Hanhardt Introduction In the summer of 2012, posters reading "MORE GRINDR=FEWER GAY BARS” appeared taped to signposts in numerous gay neighborhoods in North America—from Greenwich Village in New York City to Davie Village in Vancouver, Canada.1 The signs expressed a brewing fear: that the popularity of online lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) social media—like Grindr, which connects gay men based on proximate location—would soon replace the bricks-and-mortar institutions that had long facilitated LGBTQ community building. -

MAHONEY* HEATHER BRYDIE HARRIS** INTRODUCTION In a closed-door forum on July 11, 2017, United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions invoked Martin Luther King, Jr. in a speech given to and in support of the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), an anti- LGBT religious freedom group responsible for crafting many early anti- transgender bathroom bills.1 Employing King, Sessions parallels the ra- cial civil rights struggle of the past to the current “important work” of the ADF—by representing a divine moral right that he suggests be pro- tected by the state.2 Besides the personal criticism of Sessions’ civil rights record by Coretta Scott King when he was nominated for federal judgeship in 1986,3 Sessions’ deployment of King seems paradoxical on © 2019 Antron D. -
Bury Your Gays’
. Volume 15, Issue 1 May 2018 Toxic regulation: From TV’s code of practices to ‘#Bury Your Gays’ Kelsey Cameron, University of Pittsburgh, USA Abstract: In 2016, American television killed off many of its queer female characters. The frequency and pervasiveness of these deaths prompted outcry from fans, who took to digital platforms to protest ‘bury your gays,’ the narrative trope wherein queer death serves as a plot device. Scholars and critics have noted the positive aspects of the #BuryYourGays fan campaign, which raised awareness of damaging representational trends and money for the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organization focused on LGBTQ youth. There has been less attention to the ties #BuryYourGays has to toxicity, however. Protests spilled over into ad hominem attacks, as fans wished violence upon the production staff responsible for queer character deaths. Using the death of The 100 character Lexa as a case study, this article argues that we should neither dismiss these toxic fan practices nor reduce them to a symptom of present-day fan entitlement. Rather, we must attend to the history that shapes contemporary antagonisms between producers and queer audiences – a history that dates back to television’s earliest efforts at content regulation. Approaching contemporary fandom through history makes clear that toxic fan practices are not simply a question of individual agency. Longstanding industry structures predispose queer fans and producers to toxic interactions. This anger was both general and particular, grounded in long-simmering dissatisfaction with TV’s treatment of queer women and catalyzed by a wave of character deaths during the 2016 television season. -

Reid Recognizing the importance of context with regard to youth agency, this study explores how 8 Black LGBTQ+ youth understand their practices of agency in ballroom culture, an underground Black LGBTQ+ culture. Ballroom was chosen as the backdrop for this scholarly endeavor because it allowed for the study of the phenomenon — Black LGBTQ+ youth agency — in a space where the youth might feel more able to be themselves, especially given that the 2019 Black LGBTQ+ youth report published by the Human Rights Campaign revealed that only 35% of Black LGBTQ+ youth reported being able to “be themselves at school” (Kahn et al., 2019). Thus, instead of asking what is wrong with schools, this study inverted the question to explore what is “right” about ballroom culture in which Black LGBTQ+ youth might practice different kinds of agency due to their intersectional racial and LGBTQ+ identities being recognized and celebrated. Framed by the youth’s understanding of their own agency across different contexts, my research illuminates the complex interrelationships between youth agency, social identity, and context. Extending the literature on youth agency and Black LGBTQ+ youth, the findings of this study suggest that in many ways these youth are always already practicing agency to work toward different ends, and that these different end goals are greatly mediated by the contexts in which they find themselves. -

Lundy A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In Women’s and Gender Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2019, Jess D. Lundy Abstract Against a tense socio-political backdrop of white supremacy, intensifying pressures of neoliberal fiscal austerity, and queer necropolitics, this thesis addresses performance-based activist forms of place-making for urban-based queer, trans, and gender nonconforming communities of colour. Using participant observation and qualitative interviews with pioneering members of Montréal’s Kiki scene and Ottawa’s emerging Waacking community and interpreting my findings through the theoretical lens of queer of colour theory, critical whiteness studies, queer Latinx performance studies and Chicana feminism, I argue that Kiki subculture, which is maintained by pedagogical processes of ‘each one, teach one’, is instrumental in facilitating i) life-affirming queer kinship bonds, (ii) alternative ways to simultaneously embody and celebrate non- normative gender expression with Black, Asian, and Latinx identity, iii) non-capitalist economies of sharing, and iv) hopeful strategies of everyday community activism and resilience to appropriative processes during economic insecurity and necropolitical turmoil. ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge the members of Montréal’s Kiki scene and Ottawa’s Waacking founder for their willingness to participate in this study despite the understandable reflex to safe-guard their own. The fandom is known for its diversity, as most in the fandom were either queer and/or female. Primarily, however, the fandom was infamous for a subsection of fans, antis, who performed online harassment, including blackmailing, stalking, sending death threats and child porn to other fans, and abusing the cast and crew. Their motivation was primarily shipping, the act of wanting two characters to enter a romantic relationship. Those who opposed their chosen ship were targets of harassment, despite their shared identity markers of female and/or queer. Inspired by ethnographically and autoethnography informed methods, I performed a survey of the Voltron: Legendary Defender fandom about their experiences with harassment and their feelings over the show’s universally panned conclusion. In implementing my research, I prioritized only using data given to me, a form of ethical consideration on how to best represent the trauma of others. Unfortunately, in performing this research, I became a target of harassment and altered my research trajectory. In response, I collected the various threats against me and used them to analyze online fandom harassment and the motivations of antis. -

Maybe, then, I will always be just an actor.”— Scott Turner Schofield, “Are We There Yet?” “What makes us so confident that we know what’s real?”—Jamison Green, Becoming a Visible Man Acting Cis Traditional actor training espouses “bodily unity,” or unobstructed access to all parts of the physiological (and expectedly able) body; anything else would be what Jerzy Grotowski calls “biological chaos.”1 A focus on bodily unity in actor training implies that an alternate, dysphoric, or oth- erwise non-normative embodied experience is “chaotic”—an obstacle to overcome, unhealthy and unwhole—and that embodied disconnections signify failure or lack. This attitude toward disjointedness, when applied to transgender embodiment, infers that trans people are nothing more than broken cisgender people.2 But the trans “whole” body offers an alternative conception of “wholeness,” one with empty spaces creating a fragmented human form. For trans men, that fragmentation localizes around the chest and pelvis, but the empty spaces that emerge there create healthier and more peaceful versions of embodiment for many trans people. -

Lesbian Feelings and Fandoms: Carmilla and Affect in Contemporary Lesbian Fandom by Sneha Shilip Kumar A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Film Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2020, Sneha Shilip Kumar Abstract My thesis explores the contemporary lesbian web series as being similar to fanfiction and its fandom as an affective community built on a set of inclusions and exclusions. My case study is Carmilla (Canada, Spencer Maybee 2014-2016), a YouTube web series shot in vlog format, and its lesbian fandom. I argue that Carmilla challenges the genres of the gothic and lesbian vampire in ways similar to fanfiction. Building on the work of fan studies scholars Katrin Döveling and Louisa Stein, I propose that affective bonds are created between Carmilla fans through various kinds of online activities and these flows of affect are influenced by the race and location of fans. Lucy Watson 25th September 2019 i Abstract In the 21st century, celebrity culture is increasingly pervasive. Existing research on how people (particularly women) read celebrity indicates that celebrity media is consumed for pleasure, as a way to engage in ‘safe’ gossip amongst imagined, as well as real, communities about standards of morality, and as a way to understand and debate social and cultural behavioural standards. The celebrities we read about engage us in a process of cultural identity formation, as we identify and disidentify with those whom we consume. Celebrities are, as the adage goes, ‘just like us’ – only richer, more talented, or perhaps better looking. But what about when celebrities are not ‘just like us’? Despite relatively recent changes in the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) life in the media, the world of celebrity is an overwhelmingly heterosexual one. -

0 15-08-2017 AUDREY WORKINGS OF POWER IN THE 100: LINDELAUF PARADOXES IN POST-APOCALYPTIC SOCIETIES 1 Abstract This study is an attempt to determine what role power plays in post-apocalyptic audio-visual culture and what influence it has on the nature of the dystopian post-apocalyptic film genre. The emergence of post-apocalypticism in American popular culture in the 21st century has led to a projection of our collective hopes and fears onto film worlds. The empty canvas of a world without ideologies, law, governments, or religion allows for a complete re-imagining of social life. The American dystopian post-apocalyptic science fiction drama series The 100 (2014 –) is used as a case study. This thesis examines the way in which power operates in relation to politics and gender in three societies within its fictional world, using the theories and ideas of Michel Foucault (1926 – 1984). Said collective hopes and fears are represented simultaneously in the paradoxical roots of these communities. The society of the Mountain Men seems to be based on ‘contaminated purity’ when looking at their culture, heritage and physicality, the society of the Grounder Clans appears to have its roots in ‘female masculinity’ with an emphasis on violence, and the society of the Sky People gives the impression of ‘civilized primitiveness’, highlighting continuous surveillance. Since the Sky People are implicitly divided in the Arkadians and the Hundred, they are the more complex community and are therefore explored in further detail. They are also the ones that transcend the other two societies in their social progressivity.
