It appears he was a very talented young driver with every chance to work his way up the racing ladder and yet it all came to an end in a split second through no fault of his own, a devastating situation. For the first time I am very pleased to announce that we have so far got 100 contenders registered for the vari- ous SD34 MSG Championships which means a welcome £500 in fees towards the cost of the Presentation Evening. It’s still relatively early days so there’s plenty of chance to score well and end the year with a pot so get registered for just £5. It looks like neither the WRC nor F1 Championship driver will be a foregone conclusion for once with different wins on the events so far, a great thing for the spectators and long may it last. Don’t forget it’s not long before the Open Day at Myerscough College on 11th June which is an ideal opportuni- ty for you club to be seen by many thousands of the public so don’t miss it. Consequently, Audi Sport, in addition to its commitments in Formula E and the DTM, will be competing in the FIA World Rallycross Championship as well. Longstanding Audi factory driver Mattias Ekström founded EKS in early 2014, subsequently leading the squad to the top of the world’s standings with great personal commitment within the space of only three years. In the 2016 season, Ekström and EKS in the all-wheel-drive Audi S1 EKS RX quattro won both the drivers’ and the teams’ world championships against strong competitors from Ford, Peugeot, Volkswagen and numerous privateer teams. “We realized that it was becoming increasingly difficult for EKS to stand its ground against the factory teams, so we decided to intensify our commitment in the World RX,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass. Thanks to factory help from AUDI AG, the EKS project can continue.

Under (G) 2.7.1, Championship Stewards are also empowered to consider any request from the Championship Coordinator to penalise any Competitor for any breach of Championship regulations after holding a formal hearing to impose a penalty in accordance with C.2.1.1 (subject to the rights of appeal provided for in Section C). Under (W) 2.2.1, the Championship Stewards can only adjudicate upon any disputes, irregularities or appeals arising from the approved Championship Regulations. Firstly, congratulations must go out to Ian Woodhouse and Paul Rowland on their triumph last year. For the second year running the championship was won by a MKII Escort, but their success encapsulated everything that the Championship wishes to stand for: quality, budget rallying. It is now over two years since the Championship was launched and in just two years the championship has come a long way. From the original announcement in July 2015, the championship now retains an impressive amount of support from sponsors, circuits and competitors. And this season is no different. We welcome back our sponsors, Michelin MSVR, Motorsport News and Vital Equipment, while we also add Protyre to that impressive list. The new Protyre Challenge will certainly excite. We also add Harry Hockly Motorsport to this list, who will run an entry level Hockly Swift Cup, which is eagerly anticipated. We also expand into Scotland, making a first-ever visit to the Knockhill Race Circuit. Making it a truly national championship, the opportunity to add Knockhill to the calendar was one that couldn’t be turned down. If you haven’t, that’s ok, if you have, then maybe best keep quiet Eh !! Anyway, moving swiftly on…. you may notice there have been a few changes recently to our South East Region committee structure, which are more fully explained elsewhere in this edition, including my own vertical shift up this front page… Before I proceed with any other matters, I must deliver my own thanks and those I’m sure of all our members, to Neil Stretton who has ‘retired’ from the role of regional chairman, a post he has successfully delivered for the last 8 years. (Big boots to fill..) The work all the committee and especially Neil perform is almost exclusively unseen. There are many private hours spent ensuring the various administrative cogs engage and then turn, in order for the region to run smoothly. I hope that our communications won’t all be ‘one way’ – unlike a race track I suppose! - If you have a view, an opinion, an idea, don’t be shy to get in touch with either myself or any of the committee. If you participate in other ‘non circuit’ forms of motorsport let us know if you would like us to promote it or to gain more assistance. We have a number of platforms to share all your needs. As a marshalling family, we should also remember, especially in the current circumstances, that we are all on the same ‘side’.

For the Heroes Stages Rally at Weeton the setting up on the Saturday it was under hot sun all day and then on Sunday it was 100% different with heavy rain in the morning re- sulting in lots of standing water on the stages, then a dry spell, then more rain and finally it was dry for packing up. Having said that is was a great event starting with a full entry, a mix of Juniors and Seniors, but thanks to several kamikaze crews there were somewhat less finishers. So the Recovery Unit was kept very busy but thankfully the Rescue Unit never had to turn a wheel so being the Safety Officer for the event that was a great relief to me. Last weekend I made the rare venture over the Pennines into Yorkshire for the Trackrod Rally where I was doing radio duties in Cropton Forest although I have to admit I did this because I could combine it with a North Yorkshire Moors Railway steam gala over the weekend. Next it’s the WRGB when I will be at Oulton Park, Slate Mountain and Colwyn Bay.
