2018 Youth Rec Summer Program Brochure

The programs offered listed in this brochure are inclusive. While the Youth Rec program is designed for youth who have disabilities, the camps/classes that your child may choose from are the same that are offered for all children in our community. PossAbilities provides extra support for your child to have successful, fun experiences with their peers without disabilities. Our goal is to help your child to explore new interests, build skills, make new friends and have fun.

Contact: Robyn Befort, Program Director 208-6248 [email protected]

Dates: June 11 - August 10, 2018 (Closed July 4th). There will be limited staff available August 13th – 24th. Registration for those weeks will be sent out around August 1st when staff know when they will be returning to college. We will only be offering POSM REC activities during this time.

LEARN. PLAY. GROW. FOR LIFE.

Registration will start March 12th. The deadline for registration for summer programming is April 27th.

We want to make registration for summer programming as easy as possible but do request that registration be done in person rather than via phone or e-mail. There is annual paperwork that will need to be completed along with the program registration. If your child has a case manager, he or she must be included in this meeting as there are forms they must also sign.

Participants will have a $500.00 limit for camp registration fees. That is not to say that the child cannot attend more camps if desired, but that PossAbilities will only be responsible for $500.00 in registration fees. If a child wishes to attend more camps, the family is welcome to pay privately for the additional registration fees. The fees are listed by the camp description. POSM REC activities are also always an option.

For Participants registering for a half day of services, the morning must end by 12:00 and the afternoon must start at 12:30 or later. We will not provide transportation to Adaptive Park and Rec day camps.

We have a set amount of staff available each week. Once they have all been scheduled with children, the registration for that week will be closed. Registration is based on a first come, first serve basis.

STATEMENTS REGARDING BILLING – SUMMER PROGRAMMING 2018 Hours that are not attended but scheduled will be billed directly to the parent/guardian rather than to the Participant’s funding source. Participants will be billed for all hours scheduled regardless of attendance with the exception of:

I. Hours that a Participant is sick. II. Hours that have been cancelled by May 11, 2018 Note, when only partial hours are cancelled for a particular camp (for example, if a child attends JETS Camp on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday but has an appointment on Wednesday so does not attend) parent/guardian will be billed for the fee charged by the camp for those hours regardless of when the partial hours were cancelled as PossAbilities is responsible for paying the full amount of camp fees (for the example given above, the parent/guardian would be charged $21.50 which is the daily rate for JETS camps). Transportation: Transportation will not be billed on days that a Participant does not attend. Transportation will be billed to the parent, however, if PossAbilities’ staff arrives to pick up the Participant because no notification of absence was given.

Summer school for the Rochester school district is scheduled for July 9-27, Monday-Friday.

RPS Superintendent Michael Muñoz explained that the one-year schedule is necessary because of a major indoor air quality project the district is planning to undertake in the summer of 2019. By starting a week earlier in 2018 and the normal time — the Tuesday after Labor Day — for the 2019-20 school year, that grants construction crews an extra two weeks to complete their work.

YMCA SUMMER DAY CAMPS

THESE CAMPS ARE PRIMARILY OUTSIDE. STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO TOLERATE SPENDING THE WHOLE DAY OUTDOORS.

While the Y offers a variety of different camp themes throughout the summer, we have observed over the past summers that all of the camps tend to be very similar. We have seen very little difference in the camp activities week to week. The camps don’t seem to do many activities based on the weekly theme. There is a new YMCA Camp Director again this summer, so we do not know what the quality of camp programming will be this year. Please consider if your child will become upset if his or her camp does not follow the expected theme before registering for any of the YMCA Camps. This includes Power Specialty and Youth Sports which will only spend part of the day devoted to the theme. The rest of the day will be spent with the Summer Power Camp group.

YMCA SUMMER UPROAR (entering grades 6-8 in fall 2018) $50.00 one-time registration fee plus $190.00 per week fee

Summer Uproar is a full-day, experience-based enrichment program that encourages older kids to explore, increase understanding, build independence and most importantly, have fun! We provide a Healthy Living experience for kids by educating on healthy food choices and the right balance of physical activity. Uproar brings a multitude of character development experiences to kids through community involvement, leadership activities, team building exercises, goal setting and more. Days are filled with field trips, outings to amusement and water parks, and fun group activities that exercise the body, challenge the mind and nurture the spirit of our youth. NOTE: Summer Uproar activities vary by YMCA branch and program location. A detailed schedule will be available in the spring.

QUARRY HILL NATURE CAMPS Consent form must be completed prior to registration.

Quarry Hill requires that all PossAbilities participants have 1:1 staffing. Therefore, students who normally pay a group rate will be required to pay the 1:1 rate for the hours of the camp. Quarry Hill also asks that all PossAbilities campers meet their PossAbilities staff 15 minutes prior to the start of the camp in order to give them time to meet and get to camp by its start time.

Remem ber, students enjoying nature sometimes get dirty and wet. Please dress your child accordingly (shorts, t-shirt and tennis shoes). We ask that sunscreen and insect repellant be applied at home before coming to camp. Camp does meet in the rain, and usually goes outside. A raincoat or poncho (not umbrella) should be sent along or worn on rainy or potential rainy days.

Please note: Many other camps only operate in the mornings. Therefore, for staffing reasons, we would like students to attend the afternoon Quarry Hill camps if possible.
