These experiments require a fast, accurate staging system suitable for live embryos. We present a system comprising (1) subdivision of embryogenesis into equal periods, (2) expression of stage in percent of complete embryogenesis time, (3) characterization of stages by light micrographs (and descriptive text), and (4) illustration of stages at the egg, embryo, and limb levels of resolution. Advantages of a percent-system include communicability, flexibility in temporal resolution, accurate assignment of elapsed time in developmental processes, and uniform coverage of the period of embryogenesis. The stages described are at 5 % intervals with an estimated error of ± 1 %. INTRODUCTION Recently it has become possible to investigate the physiology, pharmacology, and morphology of single, identified neurons, neuroblasts and other cell types during embryogenesis in grasshoppers (Bate, 197'6 a, b; Spitzer, 1979; Goodman & Spitzer, 1979; Goodman, O'Shea, McCaman & Spitzer, 1979; Bentley & Toroian-Raymond, 1979). The paucity of preparations in which these approaches are feasible has made grasshopper embryogenesis particularly attractive for analysing many problems in developmental neurobiology and developmental biology in general. To accurately characterize the time course of developmental events, it is necessary to have a precise, rapid staging system, applicable to unstained, living material and covering the entire period of embryogenesis. -

Wickler) Abstract Aspects of premating and mating behaviour in several South American grasshopppers (Acridoidea) are described and compared. Examples of communication by acoustical, visual and chemical means are given. Acoustic signals are emitted only by species of the subfamilies Gomphocerinae, Acridinae, Romaleinae and Copiocerinae. Each subfamily has distinct sound-producing mechanisms, and the songs occur in different behavioural contexts. In Gomphocerinae and Acridinae the sexes recognize and attract each other by species-specific songs produced by a femuro-tegminal stridulatory mecha- nism. In contrast, Romaleinae produce a simple song by rubbing the hindwings against the forewings. These songs are similar in different species and no attraction of females could be demonstrated, but the behaviour may function in male-male interaction and during copulation. Sexual pheromones also play a role in this subfamily. Acoustic activity during copulation has been observed in Aleuasini (Copiocerinae), but its function is still unclear. No sound production at all exists in the Leptysminae, Rhytidochrotinae, Ommatolampinae, Melanoplinae, Proctolabinae and Bactrophorinae, but conspicuous movements of hindlegs (knee- waving) and antennae were observed. In some species these form part of a soundless courtship display. Ecological constraints have little influence on the basic mating strategies: romaleine, gom- phocerine and melanopline grasshoppers often coexist in various habitats, but show the divergent behaviour patterns characteristic of their respective subfamilies. -

O fungo entomopatogênico Metarhizium flavoviride (Gams & Rozsypal), candidato potencial ao controle de acridídeos em vários países, foi isolado de S. pallens no Nordeste do Brasil. Desde então, o patógeno tem sido estudado visando ao seu desenvolvimento como bioinseticida contra Rhammatocerus schistocercoides (Rehn), S. pallens e Stiphra robusta Mello-Leitão, que são os principais gafanhotos-praga do Brasil. Em testes realizados em condições de laboratório, aplicações tópicas de M. flavoviride (isolado CG 423), formulado em suspensão oleosa com diferentes concentrações de conídios (9.000 – 21.000 conídios/ inseto), causaram elevada mortalidade (≥ 86%) em adultos de S. pallens. Não houve mortalidade no grupo testemunha. Dentre as doses de conídios utilizadas, não houve diferença significativa quanto ao tempo médio de sobrevivência dos insetos (6,2 a 6,9 dias). WCC-2016-Rec-105-EN Cooperation between the protected areas of the Guiana Shield and northeastern Amazonia CONSIDERING that northeastern Amazonia, including the Guiana Shield (Brazil, France, Guyana, Suriname), forms one of the largest expanses of protected tropical forest in the world, almost 90% of which is intact and containing over 15% of the fresh water on Earth; CONSIDERING that this region sequesters over 4 billion tonnes of carbon; NOTING that this region contains over 30 million hectares of protected land and that 40% of the ecosystems enjoy protected status; WELCOMING the progress made since the adoption of Resolution 2.32 Nature conservation on the Guiana Shield (Amman, 2000) asking for the continuation of the implementation of conservation measures and the establishment of a coherent network of protected areas; WELCOMING the voluntary commitment to conservation made by the Guiana Shield countries through the creation of connected protected areas such as the Central Suriname Nature Reserve in 1998, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, the Tumucumaque Mountains National Park in 2002, the Guiana Amazonian Park in 2007, as well as the network of natural and forest reserves in Guiana and the South Suriname Conservation Corridor in 2015; SERIOUSLY CONCERNED by the continued practice of illegal mining activities that cause irreversible damage to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and significant pollution involving mercury in particular, which affect not only the environment but also the health and way of life of human populations; and AWARE of the importance of ensuring the sustainable, socio-economic development of local populations and their well-being; The World Conservation Congress, at its session in Hawai‘i, United States of America, 1-10 September 2016: 1. -
