Metallica

It was March, 1986, when American heavy metal quartet Metallica issued their third studio album, Master of Puppets. Nearly two years late but supposedly marking the 30th anniversary, the band will release a massive box set on November 10 via their own Blackened Recordings label. The package includes a newly remastered edition of the album, demos, live recordings, alternative mixes and two CDs of interviews. There is also a 108-page hardback book of photos and essays, two DVDs, a concert on cassette tape, six badges, a lithograph and a folder with GLAD TIDINGS: Adam Granduciel is happy over the popularity of the new album by his band The War on Drugs. handwritten lyrics. One of the ten CDs features Jason Newsted’s auditions. This is particularly poignant because Jason replaced bassist Cliff Burton who was killed in Sweden during the band’s concert tour promoting Master of Puppets. Their tour bus skidded The War on Drugs off the road and overturned several times. Cliff was initially thrown from the vehicle before the bus landed on top of him. But for materials scientists at the SUniversity of Bayreuth in Germany, as well as many of their counterparts worldwide, spider silk is exciting stuff , with applications as varied as cardiac tissue engineering, breast implant coatings and even biodegradable running shoes. Thomas Scheibel, a professor of biomaterials at the University of Bayreuth’s Department of Engineering, has teamed up with Dr Felix Engel, a professor of experimental renal and cardiovascular research at Germany’s Erlangen University Hospital, to show how spider silk could be used to help restore cardiac muscle cells lost in a heart attack. Actually, they are using an artifi cial silk protein developed in the laboratory. Called fi broin, it’s what gives the spider silk its structure and mechanical stability. Engel has previously demonstrated that fi broin from an Indian silkworm is especially suitable as scaff olding material for engineering cardiac tissue.
