location on dung beetle diversity, I conducted sampling at Purple Springs Grazing Reserve and Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park (Chapter 3). Each habitat and location was dominated by different species for both sampling years. The affect of bait treatment and age on the attractiveness of the coprophagous insect community was assessed using fresh and frozen dung baits, with frozen baits being more attractive for the first three days (Chapter 4). -

V8V lX4 ABSTRACT The robber flies of a small area of grassland at Penticton, B.C. were studied; information on 21 species in 17 genera was gathered during ten years of sporadic collecting. The habitat, dominated by the bunchgrass, Festuca scabrella and the shrub, Chrysothamnus nauseosus, is briefly described. Flight periods, data on prey, and zoogeographic notes are included. INTRODUCTION Except for a few scattered locality records in the literature, no information on the robber flies (Diptera: Asilidae) of British Columbia has been published. Because these flies are a significant component of the predatory insect fauna of the province's grasslands, I undertook a simple study of the species present in a small area adjacent to my parents' property near Penticton. I was interested in examining the temporal distribution of the species, in addition to documenting their occurrence. Such basic natural history studies are important, because robber fly assemblages in B.C. grasslands vary considerably depending on habitat details, and these habitats are rapidly disappearing in the Okanagan Valley. THE STUDY SITE Robber flies were collected in a small area of native grassland at 430 m elevation on the Penticton Indian Reserve at the southern boundary of the West Bench Irrigation District (490 29.5' N x 1190 37.5'W) (Figs. 1,2). The area is approximately 200 m x 300 m, bordered on the north by irrigated gardens and orchards, and with a dirt track running east and west near the southern edge of the rectangle. -
