Of course this essay was very distressing for me, in light of the many treasured meetings that I have had with the Rosh Yeshivah over the years and in particular the sympathy and solidarity that the Rosh Yeshivah extended towards me during the first eight months of the controversy, when the Rosh Yeshivah told me that the ban on my books was a terrible mistake. While I have numerous points of contention with the essay, for the purposes of this letter I will only focus on the Rosh Yeshivah’s main point – the explanation of Rav Elyashiv’s view of why it is “heretical” to state that Chazal sometimes stated facts about science that are incorrect. The Rosh Yeshivah stated that this view is a minority opinion which has been rejected by most authorities, and that we are obligated to follow the majority. My Rebbeim dispute the notion that a minority opinion in hashkafah may not be adopted, except perhaps where the issue is both one of ikarei ha-das and ruled upon in one direction in the Gemara (as per the last teshuvah of the Chasam Sofer in Yoreh De’ah ). But I will not focus on that point here. -

The Lessons of the Four Who Entered the PaRDeS The Dangers Inherent Upon the Path of Ascent By Rabbi Ariel Bar Tzadok Copyright © 1993, 2003 by Ariel Bar Tzadok. All rights reserved. I do not wish to deceive anyone. The Kabbalistic path, referred to in the Talmud as the “PaRDeS” can be a dangerous one for those not properly prepared to walk it. I offer this essay as a clear warning to those who consider themselves ready, all the while that Heaven does not. The Kabbalistic/Prophetic path is a necessary step of spiritual evolution. Yet, it must not be taken lightly. This is the final step in spiritual growth, not the first step or the middle one. Too many people have a juvenile attitude towards spiritual practices. For such spiritual children, it is best to leave them where they are, doing what they are doing. There are many that are not ready to “descend” into the palaces of the Heavenly King. Yet, there are those who have been long ready, and have been waiting for these teachings. It is to you, my ready students, that I write this essay. In order to avoid the pitfalls along the path of Kabbalistic spiritual ascent, there are bits of knowledge that are essential to know. The reason why the Talmud records the following episode is to hint to us what these teachings are. "Our Rabbis have taught, four entered into the Pardes. They were Ben Azai, Ben Zoma, Aher, and Rabbi Akiba. Ben Azai gazed and died. Of him it is written, "precious in the eyes of HaShem is the death of his pious ones" (Tehilim 116, 15). -

Akedah, Art, and Illustrations in Hebrew Books
Akedah, Art, and Illustrations in Hebrew Books The Akedah (binding of Isaac) is a very popular theme in the arts. It appears in music, most recently (from a decidedly Christian perspective), the critically acclaimed indie musician Sufjan Steven’s who has the songAbraham (on his Seven Swans CD). In the visual arts, numerous representations of the Akedah can be found, from Rembrandt to Chagall. Some of the earliest Jewish art also contains the Akedah. In both the Dura_Europos Synagogue and the Beth-Alpha Synagogue there are depictions of the Akedah. This trend was continued in Hebrew manuscripts throughout the Middle Ages. In Hebrew books, however, there is a dearth of illustrations generally. At most in Haggadot or on title pages, at times, there are minor illustrations. But, there is a notable exception. In 1685, the work Pachad Yitzhak was published in Amsterdam. This book, written by Rabbi Dr. Isaac Vita (or Hayyim) Cantarini (see note 1), is about the attack on the Jewish ghetto of Padua in 1684. Preceding the title page there is an elaborate illustration of the Akedah. The simple reason for the inclusion of this is due to Cantarini’s first name Isaac and thus an allusion to his name. But, as we will see, there is more to this illustration. In his later work Et Kets, also published in Amsterdam in 1710 he includes another depiction of the Akedah. This work is devoted to figuring out when the Messiah will come, (he thinks in 1740), a much more upbeat topic than his prior work. As you can see both illustrations, it bears discussing them in some detail. -
Introduction to the Purpose of Man in the World
INTRODUCTION TO THE PURPOSE OF MAN IN THE WORLD he Morasha syllabus features a series of classes addressing the purpose of man in Tthe world. These shiurim address fundamental principles of Jewish philosophy including the relationship of the body and the soul, free will, the centrality of chesed (loving kindness), hashgachah pratit (Divine providence) and striving to emulate God. However, these principles revolve around even more basic issues that need to be explored first: What is the purpose of existence? Is there a purpose of man in this world, and if so, what is it? Why did God place us in a physical, material world? This shiur provides an approach to these questions which then serves as the underpinning for subsequent classes on fundamental Jewish principles. The evolutionary biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins (in River out of Eden) has the following to say about purpose: The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference. Judaism teaches that purpose is inherent to the world, and inherent to human existence. As the US National Academy of Sciences asserts (Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science), there is little room for science in this discussion: “Whether there is a purpose to the universe or a purpose for human existence are not questions for science.” In stark contrast to Dawkins, this class presents the Jewish outlook on purpose, and will address the following questions: Why did God create the world? Why are we here? Was the world created for God’s sake, or for ours?
