RAILROAD—CARRIERS—CANNOT DO EXPRESS BUSINESS.—Railroad companies, as common carriers, are not authorized to carry on an express business. SAME—SAME—RIGHTS OF EXPRESS COMPANIES.—As such carriers they are bound to provide for those doing an express business over their road reasonable and necessary facilities for such business, and to all upon equal terms. They cannot insist upon the exclusive right to do such business over their lines of road, nor grant such right to one express company to the exclusion of others, but are bound to carry for every one offering to do the same sort of business upon the same terms. EXPRESS COMPANY—RAILROAD REFUSING TO CARRY FOR.—Where an express company had, under special contract, been for many years engaged in that business over the system of roads controlled by defendants, and had built up a large and valuable business, and established valuable connections, all of which would be much depreciated if defendant should be allowed to refuse to further allow it to carry on such business over its line of road, held, that for that reason an injunction restraining such action might be granted. Early Development of Transportation 115 EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ON THE MONONGAHELA RIVER By W. Espy Albig* Although the traffic on the Monongahela River from Brownsville to the Ohio had advanced from the canoe of the Indian and the Kentucky boat of the emigrant of Revolu- tionary times, to a water borne traffic of no mean size in passengers and miscellaneous freight, and to more than a million bushels of coal annually before the Monongahela waterway was improved by the installation of locks and dams late in 1841, yet no records remain of the constantly increasing stream of commerce passing over this route be- tween the east and the west. Here and there remains a fragment from a traveller, a ship builder or a merchant giv- ing a glimpse of the river activity of the later years of the 18th century and the early ones of the 19th century. The Ohio Company early recognized the importance of this waterway, and in 1754 Captain Trent on his way to the forks of the Ohio by Nemacolin's and the Redstone trails, built "The Hangard" at the mouth of Redstone Creek. From April 17th, when he surrendered his works to the French and retreated in canoes up the Monongahela, this avenue became more and more important until the steam railways supplanted the slower traffic by water. The easy navigation of this stream led that man of keen insight, George Washington, into error, when, under date of May 27, 1754, he writes: "This morning Mr. Gist ar- rived from his place, where a detachment of fifty men (French) was seen yesterday. -

The Principal Indian Towns of Western Pennsylvania C. Hale Sipe One cannot travel far in Western Pennsylvania with- out passing the sites of Indian towns, Delaware, Shawnee and Seneca mostly, or being reminded of the Pennsylvania Indians by the beautiful names they gave to the mountains, streams and valleys where they roamed. In a future paper the writer will set forth the meaning of the names which the Indians gave to the mountains, valleys and streams of Western Pennsylvania; but the present paper is con- fined to a brief description of the principal Indian towns in the western part of the state. The writer has arranged these Indian towns in alphabetical order, as follows: Allaquippa's Town* This town, named for the Seneca, Queen Allaquippa, stood at the mouth of Chartier's Creek, where McKees Rocks now stands. In the Pennsylvania, Colonial Records, this stream is sometimes called "Allaquippa's River". The name "Allaquippa" means, as nearly as can be determined, "a hat", being likely a corruption of "alloquepi". This In- dian "Queen", who was visited by such noted characters as Conrad Weiser, Celoron and George Washington, had var- ious residences in the vicinity of the "Forks of the Ohio". In fact, there is good reason for thinking that at one time she lived right at the "Forks". When Washington met her while returning from his mission to the French, she was living where McKeesport now stands, having moved up from the Ohio to get farther away from the French. After Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity, July 4th, 1754, she and the other Indian inhabitants of the Ohio Val- ley friendly to the English, were taken to Aughwick, now Shirleysburg, where they were fed by the Colonial Author- ities of Pennsylvania. -

The Fight in Congress to Prohibit Funding for Indian Sectarian Schools and Its Effects on Montana Gunstream 2 Preface: During winter break of my sophomore and senior years I went on a headlights trip to Browning, MT with Carroll College Campus Ministry. We worked at a De La Salle Blackfeet School, a private catholic school that served kids from fourth through eighth grade. I was inspired by the work they were doing there and from my knowledge it was the only Catholic Indian school in Montana and this perplexed me—it was my knowledge that the original Catholic missions had schools on the reservations. In April of my sophomore year I went to Dr. Jeremy Johnson’s office to discuss writing an honors thesis on the relationship between the government and Indian reservation schools in Montana. He was very excited about the idea and told me to start reading up on the subject. I started reading on the history of the Catholic missions in Montana. I was interested by the stories of the nuns and priests who came a long ways to start these missions and serve the Native Americans. And I was interested in how prominent the Catholic Church was in the development of Montana. So I asked myself, what happened to them? The authors of the books answered this question only briefly: the federal government cut funding for these schools between 1896 and 1900, and the mission schools could barely survive without these funds. Eventually, some faster than others, they withered away. -

It is not a folk tradition that depends upon sales to tourists; ofLouisiana. rather it survives simply because many require small boats for their livelihood. Boats are found throughout the state, although in north Louisiana there was never a strong folk boat tradition, for the area was settled by Anglo southerners who had little need for boats. In south Louisiana, however, where there was always a close relationship between man and water, boat traditions survive because the craft are needed to exploit marine environments. Adams' Express and Independent Mail by Calvet M . Hahn On May 2, 1840, 35-year old Alvin Adams joined with P .C. Burke to ad- vertise in the Boston Notion the opening of a new People's Express that would run via the Stonington steamboats to New York, beginning May 4th . The timing of this new service, which was to be a direct competitor to the Harnden Express, was propitious . The Great Western was sailing to England May 9th and Boston merchants might want to get goods and drafts on board . The initial advertisement gives to concept that was to dominate Adams' Express during its initial years . It reads : PEOPLES EXPRESS BURKE & CO'S NEW YORK AND BOSTON PACKAGE EXPRESS Office No 9 Court Street Boston and William st .' corner of Wall at, New York . The subscribers will go through in person DAILY, via Ston- ington and take charge of any Business that may be entrusted to their care . Bank Notes, Specie and all kinds of Small Packages will be forwarded by the Steamboat Train and delivered at any part of the City free of extra charge .
