Theseus, The Duke of Athens, is arranging his marriage to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, whom he has just defeated in battle. But first he has to judge a matrimonial dispute. Egeus wants his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius, but she wants to marry Lysander. Egeus claims Lysander has bewitched his daughter and, in accordance with ancient Athenian law, demands that unless she complies with her father’s wishes and marries Demetrius, she must become a nun or be put to death. Theseus gives her three days to decide and after briefly considering their options, Hermia and Lysander elope to the nearby woods - but not before disclosing their plans to her childhood friend Helena, who is desperately in love with Demetrius. Meanwhile, a bunch of tradesmen, referred to as the mechanicals, are rehearsing a show for the Duke’s marriage. Like all amateur theatricals they have their ham, in this case it is Bottom the Weaver. As Lysander notes, “The course of true love never did run smooth”, but nei- ther do Shakespearean plots, for in the woods the lovers fall under the spell cast by Oberon, King of the Fairies, who is in dispute with Titania, Queen of the Fairies. -

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Character Descriptions Human Court Theseus - Duke of Athens, recently returned from conquering the Amazons, a race of warrior women and is about to marry the conquered Amazon Queen Hippolyta. Lysander - Young nobleman of Athens. In love with Hermia. Hermia’s father is against her marrying him, he persuades Hermia to run away from home & family into the forest. Demetrius – A young nobleman of Athens. In the past he acted as if he loved Helena, but after Helena fell in love with him, he changed his mind and having the approval of Egeus, he pursues Hermia. (But she’s not interested) Egeus - An Athenian upper-class respected gentleman who wants his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius, his choice for her. Philostrate - Theseus’s Master of the Revels (party planner) who is responsible for organizing the entertainment for the Duke’s marriage celebration. Hippolyta - The legendary Queen of the Amazons engaged to marry Theseus. Hermia - Egeus’s daughter. Both Demetrius and Lysander are in love with her. She is in love with Lysander. Very strong-willed and independent. Helena - A good friend of Hermia’s and is in love with Demetrius. She tends to be more self-pitying and puts herself in dangerous and humiliating situations, running after Demetrius through the forest even though he wants nothing to do with her. Fairy Court Puck – (AKA Robin Goodfellow) A mischievous fairy who delights in playing pranks on mortals; he is Oberon’s servant. He has a connection not only to the fairy and human worlds of the play, but also to the world of the audience. -

Our version is very close to the original in terms of plot, characters and narrative. We have added a short introduction by a narra- tor and Puck and have combined some of the minor fairy characters into the part of Fairy. Theseus, the duke of Athens, is preparing for his marriage to Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, with a four- day festival of entertainment. He commissions his Master of the Revels, Philostrate (who in our version is Puck in disguise) to find suitable amusements for the occasion. Egeus, an Athenian nobleman, marches into Theseus’s court with his daughter, Hermia, and two young men, Demetrius and Lysander. -

Photo by Angus McBean INTRODUCTION It does not feel too big a statement to say that the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016 is a once in a lifetime event. The legacy of this remarkable playwright’s work is felt around the world and in 2016 we have the opportunity to celebrate an inheritance that really does belong to all of us. I was intrigued to learn that in 1916 the Drama League of America produced a booklet that invited schools and colleges across the United States to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death using drama, music and dance. The text they chose to centre their activities around was A Midsummer Night’s Dream and they threw the gauntlet down to teachers and students to place that text at the heart of their schools and sing, dance and act their way through the year. In 2016, the Royal Shakespeare Company is also choosing A Midsummer Night’s Dream as the inspiration for our 400th anniversary celebrations. We are producing a nationwide tour of the play, in partnership with amateur companies, regional theatres and schools. Overton 2020 Abstract A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare is a comedy about love’s challenges, dreams and magic. The play was presented in the Thurber Theatre located in the Drake Performance and Events Center at The Ohio State University with performances that ran November 15 through 22, 2019. This production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was directed by Associate Professor Kevin McClatchy, with scenic design by MFA Design candidate Cade Sikora, lighting design by undergraduate Andrew Pla, and sound design by Program 60 student Lee Williams. McClatchy decided to place the play in the 1920s because he wished to emphasize the societal changes following World War I. Important themes of post-war World War I were: women becoming more educated, the Jazz Age exploding, a persisting division of classes, and rising surrealism in the visual arts exemplified by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Georgia O’Keeffe and Henri Matisse. My costume design process began in March 2019. My research focus identified the mid-1920s, particularly 1925 America, as a point of reference that aligned with the director’s concept. The four distinct groups of characters and their costumes — the lovers, the upper-class, the fairies and the rude mechanicals — have roots in historical accuracy through the clothing patterns, fabric choices and treatments I have made. -

Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Political Philosophy Nalin Ranasinghe William Shakespeare’s early comedies are marked by the perva- sive presence of twins. Remarkably, this theme extends even to the level of the plays themselves: comedies and tragedies with striking similarities appear on stage at about the same time. While each play in such a dyad conforms to the requirements of its re- spective genre, the presence of a doppelgänger creates irony, and raises questions about the comic or tragic conclusions reached in each play. One such pair is Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Both were written and performed in the mid-1590s, and both raise very similar questions about love, marriage and politics while yet describing exactly opposite—and thus perfectly com- plementary—dramatic trajectories.
