Rai, Sonepat – 131029, Haryana (India) Dr. Prabhakar Machwe (1917-1991) Prolific writer, linguist and an authority on Indian literature, Dr. Prabhakar Machwe was born on 26 December 1917 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He graduated from Vikram University, Ujjain and obtained Masters in Philosophy, 1937, and English Literature, 1945, Agra University; Sahitya Ratna and Ph.D, Agra University, 1957. Dr. Machwe started his career as a lecturer in Madhav College, Ujjain, 1938-48. He worked as Literary Producer, All India Radio, Nagpur, Allahabad and New Delhi, 1948-54. He was closely associated with Sahitya Akademi from its inception in 1954 and served as Assistant Secretary, 1954-70, and Secretary, 1970-75. Dr. Machwe was Visiting Professor in Indian Studies Departments at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California on a Fulbright and Rockefeller grant (1959-1961); and later Officer on Special Duty (Language) in Union Public Service Commission, 1964-66. After retiring from Sahitya Akademi in 1975, Dr. Machwe was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla, 1976-77, and Director of Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, Calcutta, 1979-85. He spent the last years of his life in Indore as Chief Editor of a Hindi daily, Choutha Sansar, 1988-91. Dr. Prabhakar Machwe travelled widely for lecture tours to Germany, Russia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Japan and Thailand. He organised national and international seminars on the occasion of the birth centenaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo between 1961 and 1972.

Part I : the GMRT -- a historical perspective . Part II : the GMRT -- current status . Part III : future -- the upgraded GMRT Some history . It is the early 1980s… the VLA has recently become operational . Radio astronomy has shifted from the low frequencies, where it was born, to higher frequencies (cm and higher wavelengths) -- obvious reasons . Note, however, techniques like self-cal have been shown to work . In India, the radio astronomy group at the Tata Institute, under the leadership of Govind Swarup, is looking for the next big challenge… They have already : . Built the Ooty Radio Telescope in the late 1960s – still operational & producing international quality results (in fact, currently being upgraded with new receiver system!) . Built the Ooty Synthesis Radio Telescope (1980s) – short-lived but valuable learnings . Built up considerable experience in low frequencies (metre wavelengths) Birth of the GMRT . Motivation : bridge the gap in radio astronomy facilities at low frequencies and address science problems best studied at metre wavelengths . First concept : 1984 (started with large cylinders); evolved to 34 dishes of 45 metres by 1986 . Project cleared and funding secured by 1987 . Construction started : 1990; first antenna erected : 1992 . First light observations : 1997 – 1998 . Released for world-wide use : 2002 The GMRT : turning it ON Jan 1997 : First fringes with the prototype GMRT correlator Dec 1998 : first light pulsar observation with the GMRT Dedication of the GMRT The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope was dedicated to the World Scientific Community by the Chairman of TIFR Council, Shri Ratan Tata.

    Theatre for Change 1 Editorial ‘The very process of the workshop does so much for women. The process is an end in itself. For women who are not given to articulating their views, women who are not given to exploring their bodies in a creative way, for feeling good, for feeling fresh. Just doing physical and breathing exercises is a liberating experience for them. Then sharing experiences with each other and discovering that they are not insane, you know, discovering that every woman has dissatisfaction and negative feelings, touching other lives . When you come together in a space, you develop a trust, sharing with each other, enjoying just being in this space, enjoying singing and creating, out of your own experiences, your own plays’—Tripurari Sharma Theatre as process—workshopping—is an empowering activity. It encourages self- expression, develops self-confidence and communication skills, and promotes teamwork, cooperation, sharing. It is also therapeutic, helping individuals to probe within and express—share—deeply emotional experiences. Role-playing enables one to ‘enact’ something deeply personal that one is not otherwise able to express, displacing it and rendering it ‘safe’, supposedly ‘fictionalized’. In short, workshopping can be a liberatory experience. For women who, in our society especially, are not encouraged to develop an intimacy with their bodies, who are conditioned to be ashamed or uncomfortable about their physicality, the process of focusing on the body, on exercises which change one’s awareness of and relationship with and deployment of one’s body, offers an additional benefit, opening up a dimension of physicality which is normally out of bounds.

    Oral Tradition, 27/2 (2012): 333-350 Patronage, Commodification, and the Dissemination of Performance Art: The Shared Benefits of Web Archiving Elizabeth Wickett Introduction This essay addresses the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of documenting oral performance on film, the evolution of a polymodal form of archival documentation leading to online monographs, and the question of how performers may benefit from the archival process— specifically with reference to performances of the epic of Pabuji in Rajasthan, India.1 Owing to digital technology and the emergence of the Internet as a broadcasting forum and marketing agent, a phenomenon has occurred which we might term the “commodification” of expressive culture. In this technological universe where sounds and images are sold for the benefit of some (but not others), issues of copyright, intellectual property rights, and the commercialization and marketing of expressive culture on the web have become paramount.2 Video excerpts are being broadcast around the world in free and open formats.3 Whereas documentation of oral performance traditions by scholars and for scholars was once the norm, I propose that we—as ethnographers, linguists, and folklorists—must ensure that such performers can also benefit from the process of academic study and documentation, with support for the perpetuation of their livelihood as well as their cultural and artistic legacy. How do we as scholars and ethnographic filmmakers respond to these challenges and use these media to the performers’ benefit? 1 I am very grateful to the Firebird Foundation for Anthropological Research for their funding of the filming and archival documentation of four performances of the oral epic of Pabuji ki par across Rajasthan in 2008 and its production as five films in 2009 (Wickett 2009).
