E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Sandelzhausen is an Early/Middle Miocene (Mammal Neogene zone MN5) fossil site near Mainburg, S Germany, and despite its small size it harbors a rich fossil record. Hundreds of fossil continental mollusks, almost exclusively pulmo- nates snails, were recovered during the excavations, but never received due attention by researchers. Here, the second part of a formal taxonomical treatment of the fossil pulmonates from Sandelzhausen is presented, dealing with the superfam- ilies Succineoidea, Testacelloidea and Helicoidea, and including the description of a new hygromiid species. The follow- ing species were found in the material: Succinea minima (Succineidae); Palaeoglandina sp. (Spiraxidae); Testacella zellii (Testacellidae); Klikia cf. coarctata (Elonidae); Cepaea cf. eversa, Cepaea cf. sylvestrina and Tropidomphalus cf. incras- satus (Helicidae); ?Helicodonta sp. and Helicodontidae indet. (Helicodontidae); Leucochroopsis kleinii and Urticicola perchtae sp. nov. (Hygromiidae). Lea, 1834) Family: Succineidae Common name: Blunt Ambersnail Identification Length: 6-14 mm Whorls: 3 This ambersnail is intermediate in size. It has shallower sutures and flatter whorls, giving it a more streamlined look than Catinella vermeta. It also has a taller aperture, about 2/3 the total shell length. The basal margin of its aperture may appear nearly flat, although this may vary to more rounded. The animal is stippled with small black spots, which form bands on top of the head, including a stripe to each antennae. Ecology Oxyloma retusum is often found in damp fields or shoreline habitats, sometimes at high densities in the warmer months. It may be seen crawling in muddy areas or on wetland plants (Hubricht 1985). Along a small lake in Maryland, this species was eating mostly dead plants in the spring, but both live and dead plants in summer and fall (Örstan, 2006). In Maryland a few individuals of this species survive the winter, then grow until the end of June when the larger animals die off following an initial mating period (Örstan, 2006). The pallial cavity in the Succineidae family is characterized as Heterurethra. There, the primary ureter initiates at the kidney, near the pericardium, and runs transversely until the rectum. The secondary ureter travels a short distance along with the rectum. Then, it borders the mantle edge, passes the pneumostome and follows to the anterior region of the pallial cavity. The secondary ureter, then, folds in an 180o angle and becomes the tertiary ureter. It follows on the direction of the pneumostome and opens immediately before the respiratory orifice, on its right side, by the excretory pore. Key words. Omalonyx, Succinea, Heterurethra Resumo. Recaracterização da cavidade palial de Succineidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda). A cavidade palial na família Succineidae é caracterizada como Heterurethra. Neste, o ureter primário inicia-se no rim próximo ao pericárdio e corre transversalmente até o reto. O ureter secundário percorre uma pequena distância junto ao reto. Em seguida, este margeia a borda do manto, passa do pneumostômio e segue adiante até a região anterior da cavidade palial. O ureter secundário, então, se dobra em um ângulo de 180o e passa a ser denominado ureter terciário. Este se encaminha na direção do pneumostômio e se abre imediatamente anterior ao orifício respiratório, no lado direito deste, pelo poro excretor. -

This species belongs to Suc- cineidae, a family comprising a few representatives in South America. In this work, we provide the first record for the species from Misiones Province, Argentina. Previous records available for Omalonyx in Misiones were identified to the genus level. We examined morphological characteristics of the reproductive system and used DNA sequences from cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene for species-specific identification. These new distributional data contribute to consolidate the knowledge of the molluscan fauna in northeastern Argentina. Abstract: Brazil is a megadiverse country for many (if not most) animal taxa, harboring a signifi- cant portion of Earth’s biodiversity. Still, the Brazilian land snail fauna is not that diverse at first sight, comprising around 700 native species. Most of these species were described by European and North American naturalists based on material obtained during 19th-century expeditions. Ear- ly 20th century malacologists, like Philadelphia-based Henry A. Pilsbry (1862–1957), also made remarkable contributions to the study of land snails in the country. From that point onwards, however, there was relatively little interest in Brazilian land snails until very recently. The last de- cade sparked a renewed enthusiasm in this branch of malacology, and over 50 new Brazilian spe- cies were revealed. An astounding portion of the known species (circa 45%) presently belongs to the superfamily Orthalicoidea, a group of mostly tree snails with typically large and colorful shells. It has thus been argued that the missing majority would be comprised of inconspicuous microgastropods that live in the undergrowth. In fact, several of the species discovered in the last decade belong to these “low-profile” groups and many come from scarcely studied regions or environments, such as caverns and islands. -

Distribution: Only two populations known: 1) near Kanab in Kane County, UT; 2) at Vasey's Paradise in Grand Canyon National Park (75.3 km downstream of Glen Canyon Dam). Potential is likely restricted to western Navajo Nation; including tributaries of Colorado and Little Colorado Rivers, springs on Echo Cliffs, and creeks north and west of Navajo Mountain. Habitat: Restricted to perennially wet soil surfaces or shallow standing water and decaying plant matter associated with springs and seep-fed marshes near sandstone or limestone cliffs. Vegetative cover is necessary; cattails, monkeyflower, or watercress are present at the two known locations, but wetland grasses and sedges may suffice. Similar Species: other Succineid snails; see Pilsbry, 1948. A total of 64 species was documented accounting for 60 new county or District records. Paralaoma servilis (Shuttleworth) and Zonitoides nitidus (Müller) are recorded for the first time from Virginia and Euconulus polygyratus (Pilsbry) is confirmed from the state. Previously unreported growth forms of Punctum smithi Morrison and Stenotrema barbatum (Clapp) are described. This determination follows a review of the best available science, which has indicated the Kanab ambersnail is not a distinct subspecies and therefore cannot be listed as an entity under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This action follows the publication of the proposed rule on January 6, 2020. The Kanab ambersnail was initially listed as endangered in 1991. It is a small snail in the Succineidae family, typically inhabiting marshes and other wetlands watered by springs and seeps at the base of sandstone or limestone cliffs. Three populations have been known to the Service, one in Three Lakes, UT, and in Vasey’s Paradise and Upper Elves Canyon, AZ. In 2013 the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) published a comprehensive, peer-reviewed, comparative genetic and morphological study of 11 populations of ambersnails (Oxyloma) in Utah and Arizona, including the Kanab ambersnail. USGS analyzed genetics, shell morphology, and reproductive soft tissue anatomy and found that the subspecies known as Kanab ambersnail is not a distinct subspecies.
