1. Why did the Separatists establish a colony in North America?

Separatists – what Pilgrims were originally known as— these were people who wanted to separate from the Church of England. They were persecuted for their beliefs since it was different then the Church. In order to maintain their culture but also practice their religion freely, they left Europe to start their own colony.

2. What was the purpose of the Compact?

Pilgrims created a framework for their government before leaving the ship—they knew that once they went ashore, there would be no one to govern them. It was important to them that they, the people in the colony, governed themselves. **Representative government – make decisions for the common good. **

“Still, the Pilgrims’ desire to warship freely sent an important precedent, or example for others to follow in the future.”

It was important that the people who lived in the colony were able to follow whatever religion they wanted—no established religion. Page 81

Geographic features influenced economy—soil was rocky and not good for farming BUT forests were full of trees.
