He grew up in Surrey. His full name is David Edward Williams. His mum’s name is Kathleen Williams, who was a lab technician at a school, and his dad’s – name is Peter Williams, who was a London transport engineer. Schooling Williams was educated at Collingswood Boy’s School in Wallington and Reigate Grammar School.     What are the British Actually Laughing At? An attempt to understand British comedy In my essay I will be exploring the reasons as to why British comedy is characterized the way it is. This will be done by taking into account the ways in which the British and American comedy industries contrast. I will evaluate the opposing commercial devices employed, the cultural differences, and the few similarities that these industries share. The British techniques, such as “sarcasm and irony”1 are vastly different to those used by the Americans who offer a more slapstick approach. This has resulted in both industries producing films and television programs that actually share little in common with each other, despite their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic. The British tend to approach situations with a mindset that comes across as significantly crude, cold and dismissive when juxtaposed with the classic American sunny disposition. I will explore this by comparing the UK and US versions of The Office. The general British national denial of emotions has moulded the route that comedy has taken, pushing comedy to become a way to stifle sentiment and a crutch for the population to lean on when feeling vulnerable. Yet interestingly, amongst both British and American audiences, an expectation appears concerning body image and weight, raising the question “are 2 comedians funnier when they are fat?”1F This has created a stereotype that links to the root of the need for comedy. The fact that both countries share this harsh stereotype lends something to the fact that all humans crave the desire to take pity upon or diminish the confidence of another through laughter, in order to feel better about oneself.

    Claiming Comedic Immunity Or, What Do You Get When You Cross Contemporary British Comedy with Disability Rebecca Mallett, Ph.D. Sheffield Hallam University, UK Abstract: This article addresses the mechanisms by which contemporary British comedy about disability is allowed to be funny. It argues that the available academic literature on the phenomenon is scant and a critical public vocabulary missing. Key Words: comedy, cultural criticism, tolerance. “In the Cultural review we see, Matt coughing and wheezing untruthfully. After pushing Russell into a wheelchair and claiming comedic immunity” (“Blame it on the Booties,” September, 2007). The quotation in the title of this article is taken from a poem in The Russell Brand Show broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on a Saturday in September 2007. 1 At the end of each two-hour show Mr Gee, the resident poet laureate, recites a poem he has written during the course of the broadcast. This particular poem relates to an anecdote told on the show about an incident the previous week when Matt Morgan (Russell’s co-host) had to wheel Russell through an airport. The anecdote was followed by a conversation about whether that situation was allowed to be funny, resulting in the couplet quoted above. As an intervention in that conversation and as part of thinking through the theorisation of culture and disability, this article addresses the mechanisms by which contemporary British comedy about disability is allowed to be funny. Its primary concern is not to answer in terms of essential comedic characteristics, but rather in terms of current discursive possibilities, in both wider public discourse and in the contracted world of the academy.

In recent years poor white socially marginalised groups, now popularly referred to as “chavs”, have become a prevalent comedy target. One of the most popular and controversial television “comedy chavs” is Little Britain’s fictional teenage single mother, Vicky Pollard. This paper examines the representation of Vicky Pollard in light of contemporary widespread abuse of the white working class. Highlighting the polysemic and ambivalent nature of Vicky Pollard’s representation, the paper argues that whilst Little Britain’s characterisation of Vicky Pollard largely contributes to contemporary widespread demonization of the working class, there are moments within Little Britain when a more sympathetic tone towards the poor working class may be read, and where chav identities are used to ridicule the pretensions, superficiality, and falsity of middle-class identities. The paper concludes that television comedy has been, and continues to be, a significant vehicle through which serious concerns, anxieties, and questions about social class and class identities are discursively constructed and contested.
