WEST VALLEY LIGHT OPERA PRESENTS OUR 34th SEASON 1998-1999

Music by Lyrics by Performing at the SARATOGA CIVIC THEATER 13777 FRUITVALE AVE. in SARATOGA

JuneIJuly 1999 JOHN H. HAUSER 1916-1999 John dedicated many hours during the past 30 years to the musicals and operettas that were brought to this stage; both by West Valley Light Opera and by Saratoga Drama Group. He will be remembered most for his great comedic timing and tenor voice that entertained audiences of all ages. But John was not just a performer; he also served as Producer, constructed sets, created many unique props, provided memorable audio experiments of numerous productions for the members involved and even served a term as our Association's Treasurer. He also spent many hours, along with his late wife, Johanna, with the Junior Artist's Guild (JAG) in Palo Alto when his daughter, Susan, was performing with that group. However, John's most recent legacy is right here in this theater. About 6 years ago, when the City required the upgrading of the permanent mounting battens for hanging the lighting instruments, John was the one who obtained City approval, engi- neered and supervised the project to completion to comply to the building code. This was a man who loved Community Theater and contributed his time and talents willingly to recreate the "Broadway" feeling he loved so much. We will miss him!

MARGOT J. SULLIVAN Another staunch supporter of our organization passed away on May 20th after a very long illness. Margot was a dedicated subscriber who taught Voice and provided several of our productions with her talented students. She loved musical theater and held semi-annual recitals in her Saratoga home so that her students would have the confidence to perform for oth- ers. She founded a group that performed regularly for the Veterans, elderly and disabled, bringing them the joy of music and life. Margot was an inspi- ration to all who knew her.

2 Afew thoughts from our Director .....

Let me be the first to welcome you to "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", the final production ofWVLO's 34th season.

A brief bit of history; "Joseph ... " isAndrew Lloyd Webber's first musical and started off as a simple church choral concert back in 1969. Over the past 30 years, this show has seen numerous incarnations; from a successful conversion to a legitimate Broadway smash hit, to an expanded "road" show featuring local children's choirs, to a monstrous national tour starring Donny Osmond. My favorite version, and I think by far the best, is the Broadway version. Luckily for me, Ed Hand also likes the Broadway version, which brings all of us to this production. About eight or nine years ago in Los Angeles, I was fortunate to work with the original Broadway Joseph, Bill Hutton, along with some of the original Broadway Brothers, in a grand concert version. It is from that experi- ence that I am thrilled to bring to WVLO the closest thing to the original Broad- way production as you will ever see, with a few new added touches of my own.

What you will see and hear tonight is a testament to the commitment and heart-felt passion the wonderful WVLO creative staff gives to their produc- tions. I asked for the impossible and they have come through with flying colors. In rehearsing my light-hearted look at one of the Bible's more "colorful" charac- ters, this extraordinary cast deserves my utmost gratitude for their undying trust - pratfalls, sight gags and embarrassing moments included - the results of which shall be played out for all to see in a matter of moments. It has been a privilege to work with WVLO on "Joseph", and I look forward to participating in many more. Now, get ready to clap those hands and stomp those feet as you sit back, relax and enjoy 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. JJ

David Hock, Director/Choreographer

This "Phantom" has been viewed as one of the most appealing American musicals of recent years and should not be confused with Andrew Lloyd Webber's recent production. This bold new interpretation is a powerful, emotional story that will tug at your heart. Yeston recently wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway hit, "Titanic". This score includes: "Melodie de Paris", "You Are Music", "Home", "My True Love" and "You Are My Own". Performances: Oct/Nov/99 "THE BOY FRIEND" Book, Music & Lyrics by SANDY WILSON This classic musical is a witty and stylish cartoon of the Jazz Age in the roaring 20's, set on the French Riviera in a fashionable finishing school where the inevitable wide-eyed innocent heroine falls in love with an earnest, well-meaning young man. There are many complications which make this a delightful spoof of the old-fashioned operetta - all to a flapper beat. A good-humored, tuneful and affectionate valentine to the innocence and high spirits of the Charleston, Cloche hat and short skirt days of the 20's, this musical first opened in London in 1954, starring Julie Andrews and came to Broadway in 1970 with Sandy Duncan in the leading role. The 1972 film version starred Twiggy and Tommy Tune. Memorable songs, besides the title song, include: "Won't You Charleston With Me?" & "I Could Be Happy With You", Performances: Mar/Apr 2000 "THE FOLLIES" Book by PETER STONE, Music by CY COLEMAN, Lyrics by BETTY COMDEN & ADOLPH GREEN The spirit of Florenz Ziegfeld lives again as this musical takes you on a bewitching tour of the life and times of the legendary Will Rogers with one dazzling number after another. Rogers' rope- twirling, home-spun humor is more widely appealing amidst sensational production numbers and panache of the original "Ziegfeld Follies" which dazzled audiences during the 1920's & 1930's. This musical opened on Broadway in 1991, starring Keith Carradine and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Several national touring companies have since presented it in major cities across the country. Songs include: "Will-A-Manina", "Give Me Enough Rope", "Once In Awhile" & "Never Met a Man 1 Didn't Like". DAVID HOCK-(DirectorIChoreographer)-having re- cently relocated to SF with his wife and 4-year-old daugh- ter, David is very excited to be working with WVLO for the first time, continuing a wonderful welcome from the Bay Area theatrical community which has included direc- torial work for USF with "City of Angels" and for CCCT with a bedroom farce, "The Amorous Ambassador". David, through his own production company, Golden Cove En- tertainment, has been a producer, director and choreographer, on both coasts for more than 15 years. His credits include productions of "Company", "Man of La Mancha", concert version of "Joseph ... Dreamcoat" with the original Broadway Joseph (BillHutton), "Gypsy", "Annie", "Guys & Dolls", "South Pacific", "My Fair Lady", "The Fantastiks", "The Pajama Game", "Bye, Bye, Birdie" and many others. David also produced and co-directed an original musical touring show, "Musical Feat", with Tony-Award win- ning director Thommie Walsh and has founded two different civic theater companies, VCLO in the San Fernando Valley and LVMTS in Las Vegas. David is also involved in the Film/TV world where he is currently develop- ing a variety of projects. David would like to thank his wife and daughter for "sharing" Daddy the past couple of months with the wonderful cast and crew of "Joseph ... " And we want to express our thanks as well for all the time and effort you have expended on this production.

DAVID B. HERBERG-(Music Director)-This marks David's third production with WVLO as Music Director, his last baton-yielding was done for his favorite show, "Crazy For You" for which he also was the Choral Direc- tor and "South Pacific". Even though he was not direct- ing, David has been a regular member of most of our or- chestras. David's long list of impressive credits includes "The King & I", "Fiddler On The Roof", "Music Man" and "42ndStreet" at SCp, "Oklahoma!" and "Secret Garden" for MVP; but he is most famous for his annual Spring Sing of Handel's Messiah for which he conducts both orchestra and audience. He earned his BS & MS from Stanford University and is an Engineering Manager at Compaq. David loves sailing and spelunking and would love to work in professional theater. Welcome back, David! 16 CHRISTINE NIELSEN-(Vocal Director)-We are de- lighted to have Christine join us for this production, her first with WVLO. With a BS from BYU in music, dance and business, she is well qualified for her position of pia- nist and choir director for the Campbell Union HS Dis- trict. She has been Music Director for PYT,Westmont HS, Rolling Hills Middle School and WVc. Christine has also been an orchestra member for theater groups throughout the Bay Area. Her hobbies are her kids, music and crafts, not necessarily in that order!! Welcome to our staff, Christine, and we hope you will join us for another production next season.

LIORA DANINE-(Co-Choreographer)-Having gradu- ated from WGHS in San Jose, Liora is thrilled to be back up in the Bay Area, especially with her first choreography work being performed so close to where she spent her "for- midable" years. Liora has enjoyed working side-by-side with Director, David Hock, for about ten years. She has col- laborated with David on such shows as "Company", Man of La Mancha", "Joseph" and "Annie". As a consummate triple threat, Liora has been working professionally for more than 15 years. Some of her favorite credits include ''A Funny Thing ... Forum" in Atlantic City, NJ with Nipsey Russell; Amy in "Company"; Tiger Lily in "Peter Pan", Angel in "Best Little Whorehouse ... "; appearing in numerous episodes of "Golden Girls" and working in Mel Brooks' "Robin Hood: Men In Tights". Liora is a certified personal trainer and Pilates instructor in SF and her proud- est collaboration with David is their four-year-old daughter, Devra Grace. We hope you enjoyed this experience and will want to repeat it again soon. Thanks for sharing your talents with us, Liora.

STEPHEN C. WATHEN-(Production Designer)-Once again Stephen has used his extraordinary talents to give our production a unique setting to take us back to the days of Canaan & Egypt. We have lost count of all the many beautiful, realistic scenic drops and innovative sets he has designed for our stage, but "They're Playing Our Song" was his most recent. Others in- clude "Crazy For You", "Nunsense II", "Gypsy", "Meet Me In St. Louis", "Merry Widow", "Oklahoma!', "Kismet", and "Irene", just to name a few. Several other theatrical groups have been the recipient of his talents as well, but his favorites are "Dracula" and his own original play, "Night Of The

17 Demons". Stephen's most recent film credits were on the Gumby movie, but he was also involved in designing and building sets and special effects for "Plant of Dinosaurs", "Birdy" & "Dernonhunter". Stephen loves to hear comments on his sets, so when you see him in the lobby, tell him how great they are!

AMY ROUSSELOT-(Costumer)-Amy is also new to our staff and has a long list of credits, both in Costume and Commercial Clothing Design. She earned her BA at UCLA, a Fashion Design Certificate from OCC and at- tended Academy of Art College. She has costumed "Plaza Suite" and "City of Angels" for USF Gill Theatre; "The Amorous Ambassador" for CCCT, and served as the Costume Shop Assistant for the UCLA Dance Depart- ment. In the field of commercial clothing design, she was the Technical Designer for Gymboree; the Fashion Show Coordinator for various shows in the Bay Area for Sharon Hagerty; Assistant Designer for Couloir USA, organizing the design process of skiwear to facilitate overseas manufacturing and prepared 9 sportswear lines for domestic and overseas manufacturing for Quiksilver. We are very pleased and grateful that Amy has taken the time to costume this production.

MICHAEL G. MUNOZ-(Lighting Designer)-Mike just completed "They're Playing Our Song" and began planning this production. His spe- ciallighting effects have also enhanced "Crazy For You", ''Annie Get Your Gun", "Nunsense II", "Camelot" and "Me & My Girl". Mike has also de- signed lighting for SDG's productions of "Sugar", "Irene", "High Button Shoes" and "Brigadoon" in this theater and most recently completed the lighting design for "Barefoot In The Park" for SCPL. He would like to dedi- cate this program to his mother.

CORINNE PERMAUL-(Stage Manager)-This will be Corinne's third production as stage manager, she made her debut in "South Pacific" and then added "Crazy For You" to her accomplishments. She also helped in other backstage duties with the stage crew and props this season in "Carou- sel" and "They're Playing Our Song". Thanks for giving this crew the ben- efit of your organizational skills and warm personality . • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Grateful Acknowledgements Argonaut School, Saratoga Drama Group, Michelle Morgan, Kris Dudley, The Theatre Company of Upland, CA, 18 West Valley Light Opera Awards The following awards, chosen by the Staff, are presented to a member of each production who has made an outstanding contribution to the success of that production in the following areas.
