DIRECTOR’S REMARKS: Vince announced that the CLC is co-sponsoring, along with Steele Rubber, Thom and Ouarda Wells and their 1939 Cadillac Series 61 Coupe in the 2007 Great Race. There will be an article about this in the July PR newsletter. Vince mentioned that he has received a request from Radio One for the use of 1960s-70s for the movie premiere of Talk to Me. This latter announcement prompted general discussion about the use of members’ cars for commercial and private interests.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: The Minutes from the May meeting were not read since they had been published and distributed to all members in the June, 2007 newsletter.

TREASURER’S REPORT: The Treasurer’s Report covered the time period from the April meeting to date. Harry Scott reported that the Region’s income was $80.21. The total expenses for the same time period were $912.49. The checking account balance as of the meeting was $3,926.22 and the Certificate of Deposit principal was $5,345.75. Of all the individual pages and/or documents posted, the June newsletter has been viewed the most often -- 473 hits. Interestingly, the November 2006 issue featuring the Eldorado Extravaganza: 1953- 1966 was viewed 146 times. At least 15% of the overall hits are from outside the U.S. One new commercial ad has been added and one has expired. Lastly, the most recent ad placed for cars for sale, the late Americo Oliveira’s collection, resulted in a sale in one day.

2007 GREAT RACE STORY AND PHOTOS BY THOM & OUARDA WELLS

Along with Steele Rubber, the CLC will be co-sponsoring a 1939 Cadillac in the 2007 Great Race, which marks the event’s 25th Anniversary. Car #18, affectionately known as “Miss Emma”, is a 1939 Series 61 Convertible Coupe that will be driven by Thom Wells and navigated by Ouarda Wells of Hendersonville, North Carolina. The race begins on Saturday June 30th in Concord, North Carolina and ends on Saturday July 14th in Anaheim, California.

“Miss Emma” is one of 350 Series 61 Convertible Coupes manufactured in 1939 and one of eight known survivors. She was found by its “Miss Emma” in all her glory down in New Mexico second owners, Robert and Betsy where she was purchased Inskeep of Farmington, New Mexico, in 1974 in Tuba City, Arizona. Bob was in the oil and gas business that took him to various locations throughout the West including the Hopi and Navajo Reservations. He kept noticing the car in a yard in Tuba City, which is the tribal Headquarters for the Navajo Nation and home to both Navajo and Hopi reservations in the area. For several years, he kept inquiring about the car’s owner and no one ever had any information. One weekend in 1976, Bob decided to find out once and for all and made a trip to Tuba City to search for the owner. This time he asked around and said that he was trying to find the owner because he had a check for him or her. After leaving his motel room’s number, a man identifying himself as the owner appeared there about an hour later. The owner was the retired local telephone company manager who married a Navajo woman and lived on the reservation. He had bought the car in 1945 after returning from World War II and had driven it until he purchased a new car in 1960. He parked the car in his yard and there it sat until now.

Bob asked if the car was for sale. The owner asked why he wanted to buy a beat up old car that was sitting on the ground and would need to be hoisted by a crane onto a truck. Bob told him he wanted to restore it. The owner said lots of people through the years said the same thing, but they never came back to pick it up. Well, Bob and his son Bob, Jr. came back the next weekend and “Miss Emma” was on her way back to Farmington for a major ground-up restoration. Over the next 12 years, Bob and Bob, Jr. painstakingly restored it to original condition. A large tin box overflows with correspondence, receipts, and notes about each step of the restoration. Nothing was overlooked and everything was precisely done as it was in 1939.

During the 2006 Great Race, Ouarda and I stopped in Farmington, New Mexico in our 1938 Cadillac Convertible Sedan and met one of Bob’s longtime friends, Max Taylor, who told us about “Miss Emma.” Max had a 1938 Cadillac that he gave to his son in Tennessee but said that Bob Inskeep might be interested in selling “Miss Emma.” We called Bob after Tom & Ouarda in their 1938 Cadillac returning home from the race during the 2006 Great Race and started a series of phone calls.

This resulted in knowing one of the finest guys that we have ever dealt with concerning a car. It really wasn’t like buying a car; it was more like being interviewed for an adoption. We knew Bob loved this car, as well as, all the other cars that he and Bob, Jr. had restored. We chatted about many memories that he had. His biggest concern was that his work wouldn’t meet our expectations. When we finally met Bob and Bob, Jr. in March 2007 to see the car, we felt like we met three Cadillacs: one Cadillac car and two “Cadillac” men. We reviewed the car, looked over all the pictures, and could hardly leave after buying her. We must say that we are very proud to have been selected to be her new keeper. Thanks to the Inskeep family, “Miss Emma” is our proud entry in 2007 Great Race.

When we drive through Albuquerque, New Mexico during the 2007 race, Bob and Bob, Jr. will be there to see us. We will have both “Bobs” with us in spirit when we cross the finish line. We hope they notice the new plaque on the dashboard with “Robert Inskeep” on it as we proudly dedicate “Miss Emma”, Car#18, to the Inskeep family of Farmington, New Mexico.

We are looking forward to seeing CLC members and their cars at the overnight stops. We have space available for the cars to be displayed in our tent (look for the tent with the CLC name and logo on all four sides).

Go to www.greatrace.com to see the schedule and route.

Also, you can keep up with our progress at http://greatracegarage.com/wpmu/wellsandwellsracing/ where we will be providing a first hand account of the race.

Thanks for your support!

REGION NOTES BY STEVEN SISSON

Due to the proximity of this year’s Grand National, there will be a larger than usual number of Potomac Region members traveling to Savannah in early August. Assuming you want to have your collectible Cadillac or LaSalle there, you basically have two ways to make that happen.

Some have expressed interest in having their car shipped to the meet by truck. George Boxley and a few others are planning on using a transporter. If you are interested, please contact George at 301-261-5634 or [email protected] for more information.

Others have expressed interest in caravanning to Savannah, which is about eight hours south mostly via I- 95. The caravan would leave on Wednesday, August 1st and return Sunday August 5th. The assembly point for departure would probably be in the Springfield, VA area, perhaps just off I-95 in a parking lot near Old Keene Mill Road. Departure would be about 7 AM to ensure arrival in time to attend the welcome reception. Cars in this group would need to be able to sustain posted speed limits for the trip. A lunch break, probably at a Cracker Barrel, will be figured in. Members traveling in the caravan should have a charged walkie-talkie The Sissons leading the caravan during the 2006 Spring Driving Tour to allow communications between Photo by Vince Taliano the lead car and other cars, as well as a fully charged cell phone.

If you want to participate in the caravan or would like more information, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 703-724-7652. A roster of interested members, including cell phone numbers, will be distributed by mid-July with final plans, dates, times and places.

JULY 7-8 WEEKEND IN HERSHEY PA STORY BY RICHARD SILLS PHOTO BY CORY CORRELL

I would like to extend an invitation to Potomac Region members to attend the CLC show at the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA on Saturday July 7. This event, co-sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Region and the Upper Susquehanna Region, promises to be well-attended. Awards will be given for the best Cadillac of each decade, as well as a Best of Show and a Long-Distance award.

Attending this show will also give you an opportunity to see the Museum's new exhibit: America at Speed. This exhibit includes a 1950 Cadillac Series 61 coupe that has been restored by the GM Heritage Center to resemble the car that Briggs Cunningham raced at 24 Hours of LeMans. The Museum's 115-vehicle exhibit includes other Cadillacs as well, including a 1912 model (first year of the self-starter) and a 1976 Eldorado convertible.

AutoWeek recently named the AACA Museum as one of the 16 The 1950 Series 61 coupe is a reproduction of one of best car museums in the entire the two original Briggs Cunningham LeMans racers world -- an accomplishment made even more remarkable because this museum is strictly hobby-supported, not underwritten by a manufacturer or a major donor.

Those who want to make a weekend of it should try to make reservations at the Spring Hill Suites hotel, which is adjacent to the AACA Museum. At 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, we will have a CLC group dinner at a nearby restaurant called Sasha's Hideaway (www.sashashideaway.com).

At 10 a.m. on Sunday morning July 8, we have scheduled a tour of the nearby AACA Library and Research Center. Librarian Kim Miller will be on hand to greet tour participants and explain how to make use of the Library's resources. Visitors to this facility are always amazed at the huge amount of reference material available to hobbyists and restorers.

For more information about the Hershey event, you may contact me or Art Archambeault ([email protected]). Art is the Activities Director for the Central Pennsylvania Region.

INDIANAPOLIS 500 LASALLE PACE CARS STORY BY VINCE TALIANO PHOTOS BY http://indymotorspeedway.com/500pace.htm

Did you know that LaSalle was chosen to be an Indianapolis 500 Pace Car as many times as Cadillac -- three (Cadillac was selected in 1931, 1973 and 1992)? Not too shabby for a car that only had 14 production years.

1In a grueling test at the GM Proving Grounds three months after the LaSalle’s debut in 1927, a standard production [LaSalle] roadster, stripped of such impediments as a windshield and fenders and fitted with high-compression cylinder heads and a high-lift camshaft, covered 951.8 miles (1,532 km) at an average speed of 95.3 mph (153 kph) in the hands of division test driver Willard “Big Boy” Rader. That speed was only 2 mph (3 kph) slower than the winning speed at that year's Indianapolis 500 where “Big Boy” drove the LaSalle pace car (see photo below).

AACA NATIONAL SOUTHEASTERN DIVISION SPRING MEET STORY BY STEVEN SISSON PHOTO BY BYRON ALSOP

Spectators enjoying the sights in New Bern, North Carolina

The trip to New Bern, North Carolina for the Annual AACA National Southeastern Division Spring Meet was very pleasant. There were good sights, good views, good food, and of course, 400 or so prize winning cars. This show was different than most as the cars were spread out up and down the streets and in office and church parking lots. We met the Denchfields for lunch one day and with others for dinner and sightseeing. We even went down to Atlantic Beach, a seaside resort where I went swimming when I was about 13-years-old.

The only two cars that we saw from the Potomac Region were two of our most decorated: Byron Alsop’s 1936 Series 85 V-12 Convertible Sedan and Barton Mitchell's 1953 Eldorado. Both cars were major winners at last year’s Eldorado Extravaganza: 1953-1966 with Byron’s car winning Best in Class C (1930-1940 Cadillac V-12 & V-16 only), Best Pre-War and Ladies’ Choice, and Barton’s car winning Best in Class F (1953-1958 Eldorados only) and Best of Show. Neither car disappointed here either as they both won their First Junior. Congratulations to Byron and Barton and best of luck as they pursue their AACA Senior Award.

GENERAL MOTORS STYLING 1927-1958 STORY AND PHOTOS BY TRACY POWELL

The hottest news this summer is the release of the first and only book covering the “ era” of design at GM: General Motors Styling 1927-1958: Genesis of the World’s Largest Design Studios by award-winning journalist and Automobile Quarterly managing editor Tracy Powell.

After Alfred Sloan brought Harley Earl on board after Earl’s new LaSalle masterpiece in 1927, automotive styling was never the same. GM’s burgeoning Art & Colour Section eventually transformed the way the world perceived personal transportation. By the time this group of designers and engineers was known as GM Styling, it had solidified its standing as the world’s most expansive and prolific studio group in the world.

General Motors Styling 1927-1958 covers an exciting period from Earl’s first prompting by Fred and Larry Fisher, to the point when Bill Mitchell took the reigns. Nearly 250 pages document the inner workings, the relationships, the politics and the people who shaped the studios’ products for more than 30 years: from pre-Depression styling, through the “Golden Age” of the classics, during wartime activity to the flamboyant fins of the ’50s.

More than 20 full-color artist renderings are revealed, some for the first time to the public, from the drafting tables of stylists including Bill Mitchell, Henry Lauve and Art Ross. An equal amount of telling historical photography complements the story, as does color photography of a number of milestone cars, including the 1927 LaSalle where it all began; the 1938 Buick Y-Job that sparked a line of dream cars; Mitchell’s first major contribution, the 1938 Cadillac 60 Special; the 1953 Corvette; and other dream cars including the 1951 Le Sabre, the 1955 Brougham, and Firebirds I, II and III. An in-depth chapter on the birth of the Tech Center, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, covers its incredible conception and construction.

With a Foreword by Chuck Jordan, General Motors Styling 1927-1958 is now available for a pre-publication discount of just $19.95. That’s $10 off the list price, and shipping is free. Now that’s good news! For more info, visit http://www.powellhousepub.com/.

33RD ANNUAL ALL-GM SHOW CATONSVILLE (MD) COMMUNITY COLLEGE STORY & PHOTOS BY BILL SCOTT

Charles Gillet’s 1931 Cadillac Model 355A Convertible Coupe

Best Cadillac

On Sunday June 10th, the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America (VCCA) Free State Region hosted its 33rd Annual All-GM Show at Catonsville (MD) Community College. For the second consecutive year, the Potomac Region was one of the organizations that co-sponsored the trophies. Three awards were given in each class (First, Second and Third) plus a Peoples Choice and Best of Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, Pontiac and Oldsmobile.

Free donuts and coffee were provided for the morning relaxation time and free watermelon was provided in the afternoon. Hot dogs and drinks were available to purchase throughout the day.

Visit us on the web! 14 www.clcpotomacregion.org Cadillac & LaSalle Club Potomac Region Caddie Chronicle July 2007

Vehicles started arriving as early as 8:00 AM and a total of 62 vehicles were registered by the 12:00 noon cut-off. Several no-show and do- not-judge resulted in 54 vehicles being judged in 11 different classes. The most popular decades were the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s and modifieds were well represented as well.

The weather was cool with intermittent sunshine and some light mist rain but not enough to cause any panic or hurry to protect the vehicles.

Sam Caravello’s 1968 Deville Convertible Cadillacs and LaSalles in attendance included Charles Gillet’s 1931 Cadillac (Best Cadillac selected by Jack Anderson, Chief Judge, and his Assistant Chief Judge), Frank Lindberg’s 1940 LaSalle, Ron Siegrist’s 1966 Eldorado, Sam Caravello’s 1968 Deville Convertible and Mike Carlin’s 1979 Eldorado.

People's Choice (voted on by the registrants) was a 1949 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery owned by Gary Brown.

All seemed to enjoy themselves and are looking forward to next year’s Catonsville Show on June 8, 2008. Frank Lindberg’s 1940 LaSalle

Thanks to the CLC Potomac Region and the organizations that co-sponsored the event for their continued support.

34TH ANNUAL SULLY PLANTATION FATHER’S DAY ANTIQUE CAR SHOW STORY BY DIANE & HENRY RUBY PHOTOS BY R. SCOT MINESINGER

Spectators peruse the Cadillacs and LaSalles while an airplane prepares to land at nearby Dulles International Airport

On June 17, the 34th Annual Sully Antique Car show was held at Sully Plantation in Chantilly, Virginia. The show was from 10 am - 3 pm and the weather was hot and clear. For the second year in a row, the Potomac Region was given its own judging class for Cadillacs and LaSalles thru 1972. Other than the year cut-off, the only other requirement for Cadillacs and LaSalles to be eligible for this class was that they had to be pre-registered (day of show registered Cadillacs and LaSalles were parked in other areas). We filled our allotted space with 14 pre-registered cars (three others didn’t post). The judging for our class was done by Show Coordinators Henry Ruby and Derrick Fisher, who withdrew their cars from judging. It was very hard to pick the top three cars. All were deserving of an award.

First Place went to Anders Lofstrand, Myersville MD, for his 1906 Model K Runabout. This car has been in the Lofstrand family since 1952. Second Place went to Byron Alsop, Oak Hill VA, for his 1936 Cadillac Series 85 V-12 Convertible Sedan. This car has developed quite a following since its restoration was completed in the summer of 2006. As the case last year, third place went to J. Roger Bentley, Brinklow MD. But this time for his newly acquired 1939 LaSalle 2 Door Convertible.

Other Potomac Region Cadillacs in attendance included Richard Sisson’s

1954 Eldorado, Henry & Diane Ruby’s Anders Lofstrand’s 1906 Model K Runabout 1958 Eldorado Biarritz, Derrick Fisher’s First Place 1960 Coupe Deville, Burt Zwibel’s 1960 Class 36: Cadillac / LaSalle thru 1972 Series 62 Convertible, Mike Fahey’s 1964 Sedan Deville, and R. Scot Minesinger’s 1970 Deville Convertible. The Denchfields participated with their 1948 Convertible Coupe, although it wasn’t displayed with the other cars in Class 36. Members in attendance who were not showing cars included Franklin Gage, Brenda & Jim George and Harry Scott.

Many people enjoyed the fine line of Cadillacs and LaSalles as “Oohs” and “Aahs” could be heard as they walked past the cars on display. A good time was had by all who attended.

Thanks again to the George Washington

Chapter of the Model A Ford Club of Arriving in style! America for granting our request for our Byron & Tom Alsop in their own class and parking area and to all of 1936 Cadillac Series 85 V-12 Convertible Sedan our members who helped make this show a success.
