    Now I Know Better BY CATHY CHURCH never earned my dive instructor certification because •1 I’ve only ever wanted to teach photography, not scuba. I am, however, a Professional Association of Diving J Instructors (PADI) limited field specialty instructor. To be that, I needed to be a divemaster, which meant I had get my rescue certification. Rescue was a class I very much wanted to do anyway, even though I had taken it unofficially many, many years ago and have actually rescued several divers in my 45 years of diving. THE EVENT I had a student who wanted to take an underwater photo class with me on my private photo boat, and she brought her son along. The son was a certified diver, but I knew that neither I nor his mother would be able to pay much attention to him while we were engaged in the photography class. So I assigned a dive instructor from my staff to be his buddy. Toward the end of our dive I looked down and saw the son was deeper than we were. Since we were close to our time limit, I became concerned about the possibility he and the instructor were too deep and had been down too long. I got the instructor’s attention and vehemently indicated that he should get the son back to the line for ascent. I turned to my student and started toward the mooring Don’t be complacent or rely too heavily on other divers’ skills. Lean line. Iedereen in de nabije om- geving voelt de rust en de kracht die vanuit zijn kern naar buiten straalt. De veiligheids- duikers staan gereed. Hij is bijna zover om zijn duik naar 150 meter te maken. De rem gaat van de slede en Carlos verdwijnt de diepte in. Met een snelheid van 1.6 meter per seconde gaat hij de duistere diepte tege- moet. Mijn hartslag is hoog. Het is bizar om getuige te zijn van een man die zich vrijwillig naar zo’n diepte laat afzakken. Ik krijg bijna geen adem van de spanning en vind het on- voorstelbaar hoe deze atleet zijn spanning kan loslaten en zich volledig kan focussen op zijn taak. Aan boord wordt de afdaling op de sonar gevolgd en hardop roept Gaby de diepte en tijd. Het is zenuwslopend. Carlos zal zo’n vier minuten onder water zijn, alleen, op zichzelf aangewezen. The original intent was to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the sport of diving by “reaching out” in some special way to improve the sport for everyone. There are many ways to reach out and do something extraordinary for the sport. Most that have been recognized were pioneers who helped develop techniques related to their special areas of expertise. Their contributions have been made in such areas as photography, training, equipment design, publishing, travel, retailing, water safety, exploration and science. Since its inception, the Reaching Out Award has become more than just recognition of these individual achievements; it has become the industry’s HALL OF FAME. These are the leaders and heroes of our sport. They are the ones who have helped make diving what it is today.
