Bruegel's Netherlandish Proverbs And Originalveröffentlichung in: Acta historiae artium : an art-historical journal of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, 44 (2003), S. 191-205 YOKO MORI* BRUEGEL’S NETHERLANDISH PROVERBS AND CORRESPONDING IMAGES IN OLD JAPANESE ART Among old Dutch proverbs and those in Japanese there are many similar views of Life, wisdom and moral lessons, even though the phrasing may differ. The present author discusses twelve proverbs from Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Nether­ landish Proverbs (1559) in Berlin and corresponding old Japanese proverbs and sayings in Japanese art to compare ex­ pressions, items of each proverb, meaning, degree of morality and other concerns. The present author also refers to some literary (Erasmus, Anna Bijns, Donaes Idinau and Carolus Tuiman and other literati) as well as visual background (misericords, engravings by Frans Hogenberg, Nicolaes Clock and other artists) before and after Bruegel’s time as parallel examples. Proverbs in Ukiyoe, illustrations of proverb books, and cartoons by Japanese artists, such as those by Utagawa Toyokuni the Elder, Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Kawanabe Kyosai, make ^ood comparisons of Bruegel’s work. Bruegel’s re­ presentation of “Casting roses before swine” corresponds to Kuniyoshi s “Gold coins to a cat.” Both indicate almost the same meaning to give valuable advice or things to those who are unable to appreciate them. However, Bruegel’s “He falls from the ox onto the ass” is meant to denote falling from a higher position to a lower one, while Kyosai’s “To jump from a cow to a horse” signifies the opposite situation; that is, a man exchanges his old wife for a young wife. In general, Japanese proverbial images give us the impression of a more comic and humorous sentiment than we find m Bruegel s didactic world. By illustrating biblical sub­ jects, they provide a specific interpretation of selected passages, clarifying and disambiguating by means of images, even where Scripture is vague or obscure. This is due first of all to the nature of the texts in the Old and New Testaments: one rarely encounters descriptions of persons and events vivid enough to function as precise templates for pictorial compo­ sitions. Pictures, on the other hand, are subject to the necessity of putting something in concrete form; as such, they require legitimization and are potentially instruments of codification.1 During the Reformation pictures were used to canonize religious view­ points and to give expression to various orthodoxies, but also to denounce the heterodoxy of the opposing side. But whatever their function in reli­ gious practice may have been, as a rule they operated as vehicles of dis­ ambiguation. He is sometimes referred to as "Peasant Bruegel" to distinguish him from other members of the Brueghel dynasty, but is also the one generally meant when the context does not make clear which "Bruegel" is being referred to. From 1559 he dropped the 'h' from his name and started signing his paintings as Bruegel. Life There are records that he was born in Breda, Netherlands, but it is uncertain whether the Dutch town of Breda or the Belgian town of Bree, called Breda in Latin, is meant. He was an apprentice of Pieter Coecke van Aelst, whose daughter Mayken he later married. He spent some time in France and Italy, and then went to Antwerp, where in 1551 he was accepted as a master in the painter's guild. He traveled to Italy soon after, and then returned to Antwerp before settling in Brussels permanently 10 years later. He received the nickname 'Peasant Bruegel' or 'Bruegel the Peasant' for his alleged practice of dressing up like a peasant in order to mingle at weddings and other celebrations, thereby gaining inspiration and authentic details for his genre paintings.

    PETER BRUEGEL THE ELDER Pieter Bruegel the Elder 1525–1530) was the most significant artist of Dutch and Flemish Renaiss- ance painting, a painter and printmaker, known for his landscapes and peasant scenes; he was a pioneer in making both types of subject the focus in large paintings. He was a formative influence on Dutch Golden Age painting and later painting in general in his innovative choices of subject matter, as one of the first generation of artists to grow up when religious subjects had ceased to be the natural subject matter of painting. He also painted no portraits, the other mainstay of Netherlandish art. After his training and travels to Italy, he returned in 1555 to settle in Antwerp, where he worked mainly as a prolific designer of prints for the leading publisher of the day. Only towards the end of the decade did he switch to make painting his main medium, and all his famous paintings come from the following period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was probably in his early forties, and at the height of his powers. As well as looking forwards, his art reinvigorates medieval subjects such as marginal drolleries of ordinary life in illuminated manu- scripts, and the calendar scenes of agricultural labours set in land- scape backgrounds, and puts these on a much larger scale than before, and in the expensive medium of oil painting. He does the same with the fantastic and anarchic world developed in Renaissance prints and book illustrations. Pieter Bruegel specialized in genre paintings populated by peasants, often with a landscape element, though he also painted religious works.

    Rural Memory, Pagan Idolatry: Pieter Bruegel’s Peasant Shrines Stephanie Porras Painted in 1563, The Flight into Egypt (plate 1) is a curious picture within Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s oeuvre. The small, jewel-like panel (c. 37 × 56 cm), with a handful of miniscule fi gures, is executed in the banded landscape format more evocative of the previous generation of Netherlandish artists, such as Lucas Gassel and Jan van Amstel. While its size and highly fi nished style connect The Flight into Egypt with Bruegel’s Landscape with Bird Trap of 1565 (Vienna: Kunsthistorisches Museum), here the artist is engaged in the representation of a biblical scene. Owned at various points in its history by such distinguished collectors as Peter Paul Rubens and Pieter Stevens, The Flight into Egypt is also one of the few paintings by Bruegel for which during the artist’s lifetime an attributable owner is known.1 In the bottom right-hand corner of this diminutive panel, there is a small wooden gabled box attached to a pollarded willow (plate 2). This peculiar structure is a shrine, holding a tiny grey fi gure that appears to fall forward at a jaunty angle. A casual viewer, at fi rst glance, may almost entirely miss this modest construction, a peculiar detail nearly subsumed within a naturalistic landscape. The inclusion of a falling idol within the panel is not in itself unusual – the motif was a well-established part of the iconography of the Flight into Egypt, originating from the apocryphal gospel, the Protoevangelion of James.2 According to the text, when the Holy Family entered a pagan temple upon their arrival in Egypt, all the idols crumbled in the presence of the Christ child.

    BRUEGEL OCTOBER 2, 2018 - JANUARY 13, 2019 At the beginning of October, the Kunsthistorisches Museum will open the first-ever major monograph show dedicated to the greatest Netherlandish painter of the sixteenth century: Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525/30‒1569). The exhibition commemorates the 450th anniversary of his death. During his lifetime, Pieter Bruegel the Elder was already among the period’s most sought-after artists, with his works achieving exceptionally high prices. Only about forty paintings and sixty prints by him are all that has come down to us. The twelve panels in the Kunsthistorisches Museum are by far the largest collection of Bruegels in the world, a fact we owe to 16th century Habsburg connoisseurs who already appreciated the exceptional quality of his works and strove to acquire these prestigious paintings. Bruegel revolutionised landscape and genre painting, and his compositions continue to elicit varied and controversial interpretations. The depth and breadth of his pictorial world and the perceptive powers of observation he employs in his depictions of quotidian life continue to fascinate all who encounter his works. A once-in-a-lifetime exhibition Museums and private collectors count Bruegel’s works among their most precious and fragile possessions. Most of the panels have never been loaned for an exhibition. By bringing together over 90 works by the master, the exhibition in Vienna has assembled for the very first time a comprehensive overview of Bruegel’s oeuvre: comprising around 30 panel paintings (i.e. three- quarters of extant paintings) and almost half of his preserved drawings and prints, the show offers visitors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse themselves in the artist’s complex pictorial world, to study his stylistic development and his creative process, and to get to know his method of work, his pictorial humour and his unique narrative powers.
